My mom lived as a child during that time in Atlanta. She recalled it to me when I asked after I watched this season and it sounds terrifying. Black kids she knew were taken. She's not sure that Wayne did it. But she did mention that it stopped after he was caught.

My issue with this show is nothing is followed up on. The BDK stuff is silly because we all know he doesn't get caught for years after this and not to mention the Holden panic attack thing was never really followed up on. And Wendy's romance was absolutely pointless overall.
@bink6778
@bink6778 4 года назад
I think we’re going to continue to get occasional scenes with BTK that are separate from the main plot for the rest of the series. BTK killed very sporadically over the course of the 70s and 80s, he would kill a few people and then stop for several years, then kill a few more people, stop for several more years etc etc. and even when he was killing the murders were usually several months apart. He wasn’t arrested until 2005. That timeline doesn’t really make sense to cover it in the main plot but as you guys mentioned, lets the audience have a firsthand account of one of the killers rather than hearing a retelling after the fact.
@eme.261
@eme.261 4 года назад
Dudes, he got the "first attack" of anxiety with Kemper because he realized how close he was to becoming an unwary victim. He was finally made aware of the truth-- not as an idea, but a reality. Holden lives in ideas. He was fascinated by the pathology of serial killers. He didn't respect how intelligent they were and how quickly they could and would kill their victims. If he'd told Kemper a lie in that moment, Kemper would have broken his neck without blinking an eye.

I think they brought in the kids situation because they are bringing back the question we had in season 1; are these monsters born or turned into this because of the environment they grew up in?
@combatwombat2134
@combatwombat2134 4 года назад
I feel like the Atlanta side could have been a bit shorter, plus Holden was dumb in how he dealt with the mothers of the lost kids. It would have allowed more time for BTK, which I feel is a much more interesting story. Especially since the Atlanta killer is still massively disputed, it feels like it was a hollow victory.
@yoslo6832
@yoslo6832 4 года назад
Combat Wombat we are too early for BTK to be caught. It’s important to show them grow. And how they finally do capture BTK.
@kevinw712
@kevinw712 4 года назад
But is there really much of an investigative side of the story to tell right now with the BTK killer? I'm sorta genuinely asking that, as I'm not at all sure. Especially given how we know the guy wasn't caught until about a decade ago, they're a LONG way from the finish, they don't seem to want to do a huge time line jump yet. Even though few prosecutions were done on the Atlanta case and the guy still swears his innocence, they at the very least have an incredibly compelling circumstantial case against Wayne Williams, hence why he's arrested. He did a ton of suspicious shit parallel to details of the case. I'm not sure if that meat of the story would be there yet to tell with BTK, to give it as much screen time as you're talking about. I do know that Fincher has said he's basically had a 5 season plan from the beginning for this. I don't know if that means they'll still give only cold open stuff to BTK then or not (or maybe just til 4). And Teddy commented here about the makeup department doing a great job in making the actors look similar to their real life counterparts, and in a way I hear what he's saying. As far as costuming and hair. But this season much more so than the first, I thought like practically half the actors had way too much like rouge on their face, or whatever the hell it was. After the first 2 episodes, I honestly thought maybe the color balance was off on my monitor.
@odigital-4815
@odigital-4815 4 года назад
I think they were going for a hollow victory, theres a good bit of realism to it. And I think it's in character for Holden to care about the mothers, while also being too socially inept to console, control, or offer them any sort of closure
@kevinw712
@kevinw712 4 года назад
@@odigital-4815 One of the details I felt like I wasn't quite correctly picking up during my watch, and they highlight the scene here in the review -- when Holden's racing to get the big wood white cross to the spot the march is ending up. And the mother, I'm blanking on her name, the primary mother that Holden seems to interact with once he's been all introduced, short hair and big Coke bottle-type glasses. The looks she was giving him, whenever he's booking forward or across with the cross under his arm and they happen to meet eyeline, I mean, it certainly didn't seem positive in any way. And yet I thought she kinda at least understood what he was trying to do there, and even if it "wasn't enough", she knew he was the last one to blame for that. That he was putting every ounce of himself into the thing.

I felt this season was weaker than the first. All the stuff focused on the child murders were great, and holdens arc started off great but kinda got dropped, the panic attacks disappeared after two episodes which i honestly found genuinely disrespectful, as someone that deals with anxiety and has several panic attacks, they dont just disappear like that, in if they do, especially if youre dealing with stress youre going to be worrying about having another one. i get the point you guys made bout him only getting it when he feels threatened, but it felt too weirdly disregarded to me, as if it was forced character struggle. i was bored to death by wendys whole sub plot, it felt so cliche and repetitive to contemporary social commentary, and while what went on with brians was interesting it was jarringly different. overall the writing felt very formulaic and predictable - not just the events, duh, but also the character arcs, it was so clear that everything away form the killers would have some relevance with the killers and how the arcs would progress. there are great aspects to this season, the acting is phenomenal -manson and son of sam being the standout killers to me, the final two episodes are pretty great, the directing is superb, it has great social commentary, but i was just let down by the character development, with the exception of Bill. Ted Gunn was a great addition to the cast, though.

Mindhunter is entertaining, but terribly flawed. I still think Jonathan Groff is miscast, but that annoyance is not as acute in Season 2, due in no small part to the shift from Ford to Tench and Carr. My criticisms of Mindhunter are many and in some cases detailed, but I'm not going to write a novel in a RU-vid comment, so I'll let two examples speak for themselves. 1) There is nothing to be gained by inventing a scenario in which Dennis Rader's wife "Joanne" (why they changed her name from Paula I don't know) catches him engaged in auto-erotic asphyxiation. It's needlessly salacious and adds grist to the mill of the argument that both factual & fictional productions about serial murderers are gratuitous. They also add to society's perverse mythologizing of such figures. 2) Inconsistency of character. How is it that Ford's supposed encyclopedic knowledge of serial murderers includes, to Tench's muted amazement, 1950's killer Harvey Glatman, 1950's crimes of Harvey Glatman, yet he's never even heard of Dean Corll, whose crimes not only occurred during Ford's career in law enforcement, but were greater both in terms of paraphilic violence and victim count? And why did they skim over the Candy Man sobriquet? Corll's nickname wasn't just down to his habit of giving children candy. His family owned a confectionery company in the Heights in Houston.

It is not all true, consider your sources, I have read all Douglas's novels even a few in hardback. The entire Ressler story line is phony, the few real aspects of the series, is a few interviews. Holden's feinting and panic attack inside the institution is a total fabrication. But he did suffer brain damage from exhaustion. My advise is : read the source material, i know its a very demanding harsh slog for movie critics. But if you fall into it, its rush for those who empathize with victim's and a sucker for the grotesque details, i admit, you will swallow hard......reading.
