I am not sure whether I am a huge fan of Verdi’s Ballo in maschera. I like the simplicity of his earlier works like I Masnadieri or Macbeth better.
But Renato’s aria „Eri tu“ is perfection - the most thrilling and touching music. But what in addition makes this aria so exceptional is the rawness of Renato‘s hurt masculinity and his vulnerability. One can almost sense that „Eri tu“ is a kind of precursor of Otello’s aria „Dio, mi potevi, scalgiar“- and Otello is not too bad of an opera, is it?
For those who do not know what this aria is about:
In Eri tu Renato deals with the presumed extramarital affair of his wife with his best friend. In the context of this video it is not important, if they actually had an affair, if they did the coitus thing or not. Important is only that Renato believes they did. And we, thanks to Verdi, can witness how he in his aria is dealing with his feelings of betrayal, loss, anger and love - it’s a true rollercoaster.

Dmitri Hvorostovsky is incomparable, an impressive number of people were marked by his personality, because it is not only the beauty of his voice, acting talent, the magic of his personality, but you feel his honesty, the fact that he is on stage to sing and live for us, with us. At first, I may have loved other arias more, but his performance on stage in this case is overwhelming. I can't see this aria performed (and many others) by anyone but him, everything else pales in comparison to his performance...

The aria…you want to marry and have children with it. Sorry, it’s not allowed. Ha ha. My partner and I were at the Metropolitan Operas 50th anniversary gala at Lincoln Center when Dimitri walked out on stage. He sang Cortigiani. The audience went wild. It sounded like thunder. He loved the Met and the NY audience loved him. I believe it was the last time he performed before he passed away. We were fortunate to see him perform at the Met many times.👏👏

This is a safe place so you can express your love for this aria any way you want 😄 I am sure many, many fans envy you for the opportunities you had to experience Hvorostovski live. One of my fondest memories is him rehearsing and performing Pique Dame at the Vienna State Opera when I was the assisting stage director, way down at the bottom of the hierarchy. And he couldn't have been nicer to me or anyone involved in this production, from the extras to the stage hands or, of course, his colleagues. And always with this little slightly ironic smile...

I am just discovering your videos now and am enjoying them so much - thank you! And thank you for making this video about Dmitri Hvorostovsky singing Eri Tu. Love his richly beautiful, expressive voice and his wonderful acting abilities (and I will always be so heartbroken by his loss!) Another selection which might compete for greatest baritone aria of all time is Prince Yeletsky's Ya Vas Lyublyu from the Queen of Spades by Tchaikovsky, which Hvorostovsky also sang better than anyone else. And of course O Carlo, Ascolta from Verdi's Don Carlos - another aria sung so wonderfully by Dmitri. *chef's kiss* ❤

I prefer the flute, it's gentleness and beauty contrasts with Renato's pain and anger he is trying to hide. What a beautiful aria. I love Hvorostovsky, in opera as well as Russian songs and operetta. He sings with such feeling, he is so expressive. I have a great photo of him and Obraztsova from her 75th Birthday celebration at Bolshoi, 2 months before she died. So sad they both died of cancer, he was still so young. Have you heard him sing Pushkin's poem Fountain of Bakhchisarai?

No doubt that the flute is better in the end but I am always surprised how touching this moment is as well when played on the piano during rehearsals. I have to admit that I haven’t even heard of „Fountain of Bakhchisarai“. More homework for me to do 😄

@@peterpawlik2495 Instead of describing the sad story in detail I am posting a short version of the ballet that is pretty self explanatory. Famous Galina Ulanova is the Polish Princess who with her fiance and family is in a palace next to Khan's Palace in Crimea. Khan murders Maria's fiance and her family and kidnaps her, falls in love with her and his jealous concubine Zarema danced by Maya Plisetskaya stabs Maria next to the fountain which actually exists. Here is the description from the poster of the ballet: Bakhchisarai is in the Crimea, near Yalta. Bakhchisarai Palace was originally built in the sixteenth century and has been repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt since. The fountain, which actually exists, is called the Fountain of Tears. In the film version the roles were danced by Galina Ulanova as Maria, Maya Plisetskaya as Zarema, Pyotr Gusev as Khan Girey, and Yuri Zhdanov as Vaslav. This is the only known footage of Ulanova and Plisetskaya, who succeeded Ulanova as prima ballerina assoluta of the Bolshoi Theatre, dancing together. Incidentally, Ulanova was a teacher and mentor of Nikolai Tsiskaridze whom you saw dancing. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NlNj0vpJqdQ.html Her ius Hvorostovsky singing it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3Zmci2CP2pw.html

WOW! ❤❤ There just aren't the words to express how sublime that performance of this wonderful aria was. Dmitri Hvorostovsky is so very much missed. 😢 As for another baritone aria, what about that gorgeous thing from Don Carlo - O Carlo Ascolta - with which Dmitri won the Cardiff Singer of the World?

I love Don Carlo too. I had got tickets to see Placido Domingo in it a couple of years' ago at the ROH. He had to cancel because of the covid outbreak, and the scandal outbreak. Sigh. I, for one, would love it if you did do a programme on this, especially if Dmitri Hvorostovsky featured in it. It will be great to hear your views. It's not often you get to hear the opinions of someone who knows what they are talking about!

Oh my gosh that opening. Yes, I agree completely about the early Verdi being better and Trovatore bei g the weakest of the top three. Instant like. Hvorostovsky was taken from us much to soon. I just vastly prefer the quieter, internally tortured characters in opera. They just seem more three dimensional. Love it! Best wishes. P.S. do you think comparing there would be some merit to comparing this aria with King Markes Monologue from Tristan, seeing as Wagner and Verdi are always contrasted with each other?

Thank you for your kind comment! Yeah, we need more Hvorostovsky in our lives... I was thinking of making a kind of "best of Hvorostovsky" some time in the future. And since I am a huge Britten fan the suggested aria is definitely on my list 🙂

His passing was a great loss. Maybe you have some minutes to listen to Ettore Bastianini's Eri Tu.
@errollevine1746

I think a baritone aria that competes with Eri Tu is "Nemico della Patria" - Gerard's aria from Andrea Chenier. As sung by Piero Cuppuccilli it is very powerful and moving and transcends in its fine libretto (pertaining to how the great principles of the French Revolution were distorted by events) the narrower relationship issues in Eri Tu. (See ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gQXYeZNKwTE.html). Thanks though for this fascinating insight into this great Verdi aria. Another equally good Verdi baritone aria is "Di Provenza il mar, il suol". See Hvorostovsky in ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gbJYvh8D1Rc.html.

Thank you for your comment and for mentioning Nemico della patria - I love this aria. And no doubt it is equal in difficulty, beauty and subtle psychology to Eri tu.I think I am not revealing a secret here that RU-vidrs make bizarre statements on their thumbnails in order to lure the viewers in. And I am guilty as charged 🙄 About Di provena Il mar: it's strange but as much as I adore the opera itself this aria never did the trick for me. I always found it to be slightly boring. I know: stupid of me but the heart wants what the heart wants 🤷‍♂😄

I have one minor quibble. I think that in referring to the characters in Verdi's Un Ballo in Maschera, we should not support the actions of the Neapolitan and Roman censors in the distant past who forced Verdi to change the assassinated Swedish monarch Gustavo to Riccardo as colonial governor of Boston and Count Anckarström to Renato. The Met has largely reverted to using the Swedish setting and names in its newer productions.
@peterpawlik2495
@peterpawlik2495 5 месяцев назад
Haven't thought about that but of course you are right. It's always the best course of action to show the original version which represents the author's/composer's vision of his or her work
