As a first time home owner in his first lawn season: your channel has been a blessing to my once neglected yard. Most of the recent FL stuff is good, but your content from IN is excellent for my Midwest yard. Thank you for teaching us rookies!
I've been using Milorganite for the past year and a half and have been very pleased. However, 2 weeks ago I decided to double down and thrown down a half app of ringer along with half milorganite in the front yard and just a full app of Ringer in the back. HOLY COW! My front yard has taken off!
Also was wondering if you use milorganite only, do you use a supplemental potassium? And if you use only ringer, do you have something to help with phosphate since it helps with root growth?
Thank you for this. I wasn't sure how much malorganite to "throw down" so I threw the whole bag down in the front and the back. My winter rye is taking off like mad!
Thank you for telling us about Milograntie, I used to be an avid Scott's brand user, but after watching your videos it's the only thing I use on our half acre yard. I also just got a bag on clearance at Walmart for 3.00... That's a steal...
Just got my 2 bags of ringer today gonna put it on Tuesday early a.m and dominate the neighborhood. I used Jonathan green up last year and just wanna try ringer never used before thanks for this informative video.
I think what most homeowners should know is its perfectly fine to put both down at the same time and enjoy the benefits of both. I personally think Lawn Restore is a better product as a stand alone for lawns in bad shape but using both together will give you the best results with no adverse affects.
Love your channel just subscribed I'm a lawn nut and love doing yard work just moved into a house where the yard is a mess but it's a work in progress!
Just like you mentioned on some of your other videos I've used Milorganite this spring and it certainly has given it a deep green appearance. Just bought a toro lawn striping kit. Following your northern lawn tips and advice has made my yard look the best in the neighborhood this spring. Thank you!
Thanks for the Comparison . I was searching for this just a week before. Also, If you can do something on humic acid application, that would be awesome.
Wow. Here in WI I am getting Milorganite for just under $7 a bag. Sometimes on sale it's under 6. Probably because it's also made here. I guess it's a no brainer what I am going to use.
I've been using Milorganite since watching your videos and love it. I love the smell of feces in the morning! :) Any tips on how often to apply it? And does over-applying make it so you have to mow more often?
Apply Milorganite 4 times per year. Accelerated growth can be a symptom of over applying. Remember to mow high and often, taking off no more than 1/3 of the height at a time.
So I've started doing what Tru Green used to do this year. Unfortunately, I stumbled across your channel well after the first Spring applications. I put down groundworks starter. Then I did Scott's weed and feed and grubex throughout the spring. Needless to say I have weeds and an assortment of clovers running about. The color is nice and green so the yard isn't a disaster by any means. Can I switch to either of these products for the next treatment this summer?
I put down an application of Scotts Max Green Memorial Day weekend, but wasn't very happy with the results. Got a nice quick green up thanks to the iron, but the color was uneven and it really dried out my lawn despite giving it plenty of water. On June 15th, I put down a full application of Ringer Lawn restore and after 5-7 days my lawn's color is evening out, it has thickened up quite a bit and the overall health of the lawn is noticeably better. Not only that, it smells like beer which is a bonus. I'm sold and plan to stick to the organic ferts going forward.
Alright, I've been following you for a few months, and following your awesome instructions. What's with the tiger call??? Did I miss something? It's both hilarious, and muy macho brotatochip!
it's from a video a few months ago, I said "sometimes I get all Cowboy and 'throw er' down' " talking about grass seed - but now I say "thrower down" about everything, mostly fert!
Seems like Ringer's problem is distribution. If you look on Amazon with "free shipping" Milorganite is still $27.37. If Ringer was available in local stores, I would guess it's price could be much closer to Milorganite. Of course, for your comparison it is fair to compare the actual prices you can acquire the product.
Allyn, I'm trying to fine tune my annual fertilizer apps. How does this sound to you? St. Patrick's Day = Ringer Memorial Day = Ringer Labor Day = Milorganite
Or, because 5 is half of 10, you could just determine the cost of two bags of Milo vs. one bag of ringer and get a rough price difference comparison. Simpler math and about as effective considering you're rounding a lot of your numbers in your analysis anyway.
I've been using milorganite for years. I don't think I've paid more then $8/bag for it. Goes on sale for $6/bag. Great stuff cause if you do over use your not going to kill your lawn.
Is this a consideration? Since you are applying twice as much milorganite per 1000 sq. ft., and, 85% of the bag is organic filler (compost?), you are getting twice as much organics into the soil as top dressing with Milorganite. Is that a valid consideration, or, is it a negligable difference?
that must mean it is 6.99 every where else, and Menards is planning on giving you a .50 mail in rebate that you have to wait 6 weeks for. Fuck off John Menard!
Allyn, How would I be able to contact you? I have a series of questions for you, regarding my lawn. I recently purchased a home & need your expertise? Thanks.
This may sound stupid. I bought ringer and milorganite (used whole bags) and my grass is now dead. 200sq feet. I guess I still had to follow the instructions =(
I made the mistake of using Scott's Weed and Feed and then waiting about 6 weeks and applying Scott's new lawn fertilizer. I want to make the switch to Organics and specifically Milorganite. Since I just applied the Scott's fertilizer a week ago, how long should I wait before hitting my lawn with the first dose of Milorganite?
Hey Allyn. what are your thoughts on mixing ringer and milorganite for a single application? would seem like a perfect match. im experimenting with it now to see the results I get. Seems to me its the best of both worlds
I would not physically mix the two and apply - that wouldn't work--- however, to do a half rate spread of Milo, then separately a half rate spread of Ringer would be just fine.
Lawn Care Nut, question for you, I am in the Nashville TN area, I am about to put my first application of Milogranite this week, 6 July 2017, is this a good thing to do or should I wait till the fall for a first application, thoughts
Not trying to start an argument. With Milorganite are you concerned about "the other stuff" that is put into Lake Michigan? Milorganite is more than just dried microbes, it also includes whatever else was in the water that they couldn't consume. We have a well and the wife is concerned about leeching. I'd like to use the stuff personally...
From i have read milo treat your soil creating microrganism that will eventually create nitrogen ,so the actual amount of nitrogen at first spreading of 5% is not that important as sinthetic fertilizer, thats what i understand under my poor english
What kind of line are you using in your trimmer? I have an Echo PAS-225 as well and I'm wondering what line I'm going to load it up with once I run out of the Echo brand line.
Shouldn't be comparing the pricing of these 2, as if they're apples to apples. Each will give your lawn a wonderful boost, but in different ways. Rotate them throughout the season and you'll have the best yard in town.
ah dang I see it now -- good news I have NOT uploaded part2 yet so I can make the correction there!!!! thanks guys, appreciate you getting on this quick for me :)
HA! I thought I was the only one who caught that. Being a female on this male dominated channel I just held my tongue! Lol... So he made an oops! Thanks LCN...with all your great tips my lawn is right up there with the big boys in my neighborhood!
Could you verify if I have this correct? Goal = 0.75 pounds of Nitrogen per 1000 square feet Example: Scotts turf builder fall lawn food, 13 pound bag (32-0-10) Math = 0.75(goal of nitrogen per 1000 square feet) divided by 32 (amount of nitrogen in fertilizer bag) = 0.0234375 multiplied by 100 to get the actual pounds of fertilizer to apply per 1000 square feet = 2.3 pounds of fertilizer per 1000 square feet • Take your 2.3 pounds already calculated and multiply it by the square footage of your lawn Math: 2.3(pounds of fertilizer) x 2.5 (devide square footage of lawn, (example 2500) by 100 to get proper number for the calculation) = 5.75 pounds of fertilizer Conclusion: 5.75 pounds of fertilizer applied to my 2500 square foot lawn to achieve the goal of 0.75 pounds of nitrogen per 1000 square feet.
Milorganite IS NOT an organic fertilizer, and the bag does not claim that it’s organic. Milorganite is “organic nitrogen”. If you don’t mind using processed municipal sewage sludge on your lawn by all means use Millrganite, but I’d you want an ORGANIC fertilizer use Ringers Lawn Restore.
LOL.. So you need 2 bags of Milo or 1 bag of Ringer. $24 for the Milo and Best/Doit Hardware is cheapest for Ringer $29.99 (amazon is more pricey). Since both are organic but chemically different. Beyond the Macros wonder what the diff is in the micros.. As this is where people could mix or match product to meet their micro nutrient needs. You can get Nitrogen only fert so if you are using organic then your really focusing on the micro nutrients. If your doing soil test knowing whats in the bags may drive your decision on which you need to use. If you are using organic I dont think product cost is that critical to those who are using it.. I said in other places wish he would do a vid on this. Dont have to be a throw-r-down vid. As if you put down a product heavy it will just give more nitrogen which regardless of product will get results. But how to fine tune products to solve weakness in micronutrients.
