From what I can dig up this was part of Johnny Cash's 1977 Christmas Special. Johnny was 45 years old, Carl Perkins was also 45, Jerry Lee Lewis was 42, and Roy Orbison was 41. 44 years later only Jerry Lee is still with us. But what a legacy they've all left.
@@next3576 it was Christmas 1977 , they dedicated it to Elvis who passed away August of that year . As far as looking 60 , these guys lived hard lives with booze and pills . I think a few also lived in poverty as youth working the cotton fields etc …
The song was written 99 years ago, and popularized 83 years ago by the Rock'N'Roll Hall of Famer Sister Rosetta Tharpe (Johnny Cash's favorite singer). The Sun Records Three have well-known Gospel roots, and Orbison was certainly a "spiritual" singer. All four men (as did Elvis) do themselves proud in their visits to Gospel.
@@rhuephus Elvis is original part of the million dollar Quartett. All these guys raised up at sam Phillips' sun studio. And Johnny said at the beginning:... For Elvis...
Can you imagine what this concert would be like? Just to see these men on one stage would be enough to blow your mind, and to hear them sing would be by pure heaven.
I saw all but Roy Orbison live on stage. Carl Perkins was with the Johnny Cash show which toured with the Carter Family. Jerry Lee played Great Balls of Fire at least 5 times and they had to drop the curtain to end the show which went 2 hours over! Great memories.
I liked J Cash until I read about how he and June Carter destroyed John's first marriage and with several small children involved. I never saw him in the same way afterwards. The music was fine but I never felt any respect for him after.
They are all gone now. May they all Rest In Peace. I played this over the sound system, on a steam train excursion last night. (It was a private trip) You could have heard a pin drop when it was over. Fortunately I didn’t get yelled at! Lol
Well... yes & no.... there was another group, which included one of these icons, Roy Orbison RIP, called "The Travelling Wilbury's" that were every bit as good and legends themselves.......Roy Orbison RIP...Tom Petty RIP... George Harrison RIP... Jeff Lynne.... Bon Dylan..........they released 2 albums and some truly great music too.
You know I’m in my mid sixties and I’ve heard some great music. Swing and jazz that pre dates my birth. I’ve heard rock and roll and rock and soul , Latin rap and you name it. I listen to the beetles , The Rolling Stones , Frank Sinatra and Dean , Elton John , Aretha and so many others but let me tell you there is something special about folks like Johnny Cash and other country stars. Very simple and honest sincere music that speaks to the heart of America. We are fortunate to have had them in our lives.
Very well put. I totally agree. Cash showed his soul something many so called entertainers are reluctant to do. It has to do with his humbleness I think.
Hey Donar , you young whipper snapper thanks for the spelling correction. Your never to old to learn. I’m glad that I gave you the opportunity to feel superior to me even if it was at my own expense. It must be nice to believe you are the smartest person in the room. Best to you.
@@nelsona.7950 That would be "you're" and "too" Mr Nelson A. I never imagined I was the smartest person in the room?? Edit: Best to you _too_ sir. Take care during this coronavirus craziness.
The name Million Dollar Quartet was actually an impromptu jam session with Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley and it happened on December 4th 1956, the day I was born!!!
Never knew much about Carl Perkins other than vague knowledge of his rockabilly roots. But I watched an interview with him the other day, and wow! He was so very kind, very humble, didn't have a bad word to say about anyone or blame for how things went early in his career after his car wreck. No pity, just gratitude and compliments for others. Plus, stayed married to his wife the whole time instead of swapping around like a lot of stars. I'm a fan now! He was the real deal!
@@custerranch Blue Suede Shoes. Though I don't think he wrote it FOR Elvis but the King recorded and immortalised it. Carl's own version is brilliant but much different to Elvis's.
@@davidgibbs7232 Perkins had a hit with Blue Suede Shoes before Elvis recorded it, so he did not write it for Elvis. If I remember correctly, Elvis recorded it while Perkins was recovering from his car wreck.
There are some things that NEED to take place and leave an indelible imprint on your heart, mind and spirit. This Quartet of these bona-fide LEGENDS Singing this Gospel classic Glorifying the TRUE LIVING GOD JEHOVAH, is THAT event that needed to happen 🙏. I don't know why but this is the first time I've ever seen this. By the end of the weekend it will no doubt be nearer 100times than 1 lol Love it ,thanks for upload
@@patrickmorgan4006 lol I know. It's just annoying af so I've got to mess with them... if I see another "could of" or "irregardless" I'm going to vomit.
You can hear the conviction of and solid belief of the words that each man sang in spite of the challenges some of them endured in their chosen profession.
the most amazing part of this is how jerry lee lewis never sings a song the same way twice, and yet each and every time i've heard him sing live, it's as if he's sung it that particular way forever. absolute confidence in himself. he just understands music better than us, i guess. for him, it's like having a conversation, no need for us to practice what we're about to say as we speak, no, we just speak naturally and with no deliberation. that's how well he gets music/songs, he's not thinking about it at all, he just sings and the phrasing is always perfect.
