The challenge to a theoretical physicist pushing beyond our best current theories is that there are too many ways to go. What parts of the existing paradigm do you keep, which do you discard, and why make those choices? Among today’s theorists, Lee Smolin is unusually reflective about what principles should guide us in the construction of new theories. And he is happy to suggest radical revisions to well-established ideas, in areas from the nature of time to the workings of quantum mechanics. We talk about time, the universe, the role of philosophy, a new picture of spacetime, and the future of physics.
Lee Smolin received his Ph.D. in physics from Harvard University. He is currently on the faculty of the Perimeter Institute in Waterloo, Canada, where he was a founding member. Among his awards are the Majorana Prize, the Klopsteg Memorial Award, and the Buchalter Cosmology Prize. He is the author of several books, most recently Einstein’s Unfinished Revolution: The Search for What Lies Beyond the Quantum.

I love Smolin so much, such a humble character and brave enough to own how much heart they put into their work. I’m probably not going to become a fundamental physicist any time soon but I’m glad to see people like Sean and Lee in the field who have the same intrinsic dedication to learning, truth and understanding as I do.

Finally, someone who can actually challenge Sean's Eternalism! I bet most people will think Smolin is just being obscure by citing Charles S. Peirce, but some will be able to understand it: Peirce's semiotics is not limited to Mind, as Sean would have you think, and it changes completely the understanding of Physics and Quantum Mechanics. If you have an opinion about this without having read Peirce, you don't have a good opinion. Do yourself a favor, read it. It'll take time, but most of it is free online. Cheers.

This podcast barely touched on Dr Smolin's bigger ideas so I highly recommend his latest book, "Einstein's Unfinished Revolution - The Search for What Lies Beyond the Quantum". He presents a very ambitious approach to establish a fresh reset of understanding the Universe by starting with a set of 5 principles on which to build upon for modeling and possible new laws of physics in the finals chapters.

Just what I needed! Some new Lee Smolin conversation. My own work is very much in line with his, and I can always use some nudges to think a little more weirdly about my models (which is basically Pascal's triangle with all possible combinations of matter/contraction/stability and energy/expansion/change evolving ever more complex patterns that are each their own timeline branching and recombining in a network of all possible paths through reality.) I've been sick for a while (probably long Covid) and haven't been able to work, so I'm hoping this inspires me to push my malfunctioning brain in the right direction. The Arrow of Energy - "Time taken in stocking energy to build an energy system, adding to it the time taken building the system will always be longer than the entire useful lifetime of the system. No energy system can produce sum useful energy in excess of the total energy put into constructing it. This universal truth applies to all energy systems. Energy, like time, flows from past to future". (Proposed, 2017).

I heard Lee was in favor of decoupling space and time. I am in favor of this approach to quantize time and space. Quantize gravity would be an imbalance because space and time being decoupled would be one to one. So instead of quantizing gravity we should quantize speed. If you quantize speed this is putting space-time on a one to one ratio. Also quantizing speed implies that there is a slower speed that is non-zero they quantum speed. And if you subtract a quantum speed from the speed of light you would be calculating the fastest speed for an object with mass. I call it the virtual speed of light.

What they don't bother to tell you, is that if you for instance examine "Motion" to determine what it is and what it is that is required to make motion possible, you will in almost no time at all discover the Einstein Special Relativity(SR) phenomena, and you will independently derive the SR mathematical equations all on your own, and do so in mere minutes as well. This includes deriving the Lorentz transformation equations. It is so easy to do. I managed to do it even though I am a high school dropout as the result of having a nasty head injury at the age of ten, an injury that ruined my ability to store long term memories up to the normal scale. So, due to the effects of the head injury, my teachers classified me as being the dumbest student in the class over the many years. So you have to understand that even the so called "Dumbest Student", can discover SR and derive the SR equations.

Lee Smolin search for the cryptographic universe. All your thoughts about physics are good and probably correct( based on what I know). As to your question of the main paradigm from which all physics laws emerge i can make a suggestion: All laws i know of are written in forms of 1functions. 2operator theory. 3numbers.. must be computable by a timespace algorithm( always observed to be true,,). So. ..4must be a infinite basis 5spectras in a medium light waves. Number theory is the way hence 5must relate to the way the roots (values, real or complex) of the Riemann Zeta Functions compute. Ie primes and what they mean.(the integrals. Or spectral laws) . The zeta function is a 'suspect ' because computer people know these forms and root functions are eigenvalues of some new Hilbert operators in quantum physics. Figure it out.

"A model is something that can be defined by a small list of rules." Wolfram has conjectured that there exist 4 or 5 simple rules that yield empirically satisfactory approximations to quantum field theory and general relativity theory. Are there 3 fundamental concepts of time: Newtonian time, Einsteinian time, and Wolframian time? I say Milgrom is the Kepler of contemporary cosmology - on the basis of overwhelming empirical evidence. Google "kroupa milgrom". Think about Steven Weinberg's research. Gravitational energy is conserved if and only every graviton has spin 2. However, if gravitational energy were conserved, then Wolfram's cosmological automaton would not have a simple timing mechanism. Consider 2 hypothesis: (1) Dark matter is an effect caused by gravitons that have spin > 2. (2) Dark energy is an effect caused by gravitons that have spin < 2. How do physicists know that the 2 preceding hypotheses are wrong? Google "fredkin milgrom".
