Setting the M12 to speed 1 is for high torque drilling. Using speed 2 for high torque drilling is just asking for it to fail or cut out. I have absolutely no problems drilling anything that requires high torque with my Gen 2 M12 hammer drill in speed 1 - it's a small-ish sized beast......

I bought my m12 drill as a screw driver. The hammer function is just a bonus. The m18 is just to big for light work.

100% agree! The only time I use my M18 is for mixing thin-set and ice fishing.

Great video! Did you test the drills on Speed 2 the entire time? I suppose if someone only had the M12 Fuel hammer drill and needed to complete multiple holes with the larger spade bits, they could always drop the speed down to Speed 1. That will provide the drill more torque even though it would take longer to complete all of the tasks.
@TeamDIYNow
@TeamDIYNow Год назад
Yes, both drills were set to speed 2. Your right speed 1 would have increased the torque, however I left in speed 2 to see the max the tool could do.

M12 would've ate in speed 1. Ask me how I know.
@Justin-C

I was pretty impressed that it did as well as it did on speed 2. Speed 1 would've handled the 1.25" bit like nothing

Got the 4 Generation M18 its nice but I still think my FLEX TURBO HAMMER DRILL with the 3.5 and 6.0 STACKED LITHIUM has a little more power I will be doing some testing after the new year

That's what speed 1 is for. The M12 has only about 1/3 the torque of it's bigger brother, but if you put it in speed 1 it can usually handle it.

I'm new with buying Milwaukee tools and interested in buying the M12 fuel impact driver on the home depot website but I'm confused with the generation versions. How would I know if I'm buying the M12 fuel impact driver gen1, gen2 or gen3 model? Any help would be appreciated.........
@TeamDIYNow
@TeamDIYNow Год назад
Good question as it can be confusing on how they are listed. Milwaukee usually will have in the description gen3, etc when they are initially released. However, after they deplete the previous generation inventory, they typically quietly remove the gen2, gen3, etc in the description (or atleast Home Depot does). Here are the latest model numbers for both the impact driver and hammer drill. Also they do make a combo set which has both which is number 3 here. If you do a search with these model numbers you will see various other listings with additional batteries as well. Hope this helps. I have a dumb question to ask, I'm new to these power tools and if you couldn't afford to purchase but one, either the hammer drill or the impact driver which one would you purchase. The reason I ask, from my research on the two, the hammer drill can do everything that the impact driver can do and vise versa, but everyone is switching over to the impact driver. I'm just a diy around the house guy so any help would be appreciated.

Good question, it really just depends on what need out of the tool. The M12 gen3 hex impact driver will allow you to drive very large screws with good control (they are loud tho). If you have never used impact driver, the best way I can explain is the variable trigger allows you to sink screws to the perfect depth almost every time as you can easily throttle it down. If you have the need for drilling holes, then you would probably want to get the drill as you can also screw in screws. Another option is the M12 Fuel screwdriver which has the hex connection on the end but has all the drill options (I have video of this tool coming out soon): www.homedepot.com/p/Milwaukee-M12-FUEL-12V-Lithium-Ion-Brushless-Cordless-1-4-in-Hex-2-Speed-Screwdriver-Tool-Only-2402-20/203835505. Hope this helps.

In my opinion, just buy the impact. When I first started working as an installer, all I had was my m12 impact, and it did everything I ever needed. After a while, I finally bought the m18 hammer drill as I sometimes work in live office spaces so I bought the drill for its quietness, as a courtesy. But honestly, I could have gone forever with that impact. Some of the other guys were surprised that it was as powerful as their (older) fullsize drills/impacts while being much smaller and lighter.

So I tried my gem 3 with a 11/64 titanium bit with 2.5ho battery...drill into 3/8 steel. .. heat up and cut off after bout 4 holes.my gen 1 didn't heat up as much thou. ...dunno if is a design thing with the gen 3....other ppl notice the heat issue as well
@TeamDIYNow
@TeamDIYNow Год назад
I haven't noticed any overheating with mine. Have you tried different bits? Colbalt bits typically will go through steel better so they may give you more run time.

The Gen 3 is more powerful so more power more heat

The tools have more torque when in speed 1 and the m12 will most likely do the 1.25" on speed 1. Idk i have never used it but maybe even do bigger holes for pipes?😎😅
@TeamDIYNow
@TeamDIYNow Год назад
Yea you are right, I have done some follow up test with this M12 drill and confirmed you can cut even larger holes in speed 1. If you're going to do bunch of hoes the M18 would work better, however if only a few this M12 drill is impressive.

I have rohm chuck that i put on my m18 gen 3..i want to know if the m12 gen 3 has same chuck model some says m12 chuck is shallow.
@TeamDIYNow
@TeamDIYNow 11 месяцев назад
Correct the M12 chuck is a little bit shorter. It probably has something to do with it not having the torque of the M18 so the larger size isn't required. With that said, you may be able to interchange as they are both held in by a simple chuck screw. Not sure if these will help, but here are a few parts list for these drills: documents.milwaukeetool.com/54-24-2260.pdf (3404) documents.milwaukeetool.com/54-06-5010.pdf (2803) documents.milwaukeetool.com/54-24-5010.pdf (2804)

Agree if looking for maximum power the M18 is going to win all day long especially when the price is comparable. However, if looking for lightweight and compact that can handle 99% of DIY task this M12 is the better choice in my opinion. The only time I find myself using the M18 is when someone else is already using my M12. Depending on the job you can't go wrong with either choice.
@illiniwood
@illiniwood Год назад
@@TeamDIYNow Also, if you're doing a job overhead you'll appreciate the M12 real quick. With that M18 and a 5A battery you'll definitely feel the burn.
@WeldingForJesus
@WeldingForJesus Год назад
Being end of January, it has shrunk to roughly $10. And as long as you do not do light work overhead all day long, that is a given win for the M18 in my book.

I have used both of these drill for drilling through metal with cobalt bits and I prefer the M12 as you want a slower rpm for metal. I will see what I can do for a follow up video.
