That's so cool that they removed the curb ramp/curb cuts in the final scene, that's a great attention to historical accuracy since curb cuts like that weren't implemented in the states until the ADA in the 90's.
@@JJSogaard Probably historically accurate as the Americans with Disabilities Act passed in 1990. Thus pre 90, it would be rare/odd for sidewalks to have a ramp. But man, what attention to detail...
I recently heard about accessible sidewalks- the fact that these were edited out to fit the time period is such a subtle consideration- the attention to detail is staggering!
the nzone The reason Batman Vs Superman looks bad isn't because there is too much CGI it is because the VFX are not the best. You can see their green screening and alot of their lighting is inconsitent when looking at what was shot in camera and what wasn't.
LordVader1094 that's dumb. If you couldn't see it then there would be no need for it. The point of cgi is too make people see something that doesn't actually exist in real life at the time of shooting. I believe what you really mean is, "the best cgi is the one you don't notice". That implies that you can in fact see said cgi but you don't actually realize it is in fact cgi.
The Deuce is another show where you barely notice it. Thing is that it's way harder to do something convincingly that isn't existing in real life. But still I don't like these CGI overload movies at all, it's best used by enchanching the shot.
Mindblowing use of visual effects, the devil is in the detail and Mindhunter is layered in large and small details. So sad there is no third series being produced. Everyone whats to see BTK in action and caught.
"Why is it taking so long to make season 2, it's just a bunch of guys talking in rooms, it's not like there's a ton post post-production and VFX stuff."
As a child of the 70s and a teen of the 80s, I LOVE how much detail is placed to make it feel "right". Even down to the point where they delete the sidewalk handicap ramps that we all take for granted today. Amazing show, PLEASE COME BACK after this COVID-19 nightmare has ended!
"I wish we could get rid of that bridge in the background." "There's a container ship coming down river in about two hours. I'll have a word with its captain."
Thank you very much for all your feedback! For those of you interested in knowing the reel's bg music, it's Epic Stranger Synths by Prism-Music through Audiojungle.
This is a wonderful montage to watch. There is nothing more awe inspiring than watching a master of a craft. Also the way you've cut this with the music is just sublime. I keep coming back to it. I'd watch hours of this.
They did such a phenomenal job with this series. I love how most of the lighting is natural, and they made the color and atmosphere so drab, and dark. I noticed in the scenes where the agents are with family or doing things unrelated to the job the colors are much more vibrant and colorful
It is crazy some of the small details, like removing the wheel chair accessible ramps at cross walks. Which is great attention to details as I assume these where not common in the 70s.
I actually remember as a little kid when the crews came through our neighborhood and cut out the sidewalk corners to pour new ones with ramps. Yet another reason why the production value of this show is astounding.
amazing how our mind's easily accept the flat elements as 3d within context. once you see they are actually flat the illusion is broken, but before that it's totally convincing!
Anja Aleskari The lighting on the vehicles was incongruent with the surrounding scene. It looked soft and caused the cars to appear not fully rendered. Almost cartoonish. On top of that, the motion wasn’t very realistic by today’s standards. I thought it was easily the shoddiest effect in the entire series. The first episode suicide didn’t look great either, but at least that only lasted a few frames.
That is fantastic, I noticed it looked a bit too clean or a bit "off" in some shots when watching the show. But that was maybe like twice over the two seasons. Stellar work, you had me fooled/believe in the setting!
The use of CGI in this show is so smart ! Like I've noticed from time to time a few textures that didn't look natural but it's so well implemented in the picture that I didn't realize there were that many CG elements
Some of these you wouldn't even think of in terms of attention to detail. For instance: recreating the night lights of Sacramento from the air as it would have looked back in the 70s.
Wow. Absolutely incredible. Did not think incredible cgi could be used so elegantly in such simple shots. Even the tiny things like changing the layout of the city from the birds eye view or removing the kerbs to be period correct. Amazing
Something that has really caught my eye in this show is the impeccible level of historically accurate detail. I was convinced all of the cars and set dec was mostly cgi because it would be so damn hard to find all of those cars and kitchen items in decent, working conditions today. Most of the cars in this show are now rotted out shitboxes sitting in a farmers field decaying until they're dust! Where did they get all of those cars from?!
Honestly the got me on this one. I´m watching the show currently and never ever I was thinking that so much amount of VFX is involved. That´s the magic and illusion of movie making. Love it!
Honestly, as an aspiring comp artist starting to tap into light 3D work for now, this gave me a benchmark to aspire to for what i want to offer my clients, soon. No fancy high-poly modelling, just some good bread and butter invisible effects and period detail. Thanks for letting me look over your shoulder(s).
CGI is fantastic for adding subtle details that tweak the feeling and tone of a scene. Adding those trees and shrubs added a feeling of a well-kept community where people try to make their property look good as opposed to some bare yards where people leave them unkempt and barren. Plus putting taller trees in the horizon makes the places feel smaller and more intimate.
CGI made the right way. Gosh i love this completely invisible effects you would never notice when you see the series and how deeply and inmersive the work of the vfx team is made and how gives that extra touch to the whole image and feel of the series. Awesome work indeed.
I love the insane attention to detail! When I watch the show, nothing takes me out of the late 70's setting! It's like going back in time, it's awesome!
Fincher is a genius. Using and arranging CGI in a way, that we don´t notice it, while watching a scene, but still enhancing the scene with it and therefore making the setting, as a whole, very believable. Really, really smart way of using CGI. And the CGI in Fincher movies has always been very good, by the way. Not overdone, not cheap, but relly spot on to the tone of the scene and the setting.
If I didn't see that video I would NEVER say that TV Series has so much CGI. And this is probably best complement you can say to the artists behind it.
WHAT??! It's just a magic or kind of art. I just have seen the illusion. and The fact that montage scene which I like most is CGI just blows my mind, man...

The typography on the TV screens is "Arial" which is not period accurate.
@@dalton-at-work to be honest, I was just too lazy to look at the angles and stuff. I guess technically she's right. But the type didn't seem so out of time to me.
I always notice these little CG elements in the series, and I thought I was going crazy but they really are there! Really well done also, goes to show how ubiquitous Cg is to filmmaking nowdays, CGI matte environments for instance is just daily routine.
I love that all of this is possible but it also kind of bums me out. For example, I shouldn't care about a bunch of CGI TV's in a window but I kind of miss the days when a scene like that would have just been set up and shot. I can't even explain why. Very impressive work though.
I guess they go for a decision like which one is harder, to get 6-8 identical TVs from the 70s or do it using cgi? Uh... OK your comment is 3 years old, sorry for doing necromancy here. XD
Great Job. 3:55 just noticed: if sunlight was assumed that comes from the direction of building in BG , I think the shadows of two actors that should both toward to camera instead of two directions and being angled (one on left , one on right )
I really like how a lot of films and shows today use small VFX that aren't there to make it fantasy but just to make make production faster, cheaper, more practical as well as making the environments in every scene just right, regardless of uncontrollable conditions such as weather.
I've recently started working in film and jfc it's insane how much detail work there actually is. A lot of the time it just seems to be for the people making the film instead of what people will actually notice. But for period pieces it makes sense because it legitimizes the project and there's a lot of modern background you have to cover up. I talked with a scenic painter once who said they had to paint an entire grass field green in LA back in the 80's to make it look like summer and not winter cause all of it was dead and brown. "eco-friendly" paint, but still. This looks easier and much healthier.
And just when I thought I've seen it all, that sidewalk / leg tweak at 4:58 ... crazy! In most other shots it's background or some details, but here they rebuilt sidewalk and warped the actor's leg to match it... twice! And even knowing it's there, it's still unnoticeable and I could never tell. And all that for, I assume, historical accuracy - aka lack of sidewalk disabled access ramps back in those years? Wow.
Amazing how much research goes into these little details to ensure that the universe of the TV show is much more believable and realistic to the time period and location. Hats off to the production design team 👌
i still dont get what was so important, in adding a few trees, maybe a few garbage packs here and there and a bit of snow or one more car driving by. yea, it looks better, but the viewer wouldnt mind if these details wherent there, so why spend so much money on those effects?
Tom Streller it would look very realistic since these are realistic locations. I understand they felt like something was missing so they added it... I am just surprised the producers allowed budget to be allocated to such a purpose. Like they said " we need 100,000 dollars to add more trees in the background because... Umm... Because back then there were trees... And the grass needs more green..." and the producers where like "you know what? Youre right! It just didnt look 70s enough without these 4 trees next to the prison"
As a VFX Artist who works on Hollywood movies, I'm always shocked at how the simpler the effect, the better it looks! I always thought Christopher Nolan was great at that too. I just put out a video essay showing how he approaches VFX and why they always look so real! (and no, it's not just because he uses practical effects)
I’ve watched all 2seasons and kept wondering how they did 70s so well. The ambience, the cars, the logo of coke and doughnuts, the contrast, architecture. We could do medieval well for sure but 70s VFx? I sense an almost OC attention to detail and have never googled how they dunnit. RU-vid knows what’s on my mind. Can’t wait for season3!
Song please? edit: I mean technically you can download this video to mp3 because the only audio is the song, but if it was on services for 99 cents it'd probably sell some copies.
I was looking for the name of the song. I wasn't finding any solutions because I couldn't remember exactly from wich movie I was very sure I heard it, not the song but actually the harmony, the chords. Until I read your comment. It came like a sign of god. 99 francs is a movie in wich you can hear Lovely Head (Goldfrapp).
things like 2:39 i can get, but things like 2:22? an entire taxi and bridge? for what? i could appreciate the curb ramp edit, until i realized that it was just for a scene of a few seconds, something that was only meant for accuracy with the time setting within the series how much does this highly niche series cost? it's so ironic
I love in that one shot where they added a garbage bag to the pile of debris, lol. David Fincher was like, "this pile of debris isn't quite right, add a trash bag into the corner of the frame."
On one hand I am astonished on the other... when watching this movie I thought "what a beautiful camera work, lighting and locations" - now I know it's all "just" CGI... breathtaking, but CGI... knowing FInsher's work I knew there is some CGI, but not to such extent! the attention to details is staggering - the scene with kerbstones was amazing.
