This is for you, Ray. May your music live forever.
This is the first song which really impressed me in my whole life. It was like a lightning strike in my mind and I liked it from the very first notes. This happened when I was at the tender age of 3.
And this is the first song I began to work on when I started to seriously think to play keyboards, 17/18 years after (a bit too late I know).
In other words, this song started it all. And now I covered it, all by ear as my habit :-)
That haunting Ray's keyboard line it's so ipnotic, a true masterpiece, together with the interaction of Robbie's guitar. Well, this whole song is a masterpiece, one of the Doors' top songs.
I played it over a base given by a person which sent to me some Doors' bases without the keyboard lines and Jim's voice (Thanks mr. Claudio G.!). To make Jim singing in the song again, I searched on RU-vid for a video of Riders On The Storm with Jim's voice only, I took the audio part from it, sliced the individual verses and put them on the base. Finally I played the keyboard line, which I panned left in the stereo field, like in the original song (on the right there's the guitar).
The Rhodes piano sound it's being played thru the Electro 3's onboard Fender Twin amp's simulation, with a bit of overdrive and some EQ to approach the original sound.
I hope you like my cover. I still have to improve my dynamics control, so the piano it's played a bit rough in some parts, sorry for that.
As usual, constructive comments and criticisms are welcome :-)

One thing, I'm noticing in this cover that makes it stand out, is that you have added either reverb or chorus in the keys and that gives out an ethereal feeling in your sound, which is exactly what Ray went for back then. You sir deserve a bigger audience and way more views!
@mima85
@mima85 5 лет назад
Thanks for your appreciation :-) The main effect I used here for the Rhodes is tremolo (not chorus) and just a bit of reverb. This was how Ray did it at the times. I used also the Fender amp simulation which is embedded in the keyboard (Rhodes pianos at the times used to be recorded by placing the microphone near their amplifiers, usually such amps being Fenders) and did some EQing to approach as much as I could to the original sound.

One of the most atmospheric, haunting pop-rock melodies ever put to vinyl. It was so weird in the Summer of 1971...the first time i heard it on CKLW was the day Jim Morrison died. I'll never forget it. I was 13 yrs old.

I don't consider it pop at all, I feel that it is classic rock in its entirety, it even has psychedelic overtones. I would even go so far as to say that it is a post-psychedelic song.

It seems when you are searching for lessons, you find different levels of lessons... 1) basic singalong. 2) trying to immulate the actual artist, and 3) finding the actual rendition of the song. Sometimes 1 or 2 is good enough, but sometimes you want #3, and this is it. It's as difficult as finding the REAL way to play the simple John Lennon "Imagine"!

@mima85
@mima85 6 лет назад
Well, not really that hard, it's just a Emin doric scale played in reverse. It's just a matter to find the right fingering, exercising it a bit, and there we go. The really hard part is to play the piano and "bass" parts together. It's a quite challenging hand coordination job, which for Ray (and probably for most professional keyboard players as well) was a natural thing to do. For me, as I'm a novice, it's a matter of a lot of time spent in exercising and trying to get the things right.

That was just beautiful! I am a guitar player, looking to get into keyboard playing and viewing this song from a very different perspective now (the keyboard) is exciting. I've always admired Ray Manzarek's ability and to compose this amazing music, is incredible...even just playing it, is highly admirable. For me, I don't know how you seperate the bass side from the melodic side, surely it must be very confusing to start with. I guess you just practice and wait for your brain to do the muscle memory thing. Anyway, is highly impressive that you have accomplished this feat, you are an inspiration to an aspiring keyboard novice! Thank you! 🤤
@mima85
@mima85 Год назад
Indeed, Ray was a genius with a lot of musical taste, and there's plenty of that in every song he wrote. Of course learning a Doors' song, or any other song with a bass line to be played with the left hand while the right hand does its thing is quite confusing at the beginning. Parts have to be learned and exercised separatedly, then slowly brought together. And when you start to be confident at playing the two parts together, exercise, exercise and again exercise, until you reach the target level of skill. It takes a lot of time and patience, at least for a non-professional, amateur keyboardist like me. Thank you for your appreciation :-)

You don’t play all the bass, I know, it’s hard
@berenhamilton3321
@berenhamilton3321 6 лет назад
he really didnt have to play the bass because the bass on the record was done by Elvis's bassist
@mima85
@mima85 6 лет назад
I play the bass line one octave higher with the piano, and I play it very lightly to avoid conflicting with the real bass. Like Ray did in the original record.
@berenhamilton3321

mima14031985 damn I didn’t know that, thank you! When I record keyboards I usually do the keyboards as the first track with a drum track and afterwords I put whatever like bass and I have had problems with keyboard bass morphing with the bass track and making just a blob of bass.
@mima85
@mima85 6 лет назад
You should play your keyboard parts without going too much in the bass registers, otherwise happens exactely what you experienced. A hint, if your keyboard parts go too much in the bass registers (because for example you put chord roots in the lower octaves) EQ it to lighten up the bass bands, and reinforce the mid-high bands. In this way they'll fit without clogging the mix.

Ray Manzarek is the best keyboard player ever.
@mima85

Maybe not "the best" in absolute terms, but one of the best for sure. He didn't do a lot of things complexity-wise in his keyboard lines, but he put great musical taste and intention in everything he did.

Now you just need to get that signature piano run in the beginning with left hand bass :D
@mima85
@mima85 4 года назад
Actually I can do it, but I just wanted to stick to what Ray did originally. Also because as I'm using the sustain pedal for the descending scale, I'd hold the bass notes too and I'd make them muddy.

Amazing cover! I kinda strugle with finger pattern on up-down solo 0:20. If I noticed corectly he used 3 fingers, I've seen another videos where they use 4 fingers. For me is easiest way to play it with 2 fingers. What is right way to play it? (I don't want teach myself any bad habbits)
@mima85
@mima85 7 лет назад
Hi Jakub, thanks for your appreciation. I'll tell you, the right way to play that scale is the one which you feel more confortable :-) It's not a technical exercise where you have to play with precise fingering, you have freedom of choice.

Great cover but Ray Manzarek would play the bass line with his left hand on the keyboard along with the melody. Other than that it's great
@mima85

Actually is what I'm doing here... with the left hand I'm doubling the bass line one octave higher with the keyboard, as Ray did in the original.
