I guess that boy doesn't like grandma's unsophisticated behaviours and the traditional custom of Korea.. So I think "Grandma smells like Korea" that expressions are constructed from the child's perspective because that boy doesn't like his grandmother. Many young children in Korea love their grandparents and grandparents, but they smell of old people and are scared. Especially, some children born and raised in cities do not like the Korean countryside very much. I was also scared when I had to sleep with my grandpa, but when I realiezed my grandpa is gone by my me.. I just cried a lot because I couldn't say "I love you" so much..

So far, Steven is the only Asian actor I saw in American entertainment having a role as a normal guy. People don't realize how sadly the American media discriminates against race. It's kind of funny but true is that I never saw an Asian man making out or even hugging a girl on TV until Glenn in TWD. Asian men are always in a role as funny, submissive, nerdy, passive, and what have you. On the other hand, it is a quite different story with Asian women. I really don't want to elaborate on this but I think you know what I mean. Anyway, it's good to see some changes. By the way, this movie was made in the USA with many American actors with American everything. Anyone know why this film is listed as a foreign film?

Minari is a edible weed grows mostly in Eastern Asian countries. Its strong and peculiar smell and taste makes korean foods' taste that has minari in it really unique. Unfortunately, some young native koreans hate the strong-green-grass-smell of minari since it's very strong. So probably some part of young Korean-Americans would hate it too. If i'm assuming correctly, i think the director is trying to tell the story of all three different generations of a Korean-American family who have different perspectives and thought processes.

I see a lot of people commenting and saying "wow, another good Korean movie." Make no mistake, this is not a Korean movie. This is an American movie and possibly one of the most American movie that has come out in a long while. This tells the story that is fundamentally American, a son and daughter of immigrants growing up with 2 cultures, and having to weave around and find their identity. It also tells the story of recent immigrants looking to make a foundation for their children. If you are not a Native American (as in part of a Tribe), you are either 3 things: 1). you are an immigrant 2). you are a son or daughter of immigrants, or 3). you are a descendent of a son or daughter of an immigrant. They are all tied in. There is no "non-immigrant white person." That is a complete and utter myth.

Just saw the film, and I have got to say that it brings me a plethora of memories from my childhood in South Korea. Although it has been a couple of years since I came to the U.S., I still remember that particular fragrance of my 할머니 (grandmother in Korean), and I still remember arriving to our first house, what a surreal feeling. But I also felt a profound sense of pride to be a Korean-American, because I am living in a nation that contains a treasure trove of different ethnicities, cultures, and all walks of life that coalesce into the United States of America. Sure, we may be going through hard times now, but I know that we will one day rise again, not only as a united nation, but also as an accepting nation, a nation devoid of hate and replete with dignity and pride. People may call me trite, others may call me a dreamer, yet this nation was built upon dashingly beautiful dreams, was it not?

As a Mexican-American, son of two immigrants, and growing up in a predominantly White and conservative area, this trailer hit close to home (as I'm sure it did to many other children of immigrants). That scene in which the White kid was staring back, I experienced that many times when I was growing up (at school, restaurants, and while shopping). Growing up with the traditions and culture from your ancestral land while trying to assimilate in land that your parents didn't grow up in, I experienced that. Being bilingual and bicultural, I am that. Can't wait for this film to come out and watch it!

The scene with the boy does looks like racism, but watching the movie, it was just curiosity, he never saw faces like theirs. He turned out to befriend the kid and even the kid's father wasn't racist towards the kid and they were shown like the typical cowboy from the south.
@buxadonoff
@buxadonoff 3 года назад
@Yeirim Kim I mean, you can take it as you want, but to me it's expected to be weirded out by different cultures and physical aspects that are totally foreign to you, especially a kid. You gotta remember this is the 80's in a small town in the south of the USA. The kid probably never seen an asian person before, he was curious, it wasn't racism to me. Later on in the movie they play together and the kid never show ill intent to the kid. When his dad showed up there was clear tension between everyone, but even the dad never said anything bad about the kid being different or their family.
@buxadonoff
@buxadonoff 3 года назад
@Yeirim Kim I understand what you're saying, but kids don't have much filter, they are not mature yet. In the movie the asian kid complained about his grandma smell, he wasn't aware he was not only disrespecting her but also potentially hurting her feelings. Now, adults on the other hand shouldn't say things like that, even if they are thinking it.

I love this movie on a deeply personal level, like many other people. I myself am a Korean-American who was born in an immigrant family. I found myself identifying with David’s character in particular. Maybe it’s just the fact that I’m the son. Watching this movie took me back to those warm moments when everything was wondrous and you could explore so much and learn about so much new stuff. So many shots in this movie were reminiscent of my own life; the director did a fantastic job translating his own personal experiences onto film. The memories of staying awake while your grandma snores next to you, the calendar paper, the bringing of red pepper powder and dried anchovies from Korea… beautiful movie.

Someone explain to me why this film was not considered for the Best Motion Picture Drama award at the Golden Globes but was instead placed in the Foreign Language category. Because they spoke in Korean most of the time instead of English? Despite being an American production with American actors about Americans with an immigrant backstory. Goes to Shows how far we have yet to go in terms of progress. And how America still view Asian immigrants as perpetual foreigners.
@lallelakos
@lallelakos 3 года назад
Golden Globes used to have Best English Language Foreign Film category for non-US films on English Language. They merged that category with Best Picture categories so now all English Language films can be nominated for Best Picture Musical, Comedy or Drama no matter if they are US or British, Canadian, Australian, German, Chinese etc. as long as they are on English Language. On the other side you have Best Foreign Language category for domestic or foreign films that are not on English Language. Why are you politicizing something that is known and established for years. Category rules are quite simple and fair and non discriminatory.
@user-ot2nh8qb7d
@user-ot2nh8qb7d 3 года назад
@@lallelakos It’s as you said they USE to have ‘Best English Language Foreign Film’ category until they merged it with ‘Best Picture.’ What part of any of this set in stone? Changes can be adapted over time if they really wanted to. Really, what it boils down to is ‘Best English Picture” and ‘Best Non-English Picture.’ And just call a spade a spade. If you call it ‘Best Picture,’ it shouldn’t matter where that film was produced and in what language. Otherwise it sounds a bit like a cop out.
