Hey Pete just letting you know I'm one of the only people in Connecticut that uses pine straw in all my beds and we actually sell it up here and also wanted to say that I'm a lawn care technician for many years and have learned a lot from your videos and you are a very inspirational person and I will continue watching as much as you can dish out!

I just can not resist the opportunity to comment. As I understood it some 63 years ago, Milorganite is the waste generated by the City of Milwaukee. It is sterilized of course and the nutrients listed are normalized to a minimum. I dug and planted about 100' of privet hedge in heavy clay soil which is actually great due to the mineral content. We amended the soil with peat moss and Milorganite. Measure? No. Just do it. Move forward 59 years and I bought my retirement home. The neighborhood ranges in age from one to ninety +. Lots of laughter and kids yelling. We are built on the side of an old rock quarry. Any top soil intended for the yard fell off the truck on the way here. But we have a lot of gravel and rock. So when I planted my Rhododendrons, I took my little Mantis tiller and went to work working the soil and removing rock. Then peat moss, Sweet Peat, bagged top soil and Milorganite and sulfur (soil tested). The Rhododendron are beautiful. The rose beds and perennial beds are also gorgeous. I also use Holly-tone (Espoma corp.) because my soil is so alkaline and Osmocote (slow release from Scotts). Sure beats burning leaves, compost, pigeon poop and lime I used as a kid!

Looking at the color differences. I think the density of the grass is hiding the clay soil. Would like to see one blade of grass next to the other. You do us all a great service in our yards and with Gods word. People need to remember to respect you and your family’s privacy!!! God bless you & yours!

debbie duncan-sargent you will not see a difference in the grass blade thickness. That’s the same. What I mean by “thicker” is the overall density of the turf

I'm in southeast Indiana. 36 miles north of Louisville Kentucky right there on 65. First 2 weeks of April it rained for 2 weeks non-stop. Flooded everything. Cornfields looked like muddy oceans. Hasn't rained any significant amount since. I reckon we've got MAYBE 1.5" in almost two months. I had to break down and buy an above ground sprinkler system because I was getting the same thing in my yard. Stressed out to the max. We've been in the mid to high 80's since about the second week of spring. It's a mess.

You stated in the comments that academy feeds for 4-6 months. I would be very interested to see that proven through testing. It has been my experience that most ferts feed for 1/2 the time the manufacturer says. Cheers brother.

the more deficient your soil is the faster it gets used up. also the more it can get into the ground and deeper into the root layers of the ground the longer it stays there instead of being washed away by excess moisture run off(rain/snowmelt). in an ideal world in a blackdirt-sand-compost mix soil 4" over a decent clay layer 4 months is about right in minnesota. in arizona 6 months would be right. major difference in climate, grass type and precipitation. never used academy, just basing my observations of what i have used over the years professionally i don't see the pellets dissolve fully until 3-6 months. most of the fert is the expensive stuff in fert is powder stuck to the surface of those pellets while the cheaper stuff is the entire composition of the pellet. i call it all pellet because it's easier even tho some of it is just dust and other is chipped up rock/salt/ peanut brittle composites (for lack of a better term combinations liquid solution turned slow release pelletized solid for time releasing like rock candy or peanut brittle is manufactured)

I believe another reason Phosphorus is being used less is because it gets in to runoff and creates algae blooms where they are not wanted!!!! What do you think GCI???

Pete, technical question here. I graduated 40 years ago with an agronomy degree and have been plugged into crops and soils ever since. I am still a student and really like your lawn care tips. You are a true delight to listen to. One thing I have a question on in this video regards the soil pH. You were quoting 4.4 and 4.8 pH soil test levels. YIKES! I was brought up with soil pH readings more in the 6-6.5 test area. Now I sure can’t argue with your results but wouldn’t you get more fertilizer efficiency if you brought those levels up? Lime is relatively a cheap expense granted it would a massive amount on what looks like some large lawns. I just believe in lime and how well it benefits the soil organic complex. I imagine the high sulfur levels are helping to contribute to the acidity.
@GCITurf
@GCITurf 6 лет назад
Don Cline you are exactly right. 6.5 is what I shoot for. My “yard” is 6.4 as I check that twice a year and adjust to keep it at that. What you are looking at is the test plot. I’m testing 2 different fertilizers to see how the nutrients fluctuate after the application. If I were to lime the test plot then it would release more nutrients and give me false readings on my nutrients on the soil test. Does that make sense?

I put morganite down last year in the spring, its showing me its results this year in the spring, my grass greend up faster then anyone elses in face it was mostly green all winter even with snow on it and frozen. I tried not to walk in the grass but with 2 dogs I kinda had to. I added lime 3 years ago the lower the ph becuse I seen a lot of weeds becuse for 18 years I didnt do anything to my lawn. Here's the deal a premium fertilizer cost 40 to 60 bucks a 50lb bag, it lasts a few months then it's gone. Morganite cost me 8 bucks a 50lb bag no name brand and it dosnt break down, also you cant put down too much. Do that with a professional fertilizer and you will burn and kill the grass. For the money and easy use morganite is a much better deal, however I'd still add a professional fertilizer with it anyway just not as often. Now this is KCMO its march 26 and I have to mow my grass to even it out somewhat too many tall and low spots from grass seed I put down last spring that finely came up. I dont water my lawn cost too much. I use Grasspad products it's a local supplier. You can search Grasspad on google to get an idea of what we use here. I've never heard of the products your using it must be for your area. Your soil and my soil are no where close to the same this is true of every part of the nation. I would like to have your digital testers i have never sent my soil out for a test. And I dont think national brands products work everywhere. The Grasspad is a local company it's a chain store started here the history of it online if you want to know more but it was a sod farmer.

Interesting discussion. I wouldn’t expect much of a soil chemistry change from a treatment of fertilizer. I have used both synthetic and organic fertilizers on my lawn and both work. I like how the organic fertilizers seem to come on more slowly and last longer. What’s a soil pH of 4.8 you should be growing blueberries not turf.

@raadkins16 6 лет назад
Scott Godwin How do you determine how much like to put down if you don’t do soil testing ?
@paulscott6998
@paulscott6998 6 лет назад
Robert Adkins With Milorganite you don’t need to worry about how much to put down. Just put down a bag for every 2500 square feet and do it 3 or four times during the growing season. I put mine down in february and april mixed with preemergent and again in june and september by itself. I do spray for occasional weeds and also spray fungicides during the summer months every 25 days. Just started tank spraying humic acid and aerate to help with soil compaction, but I mix it all up with my herbicides and fungicides to keep the tank spraying to a minimum.
@raadkins16
@raadkins16 6 лет назад
Scott Godwin I should have clarified. How do you determine how much lime to put down if you don’t soil test? I see the Milo schedule and that makes sense. But I didn’t assume it would help make sure the pH is where it needs to be and I need to check to see if lime is needed ?
@paulscott6998
@paulscott6998 5 лет назад
Robert Adkins If you don’t want to do a soil test, just use either Milorganite or an organic fertilizer. Spray the soil with humic acid or apply the granular humic acid. You will be getting your ph right over time without adding all that lime. If you must check your ph, get a ph soil probe online. I’ve been using Milo and organic fertilizer because it does better in getting your dirt right. I have used Milo for three years now and my soil test came back saying they did not recommend any fertilizer or micronutrients. I have been putting down humic acid dry for a couple years and just this summer started spraying the humic acid to go farther and less expensive.
@paulscott6998
@paulscott6998 5 лет назад
Robert Adkins I’ve only done one soil test, but the proof is really in how healthy your turf and soil are. If your top layer of soil is dark and your grass is dark green and dense you really don’t need a soil test do you? If I am healthy and my hair, nails and skin look great, why would I need to do an mri and look at all my organs? I give everything the eyeball test and if it looks great the proof is in the pudding!!

I use Milo because it's cheap and readily available. I just bought 10 bags at Farm&Fleet on sale for $6.99 a bag. Ten bags last me half the summer.
@nicoandalysa
@nicoandalysa 6 лет назад
John Salazar Milorganite is far from cheap. Even at $7 a bag it cost 4 times what a good urea or ammonium based fertilizer cost for 1 pound of nitrogen per 1,000 sqft. I can fertilize my entire 20,000 sqft yard for $15 per application, at $7 per bag of Milo it would cost $65. And I’ve never been able to find Milo for less than $13 a bag in my area which would cost $150 vs the $15 per app.

@thebigdoghimself
@thebigdoghimself 6 лет назад
You can't compare a natural fertilizer to a synthetic one. I also buy a couple bags of regular fertilizer every year and yes you are right it's dirt cheap. You've got a 20k sf lot mine is a quarter of that.
@thebigdoghimself
@thebigdoghimself 6 лет назад
Yeah, Blain's Farm and Fleet has great sales. Even their regular price isn't bad. Right now F&F is at $8.99 and Menard's is also at $8.99. Home Depot is at $10.99. You might want to check to see if Safer Brand Ringer Lawn Restore is available in your area. If you find it for about $25 it's a good deal and is applied at a much lower Lbs per Sf than Milorganite.
@nicoandalysa
@nicoandalysa 6 лет назад
John Salazar you said it was cheap there for I am comparing cost between the two to prove that it is in fact not cheap. And I wouldn’t call it a “natural fertilizer”, it is human waste that has been processed to become fertilizer. There is a reason they had to take “organic” off label.

I hate to be that guy, but I'm in the north I'm not sure it applies to me anyway but your goal is to sell turf academy subscriptions. I've done everything from pay local fertilizer companies to Scott's 4 step to what i do now which is cheapest menards weed and feed I can pick up and milo at the specified rate 3x a year. I cut my kbg 3.5" and give it frequent watering each day for 1.0-1.25" a week. It seems to work the best for me, MSU agrees on the frequent watering lately as I've found myself. I dunno everybody is selling something, really takes first hand experience. I dont know what to think either milo is expensive feces or effective but it seems to work for me, mostly because the other parts of the turf care equation are in place.

On paper it looks like the milo and academy fert is pretty much the same. But the eye test suggests otherwise, I need to get my hands on the academy fert! It's been really hot and dry here in NE Oklahoma as well. We will hit 100 degrees middle of next week. Very unusual for this area. We usually are sitting on the front porch drinking cold beer and watching tornadoes this time of year. Spring took this year off I guess. Hopefully that means fall will come early! Oh I'm coming by your house big boy, I've just got to see the difference for myself, and maybe I'll do a couple doughnuts in your yard and then a burn out just to see if you can catch me. Lol. Ok, I'm just joking, I couldn't resist a little fun after your" you stay in your yard " comment. That was too funny.

Hey Pete! So what’s your go to for fungus down there? I am guessing with the heat and humidity you have to get some disease... Does GCI offer a specific fungicide? Every year I get red thread followed by dollar spot and then always brown patch. I tend to think I do all the text book practices but it still comes. 🤷🏻‍♂️

What is the price per 1,000 difference between the Milo and Academy? Thanks 👍🏻
@GCITurf
@GCITurf 6 лет назад
Great Question... I have wondered why no one has asked this yet LOL Based off what I pay per bag locally for Milo is $13. One bag covers 2,500 squ ft. Milo cost per 1000 = $5.20 Academy Summer fert is $30/bag and covers 4,356 squ ft. cost per 1000 = $6.88 Where the money difference is Academy summer fert feeds for 4-6 months. Milo only feeds 30-45 days....to my knowledge. So, you would have to do 3-4 applications of milo to get the same length of feed. $5.20 x 3 applications = $15.60. The academy fert has to be shipped which cost $20-$30 a bag depending on where you live. This is the only drawback. Hope this helps

@@GCITurf we pay $7 a bag for Milo in MN but assuming that has to be due to our closeness to the plant

Love your lawn tests, keep up the good work. 3:21- I see a lot of brown blade tips. Dull blade? Are you mowing that 3" test plot with a different mower and blade? Also, you didn't stress that 3" lawn by going from 4" down to 3" in one cut, by chance? Guessing not. Last, curious to see if the soil test results are much different comparing your fert mix to milo. If they are, you should compare the ingredients to try to attribute what's driving the variation.
