Yup! I'd like to add to this as well: The mineral in question is carbon. Realistically, coal is a rather impure form of it, meaning it would be very difficult to get diamonds from coal, so this is a bit of an exaggeration by popular media, but it IS the closest option that Minecraft has. It would be easier to get diamonds from graphite, the stuff used to make pencil “lead”, but graphite is not in vanilla Minecraft. (Pencil “lead” is not made of the element lead at all these days.)
