This video is an educational collaboration with Derwent.
Learn the technique of grisaille painting using the set of 12 Derwent Inktense pencils. Inktense is permanent once dry so you can easily layer without lifting up the previous layers of pigment. This is a beginner-level tutorial and I encourage anyone to try it!
Supplies:
Inktense pencils set of 12: Amazon: amzn.to/3jALxd3 or Blick: shrsl.com/3gsqe
White inktense block shrsl.com/3gsqg
Hot press watercolor paper amzn.to/3E7HA9j

I love that you teach grisaille, I’ve never seen anyone else teach this technique. I saw a tutorial you did on grisaille a few years ago, I think maybe that was in acrylic or oil. I have some water soluble oils that I’m trying pluck up courage to try, I’m not really interested in acrylic. However, I do have a lot of Inktense products that haven’t fulfilled their potential so I’m delighted by this tutorial - thank you.

Absolutely stunning! Best use of Inktense I’ve seen. Also wish you said the comment about teenage boys drawing and moving into painting about three years ago when my son was a gorgeous artist with charcoal and a 8b pencil! Absolutely super but unfortunately he chose art in secondary school as a fun - enjoy the moment when I’m not doing academic stuff subject! He loved drawing. He has a very realistic style and his teacher tried to change his realistic style to Picasso! If I had shown him your version of pencil to paint - he would have loved it! Unfortunately, since getting a great grade in secondary school he’s not picked up a pencil! I believe artist styles should not be messed with! I’ll show him the pencil to paint idea just to try and encourage him to try art again! Thank you

Your intro was so fancy and professional, confused me for a minute 😋 (not a criticism of your normal format at all!). What a fantastic technique, this really speaks to me. I learned a lot just from watching you do the underpainting, the coloring was almost incidental. Doing the shading really helped me see the subjects in pieces and shapes, instead of what my brain says the whole composition should look like. Will definitely try this, thanks!

This was a great video. I often use this technique with other mediums like acrylics and ink as the 'grisaille' layer. I did a raven on black using white ink first to paint the values and then I glazed over it. It came out much better than I expected. Inktense make a wonderful medium for this process, too. Thanks again!

@@thefrugalcrafter I actually wound up taking the reference photo into Photoshop and desaturating the color and then inverting it, so the lights showed as darks and the darks as lights. It looked like a negative of film from the olden days. LOL. That helped switch my brain a little bit when doing those values. The process worked very well overall. Thanks Lindsay, this made me feel like I was back at art school (TAFE) in 1993. Interesting technique with the black first, never seen that before! We had an A1 drawing of "eggs and wide white ribbon standing edge on, around the eggs", we only were encouraged to only use the tip of the pencil, rather than the side. it took weeks! One lamp as the light source, it was very difficult to get the egg shape, and the shell to look soft, matte, with subtle values. It seems like these rudimentary studies are not done so much anymore, but the values are valuable! I never would have thought to use the inktense black pencil on it's side for all that area...and for this particular old master technique, appropriate. Every object that sits on something, has a tiny thin shadow line underneath it too, this gives a solid base to stop it floating off. In kindred spirit, Eliza Australia 15th of April 2022, 11:21am

@@thefrugalcrafter thanks for this advice. The last time I practiced this, I made several renditions. I only have a small set of inktense and this idea gives me versatility. Tfs

Hi Lindsay, Great tutorial! I saw another tutorial where you used the Grisaille technique. That one was live when Sarah was helping you. I have a QUESTION: Could I use water soluble graphite for the grey undertones for this technique? I don't have Intense to use. Thank you.

That would lift and get muddy. Do you have a black waterproof ink? India or acrylic would work for the grayscale and then you can go over with watercolor.

Could you spray a fixative over the top? Derwent also has a blender that will work over the last layer of color.

Love. Ill definitely try. Can this be done on the sand grain, mi teintes, or cold press paper?

I recommend a watercolor paper because of the amount of water we use here. Pastel and mixed media paper might pill at this much water. I have a free paper class tonight at Michael's online. There is a link on my community tab. There will be so much info!

I’m starting a new one with Lemons in a bowl on a white cloth. I made the background purple . Should my shadows be that color too or can I use the black?

Paintvwhat you see. Look at those undertones. Black is very harsh tho.

Can Inktense Pencils be purchased individually? I have the set of 12, but need to replace a couple colors.

Lol I’ve had my eye on that 30$ brush washer on Amazon for like weeks. But I splurged last month on a rolly cart for all my ink and ephemera

If you eat mushrooms or tofu they come in plastic boxes with ridges on the bottom and are good for water buckets as you can get the paint out easy.

For doing grisaille in watercolor, is there an color you can substitute for neutral tint?
@OhJodi69
@OhJodi69 2 года назад
The dark layer has to be "permanent", so it doesn't pick up again when you paint the colors over it. You can use india ink.
