Agree with great Millstein in totality. Use violin to try out musical combination of notes which sound good. I am not expert violinist I can play violin now past 83 years age . Practicing on the Violin combination of notes and improvising are communication with my inner voice. It is my way of doing meditation. Do it whenever my mind feels like it, early morning after waking up from bed few minutes, later in the day few minutes and before going to sleep in the night few minutes communication with the Violin. It is for me the most enjoyable calming experience considering I live all alone for over 20 years. I am never alone my violin is my companion.

@@M_SCI agree the word “meditation” feels right to explain the state we get into whilst playing. But meditation means the absence of thought. It’s just a feeling we feel into that state of mind. It’s hard to stay present during every second of it, but that’s what gets us results…

I accidentally stumbled onto Millstein, after seeing his effortless/beautiful violin playing and now I have found this clip… (My instrument is the guitar). Nathan’s advice I will follow.

The best. By this I mean, when I hear him, I feel I am really hearing the instrument, and at least a good portion of the composer. He HAS personality, but I am not JUST hearing his personality.

Interesting. It’s always, obviously, from the standpoint of the person saying it. But „difficulty“ opposing progress isn’t in itself a fact I would say. But I get his point. As Perlman said „You also need to freely „play around/ experiment“ meaning not being too strict.

Milstein's technique was the most compact and efficient I have ever seen. He achieved a level of ease where his artistic invention could express itself without physical limitations. Whenever I feel stuck I go to his videos for inspiration.

Nathan was a fabulous violinist but that won't help students a great deal. Artists are not always good pedagogues and quite often they are unable to explain what has to be mastered to achieve a specific result. A good teacher should be able to explain in detail everything a pupil has to know or be aware of in order to be successful. Many artists were very good performers but at the same time very bad at teaching,

Sadly you're right. Furthermore, politicians from several countries (for example, Spain, my native country) are awarding, as stable employers as violin teachers, to excellent young violinists who are not interested in improving as pedagogues or simply have no qualities for violin teaching. It's certainly too much disappointing!!
