Day two of the five-day Mind & Life Dialogue “Reimagining Human Flourishing” at the Main Tibetan Temple in Dharamsala, HP, India on March 12-16, 2018, organized by the Mind & Life Institute, focussing on education in light of His Holiness the Dalai Lama's longstanding priority and deep commitment to secular ethics education initiatives. The program gives attention to social-emotional education and how compassion, ethics, and attention training can be more fully integrated into existing educational frameworks.

First hour is great. I have always wished they would teach social skills in school, it will make a big difference for kids to gain perspective on other ways of being.

Am I the only one who thinks treating kids like lab rats could lead to trauma? Amen to Sofie/Sophie, who mentioned the educators/parents need help.

Identifying ethical issues is useless if the skills and resources necessary to avoid unethical behaviors aren't supported. Schools could be growing their own food, teaching carpentry and sewing, music and arts, taxes, business, many real world skills, as well as providing avenues for exploration of personal interests which is where the real learning happens anyway, and ethically, how to fight corruption, while teaching them how to meditate about love and compassion for oneself and others, instead of studying them and taking saliva samples which may lead to broken trust, especially after they have grown up and become so socially oriented, compassionate and loving that they have no real hope of surviving. Kids are totally underestimated in their ability to study those who are studying them.

Maybe I don't get your meaning but if you mean that it is acceptable for children to submit themselves to authority figures who treat them as test subjects during the precious impressionable years of their schooling rather than imparting to them the best knowledge they have for those children to survive in the world, with some notion that it would end violence in the world, I disagree with you. Teaching compassion and emotion management can help, I agree, providing materials and a nurturing environment free from harassment can help, providing real life skills that lead to, at minimum, the ability to feed, clothe and house themselves and potentially others and combat violence and unethical behavior can help. Forcing kids to go along with thoughts and ideas they may disagree with, be test subjects, or submit to saliva samples is totally unrelated to schooling, in my opinion...optional studies are different but imo should not part of the school system. :)

Food shortages can lead to violence and yet there wasn't a single lesson on how to grow food or crops or pursue new ways of doing so in my schooling. :'( So to me teaching compassion and mind training is good but there is a lot more to me the school system maybe could focus on to promote a kinder and more compassionate world with an experiential approach, by actually growing food, for example. :)
