a 5f joint is a tube or pipe to plate where the plate is vertical and the pipe axis is running horizontal.
in this video, I used an upside down V technique to trace the leading edge of the weld puddle .
I also used the auto settings for 1/8" but trimmed the wire speed back to try to prevent a humped up convex weld.

Sometimes when I watch your welding I just want to just give up. This is a prime example. I would have thought filling those gaps in one pass was impossible. Welding that pipe joint in two passes and having it look like it was welded by a robot just leaves me dumb struck. Still the best welding vids on RU-vid. Please keep them coming.

When I was an apprentice welder back in the 70's the company I worked for had wanted to get me working with the MIG process and had a BOC (British oxygen Company) come and show me how to use the process and show how advantageous it could be to the company and the down hill open square edge butt weld was the first weld I did and it amazed me how after completing a few test runs that you could not tell from what side I had actually welded from it had me looking in astonishment and so much the demonstrator had said once I finished my apprenticeship i should apply for a job with him as he put it I had the knack. I did but he had left only one day to be reunited with him as he was a technical director of a welding supplies company and i was employed to go to companies where they were having weld issues and for me to go with boiler suit in hand and address the issues. Satisfaction of helping fellow welders get over problems was almost worth more than the salary, not really but close. With regards to the fillet pass on the tube and flange I would of single stringer bead a root pass and cap with a weave, just my own opinion

Props to the camera guy. Editing (cutting between feeds back and forth) was top notch. I like most of the other welding channels on youtube, but yours is the go-to. :) Down-hand can make very sound welds. Down-hand is the technique of choice in equipment/ repair and commercial welding applications. Down-hand is nice when it comes to dealing with copious gap. We don't always have the option of flipping stuff around or busting the fit and re-cutting new steel/metal. I like FCAW too. GMAW is nice. I tried copying like you do when it comes to tracing the puddle's profile. It helps me crank the Volts up and still have proper crowning. Thank you for another good video !

Happy with my mp220 just need to learn an Amps to Volts conversion eg 1/8 = .125"=125A start point =??.?V .. I use stickout adjustments to change heat. On this weld I'd run the auto setting with V. toped out or 1 notch below, to satisfy the 3/16 standard stickout on pipe side and add 1/8-3/16" stickout on thinner plates ection of the v motion. Longer =colder shorter =hotter (more wire =larger resistor in circuit=fewer amps at the arc) Nice work as always I learn something new from you.

Tell your Son-in-Law to wear clear safety glasses to protect his eyes from the UV rays coming off the weld arc. I also recommend that everyone wear UV protection under their helmet. It's a cheap fix for a big problem. Corrective glasses, like Jody wears, will also protect you. You don't want to have to get Cataract surgery in both eyes, like I had to.
@JanFlycaster
@JanFlycaster 5 лет назад
But a proper welding mask should filter out UV. Otherwise there would hardly be any sense in using one, you could also just wear sunglasses with dark shade.
@funnlivinit
@funnlivinit 5 лет назад
@@JanFlycaster There are a several reasons to wear eye protection under your hood. True ALL welding masks and hoods filter out UV. However, I recommend that people wear safety glasses under their hood to protect their eyes when their hood is not down. Like when you are getting ready to strike an arc and accidentally arc while flipping your hood down. Safety glasses will protect your eyes from dingo balls bouncing around inside your helmet while you are welding. Also it will protect you from arc flash from nearby welders. You can get flashed while your hood is up, obviously. And while your hood is down from a welder behind you. The UV can reflect off the glass on the inside of your helmet and give you a sore eye the next day. How do I know this? Because it's happened to me in a tight space with several welders working at once.
@JanFlycaster
@JanFlycaster 5 лет назад
@@funnlivinit reflection from other welders is a problem, yes. But I just wanted to point out, that, if you are a DIY welder and do not weld all day with multiple people working around/with you, eye protection under your helmet is not really mandatory. A little additional security does not hurt, but people do not need to get scared for no reason. Also, many people are welding with automatic helmets in which case you light the arc while the hood is done already.
@dustinopper9845
@dustinopper9845 5 лет назад
Josh Huß still doesn’t matter if you weld every once in a while or all the time. Always wear safety glasses underneath the helmet. There’s been multiple times where I’ve been welding and sparks would somehow manage to get underneath my lid and bounce off my glasses. It only takes one time for you to have a bad day lol always protect your eyes
@JanFlycaster
@JanFlycaster 5 лет назад
@@dustinopper9845 I am welding TIG, no sparks there. We were primarily talking about UV protection up until now.

Sometimes I use a tack stack method. Set it hot, almost twice as hot. Start tacking, let each tack cover half of the last tack. Watch the glow start to fade before progressing but never allow the last tack to completely loose its orange color before tacking again.
