A giant African pouched rat trained to detect landmines in Cambodia has been awarded a gold medal for his “lifesaving bravery and devotion to duty”.
Magawa is known as a Hero Rat and is the most successful rat trained by Belgium-based animal charity APOPO. Since his training, he has discovered 39 landmines and 28 items of unexploded ordnance, clearing over 141,000 square metres of land - equivalent to 20 football pitches.

@Conspiracy Theorist because they need to to survive, thats why they have the diseases as well. In countries where there are stray cats, those cats live in the garbage and give you rabies. Just youtube pet rats, they are cleaner than the typical pet cat.

How do you know he doesn't know it? I think this rat trained very hard for this specific job, he went to school and worked a weekend job at the same time just to put himself through the training course. He then graduated top of his class and trained 2 more years in and out the field. He has 3 daughters and a son who he also provides for. His wife is a cleaner for the local supermarket and she helped him through all the ups and downs until he made it. Now that's he's a big name and making big bucks he's putting his kids through school and helping his community! You don't know this rat, don't act like you know him just because he's famous now.

Not only that they made a medal proportionately small so it looks the right size on the rat if it was a massive medal it would have looked dumb they made a rat sized medal which is attention to detail for you I bet all the rats co workers are jealous now I want to see a rat medal ceremony every year now they mush have rat employee of the month these rats must be on targets whose found the most mines who gets an extra banana to take home for mrs rat and the babies

Because the rat hasn't created peace..? Trump has accomplished something incredible, he has created peace in the Middle East. Why would you nominate this rat for something it hasn't done? It's been rightfully rewarded for being fantastic at its job (though I'm sure it'd appreciate some cheese or something more than a medal). You can't just nominate someone for something they haven't achieved because you don't like the actual nominees. Like Trump or not, try focusing on his achievements rather than his personality. He's done great things for America. The fact that I have to explain this is depressing.

I read somewhere that during WW2 rats were stuffed with explosives as a form of booby trap. So Ratty is now doing community service on behalf of his/ her ancestors. I think I should have got a gold medal for not blowing anyone up.

They actually do! There's literally a retirement 'home' where the rats too old to work are sent, where they are well fed and get to play all day. Hopefully Magawa will meet another good-looking retired rat and live out his golden years in style!

Proof of "devotion to duty" Did Ratty sign a liability disclaimer? With a leash confining him to a minefield, did Ratty have a choice? From a H & S issue, was a risk analysis done? Will another risk analysis be carried out if Ratty wears his heavy metal medal whilst working? If so, will Ratty get additional safety protection, like body armour, eye protection and maybe a parachute? Was Ratty ever free to get drunk and have promiscuous sex? I'm merely deconstructing this notion of 'devotion to duty'

The PDSA should not have been awarded. The PDSA is for animals that lost their lives, the rat is clearly still alive. This is like awarding the George cross or purple heart to someone that goes shopping.

Also several dogs have gotten the reward for way less.like Judy who kept morale up.also several dogs that have gotten it have helped find way less landmines.

Does Ratty know he's being brave? Were there alot of oops and exploding rats before this one got the idea? Were any medals awarded posthumously? If so I would like to pay my respects to any remains (if there are any).

No. The organization has never lost a rat to an explosive. The rats are not terribly long-lived, so they have lost rats to old age (I think 4-6 years is typical). The rats are actually quite safe because they are too light to trigger the mines. They like bananas for a job well done, and when they start to be too old for demining, they go to a reserve for their retirement.
