wooo I feel like I haven't written in months and was so worried that I would never find that spark to create poems again but I'm so glad this happened
this poem is one I've been thinking about a lot, I travel into London for work and fun and I have a lot of thoughts about it
London is my home and always will be and holds a special place in my heart
However, to think it perfect would be a crime, London has its faults- ones that I don't necessarily have all the solutions for
I just wanted this poem to look a little more into this clean, bright souvenir of London that I always see
[mind the gap]-manisha premlal
[mind the gap]
bricks and mortar,
tracks and trams.
this city is a walking contradiction
commuters scuttle onto tubes,
stone faced and silent,
busker's voice robbed in the halls- this act is violent
a stampede of heels,
single file marching.
children wake up missing meals,
spend their whole day starving
madam spare me a pound,
november brings a chill,
you're going home safe and sound,
with a plush bed to fill
[mind the gap]
we both take a pill,
but mine's with a side of disdain,
you're in for the thrill,
I'm just trying to hide my pain
ambulances chase after our youth,
headlines blame it on knives,
see an eye for an eye becomes a tooth for a tooth,
our city's bleeding out lives
housing prices are simply spinning,
ms prime minister no one's winning
this situation is out of control,
please start seeing society as a whole
national health is desperately struggling,
staff are pushed and pulled and juggling
urgent call for nurses to stay,
try to rethink their hours and pay
[mind the gap]
you can try to jump
but you just might fall,
this city maybe wasn't built for us all
this city is bright lights and city sights,
this city is shattered glass and gang fights
tall skyscrapers knocking past council flats,
in london you're never too far from a rat
