This was a really useful and informative video. I just bought this roller cabinet and tool chest from the home depot. I already own several tool boxes but I find they tend to fill up fast. So I ordered this one for future capacity. I know I will use it because I am always buying and acquiring tools. After seeing your video I am convinced I made the right decision. Thanks for taking the time to post it online.
Great review! Love the info for the lock swap! I totally agree with the "built-in work surface" AND.... I'd like to mention, it looks like (if one would prefer) the drill and battery organizer can be removed, then hung/mounted on a vertical (or other horizontal) surface and used that way. Thank you!
I want this box, not just for the function, but I love the look of it. I like the flat red textured finish. Very Handsome looking tool box. It needs to be in my garage.
I have this tool chest combo. Mine came keyed differently. I swapped the locks so that the top and bottom use the same key and the ring drawer uses the odd-ball key (which I never use). I love this box. It has, in my mind, only one significant flaw... the drawers don't lock open. They lock closed, but not open, so if you're on uneven ground you might find the drawers rolling back shut while you're trying to get tools out of them. If they had added the keep-open feature that the paperwork drawer has to all of the other drawers I would be very pleased, indeed. The drawers self-closing is an annoyance, but it's still the best tool chest I've ever had. The huge wide drawer in the bottom section holds 48" pry bars and full-size sledge hammers. Niiiiice. Mike
Awesome review. As a Milwaukee guy, I wanted this before even knowing the details. Seeing your review has cemented my unhealthy desire for a big red box in my garage.... Subscribed!
not to mention having the power step built in is a huge bonus, and the power to storage is a nice feature because it works for whatever brand you prefer, although I don't think the battery rack will work other company's batteries
I have this for my auto tech job. I bought it last month. Senior techs have told me "you were smart! tool boxes doesn't make you the money. what's inside does!" So far its holding up very nicely even when the middle long drawer is filled with the "long auto tech tools" to the max. Box safely holds the weight without trouble. My only complaint the drawer tracks seem to dry up too quickly even after applying silicone that "self shutting" doesn't seem to shut on its own. I am very pleased with it. And I hope Milwaukee makes a tool cart in the future so I can have matching pair.
I have had that same box for about 6 months now and love it. Im and at home mechanic and its works perfect for all my tools. I am really close to running out of room for tools but o well just means its time to buy another box.
i bought mine as a set , all came keyed the same ! if you purchase separately or not as a bundle, they keys may be different, as far as grease fittings on the Castors, i don't roll my tool boxes miles...only have a 40 x 60 garage...maybe only put a hundred feet a year on my tool chests...no odometer on mine :)... but awesome cabinet for the price !
Dig the review on this... very informative. AND, I actually was able to order one late last night online. Didn't get the notification that it was back in stock (even though I entered my email address to be notified) but checked randomly and was able to purchase one. So, if you're like me, and have been waiting for months for this come back --- it's back!
Just picked up one of these the other day, $898 canadian, a total perfect boxwith the exception of the grab handle broke (spot weld) Loved the tutorial, thanks
Good video it confirmed my choice to get one. I went to HD website and it was not listed anymore. I went to the store and they sold me their last floor model for $100.00 off. I took your suggestion and moved the locks. Thats a good idea thanks it worked out well. No box is perfect but this one is one of the best for the price. I just could not swing the high end multi thousand dollar boxes.
Spot on review Just bought this August, 2017, very impressed. I reversed the direction on both of the power strips Note - all three of my locks are keyed alike
I have just the bottom, I've never really been into having the tops I would rather do side cabinets, but it is by far the best box for the money, it has less drawers than the harbor freight but these drawers hold weight better and hold more weight than they are rated for and they open and close much smoother.
Could tell me if the lock 9bly locks one drawer or if all drawers become locked.. kind of a big deal to know before I buy. Gotta love fellow workers with sticky fingers lol
I've been eyeballing that box for a while. When I walked into Home Depot yesterday the price had dropped to $598 so I had to pull the trigger. That price probably indicates that a new version is coming out but that's ok, this is everything I need and more.
I just picked this up after watching this review and went to switch the locks like in this video but just a heads up, the newer versions of this box all three locks are different, and the casters have grease fittings.
Great review, thanks! I've been trying to buy one of these for a couple weeks now. I had to wait until my new garage was finished and now I'm having trouble getting one. They are apparently only going to be available online now at HD, not in stores, and they move fast once in stock. HD also jacked the price up $100.
dean kuczynski Thanks! I am sorry to hear that you are having trouble finding one.....I think the pricing seems to be an area-specific thing.....up here in the Northeast, they are still $698. I know that almost everywhere they sell as soon as they hit the floor, so HD removed them temporarily from their website......I assume the increased price is due to the demand being so high. As interest levels off, I would expect it to drop back down.
+Real Tool Reviews Home Depot's web site now states that the item has been discontinued. An email to Milwaukee Tool got me this response: "Thank you for your email to Milwaukee Tool. The 46" Rolling Steel Storage Chest and Cabinet was an exclusive item only offered through the Home Depot’s. We do not have a listing of which locations that has them available. This was a limited offer however, with the high demand for this item, we may have stock coming soon. We do not have an estimated time of arrival. Please let us know if we can be of further assistance."
+dean kuczynski I would assume Home Depot canceled it then.....Milwaukee would have zero incentive to discontinue a hot-selling item --- but HD was losing out on countless sales of their Husky brand boxes because anyone that saw these in-store would be buying the Milwaukee boxes instead. I have not seen one in a store for over a month....Hopefully they will be able to release another model in the near future, but if it is gone for good....thank Home Depot.
I sure wish that was available last year when I needed to purchase a new top and bottom box. I ended up getting the 46" Kobalt and am very pleased with it, but primarily being a Milwaukee tool owner, that system would have been nice to have. Oh well, I guess I'll have to wait for a few years before considering a Milwaukee chest and cabinet. Great review.
No speakers on the model I bought. The system I bought is the stainless steel version with a power strip on lower cabinet only. Very heavy like the Milwaukee and nice smooth operating drawers. If only I had waited another year, then that Milwaukee would be sitting in my garage. Soooo jealous!!!!
That's all I needed to pull the trigger. In fact I went in expecting to pay $698 and was thrilled when I found out the price had dropped. I had almost bought one the week before and got busy and couldn't get over to HD. Glad that happened.
Bought them together and all one key. Also just take out the rubber grommets and pull the power strip cord through. No need to take off drawer. Great box for my 700 price.
Old product but still a great review. I am liking Husky's new 52" at the same price point, but this chest is still good and was a steal at its original price.
This box actually looks really nice, some of their other ones aren’t as good. Only thing I’d like to see as a mechanic is a slightly deeper top drawer on the bottom cabinet with dual slides.
Bought the exact same box all the keys work on all 3 locks wondering if they gave u a mismatched set lol but would not mind a different key for the single drawer great video tho and best tool box I ever bought love it
Great Video. Milwaukee and Home Depot are sold out, at least where I live. And the Online status says "Currently Unavailable". I'm an old Milwaukee tool fool for decades. Disappointed in Milwaukee to not ensure every store has sufficient stock. This is a really good tool box set. Another thing, I wished they provided two 3" inch drawers on the roll cart. Most mechanics have SAE and Metric Deep or tall sockets and prefer to keep them in separate drawers. And include, either as an option or included, a holed shelf for long pry bars or anything that most mechanics will hang on the side of the rollaway.
+Hawaiian F150 Thanks! I wouldnt blame Milwaukee on this one.....it seems like Home Depot (exclusive seller of them) has not placed additional orders.....which I assume is because these killed the sales on the Husky brand boxes they sell. Hopefully Milwaukee will release a follow-up next year (bigger & better) with full width drawers & set up with the mechanic in mind. I personally use this box in the woodshop, not the garage, since I am not a fan of the shallow/narrow drawer layout. It works for misc carpentry tools, but for automotive tools you are 100% correct, it is not ideal.
Amazing video love the comparison about time someone compared harbor freight tools to the big brand names snap on tools are a joke don't know why anyone would buy them
Can you please check if any of the other brands of batteries fits in the slide-in battery storage too? I can see you have several other brands of slide-in batteries like Bosch and DeWalt too, so it should be easy to check which brands fits in the slide-in battery storage. Of course you could always cut a bit off the side if some of the other brand of batteries are wider, but it would be nice if they could just slide in and fit.
I bought this and the workbench one based mainly on your reviews. LOVE the boxes, they are excellent Today, I was in Lowes and saw a Craftsman knock off. About the same price, but absolute crap. Id' love to send you the pics of how cheap and thin the metal is, how it's not boxed or welded
I checked this out in HD this weekend. The drawers are very nice. Do you have any pneumatic impact wrenches to test in the "power tool organizer." I could see myself using the top for cordless tools and the bottom drawer for my impacts that are much heavier.
I bought the bottom portion of this tool chest because the SUV that I borrowed to buy this could barely hold the bottom portion. I never got the chance to buy the top portion and I am stuck with just the bottom portion. At my local home depots, the bottom portion is always out of stock and the top portion is always in stock. Anyone here only has the bottom one like me?
I could buy that box brand new off a friend. But the only thing that I don't really like is the fact that the bottom has massive drawers and as a mechanic I don't really know what I could put in them
I am looking for a box I can unload by myself if I can't get help so using handtruck and ramps from my truck. Would pull out the drawers to reduce weight but want to know if I can easily remove top chest from bottom, is it possible?
I unloaded this by myself out of the back of a Honda Pilot.....no drawers removed. However, the hardest part is setting the top of the box onto the bottom chest. You really do need two people for that. Also -- the top is literally held on with gravity + 2 very small L brackets on the rear corners....basically folded sheetmetal with 4 bolts each (Phillips screw heads).
Great review as always. Is that a new shop if so you should do a tour. Also are you going to have coverage from Milwaukee's media event when is the date it takes place?
Havick33 Thanks! Actually this is a new shop (woodshop) --- in addition to the regular garage. I am waiting on getting the rest of the stuff set up & installed....then I plan to do a shop tour/update video :) As far as the Milwaukee event, yep we are going.....I think we will be having a lot of real-time twitter updates with the new products as we see them, and will definitely have a good writeup with lots of pics on the website. The event is June 16th-17th.
Just to let you know I’ve had mine for a few years and now the paint has flaked off on a big spot. I’m not trying to say I didn’t get something on it but first time I’ve seen it flake off that much
You do really good reviews you dot seem biased going in that's the man thing never understand thumbs down the only reason I can see a thumbs down is potty mouth or biased things like that GOOD JOB
Thanks a lot! There are a lot of trolls out there.....it just lets me know that they also are watching......funny thing though, since clicking/watching increases the engagement --- they actually help me get more popular, so the jokes on them! :)
I don't know why so many words was miss spelled should of reread it before posting I was in a hurry but hopefully you got what I was putting out GOOD JOB HATERS WILL HATE
With US General Gen2 boxes out, would you recommend their 44in or this? I do have M18 tools so could take advantage of some of the features in this box. Use is mainly automotive.
+bighunterman77 I highly doubt it....They have a similar design, but I cant imagine that either would agree to purchase them from the OEM if they were selling to the direct competition also.
