Your mailbox could be a little cabin. When you have mail, a campfire ignites in the chimney to let you know you have mail by the smoke coming out.

Something to consider. At the edges of forests, they tend to have lots of shrubs and smaller trees, on account of the greater amount of sunlight. By making some shrubs on the edge of your forest, it might help visually close off the interior and help to augment that feeling of seclusion.

In an era of MC RU-vid where everyone is trying to one-up each other with the most flashy and large-scale, inspirationless builds, BDubs stands on his own as someone who understands the value of subtlety and the importance of the small details which bring so much more life to the world. 36:30 Etho makes a really great point. There are no dead trees. When he mentions that, you guys were imagining broken over and fallen trees. Like you were trying to imagine how to do a tree at an angle, but you don't have to at all. The most realistic thing you could do is to include a tall and grey "dead" tree or two with no leaves. Trees can stay upright in that form for a very long time in a forrest and they become sustained like that due to wildlife. If you want to do a fallen variation. Create the non-fallen trunk upright with a point of failure at the top, then lie the "rest of it" near it in a way that makes sense. I love the project that your doing. It's ineffably beautiful. Every block choice and every "object" decision, has made sense in a way were you can imagine the HOW it exists and how it could have come to be there. It's like you expressing an expression of life itself. This is why I really liked Etho's point about there being no dead trees and it being too "perfect" because life would be meaningless without that subtle, yet respectful nod/tip of the hat toward death. The fallen trees you currently have with the moss in the new forrest don't follow this theme that you have been working with where EVERY single block and every single thing tells a story of WHAT it is and HOW it got there. TL;dr Basically... you have fallen trees with moss covering them, but there are no broken trees that those "fallen" ones belong to.

Agree 100 million percent. I think there also needs to be Grey tone fallen trees as well, not just mossy ones. Tuff and acacia really do look like real trees, and this forest isn't just a minecraft forest anymore, it really transports you to a REAL feeling forest

That’s the difference between a natural forest, and a maintained tax deductible “tree farm” (not like a Christmas tree farm, just a forest you grow). You take out the sick ones, surveyors come through and mark the trees that need to be removed. You clean up and chip the fallen branches and use some for firewood. Forests are so different across the world, bdubs made a kind of forest that reminds me of the northwest usa and also northern Ontario.

BUILD IDEA for B-dubs: Sound effects in the forest When Gem made her season 9 base she added birds sounds to her base with music discs. There are some great ideas for what kind of structure the mailbox could be, but I figured I'd throw my hat in the ring. I think it would be fun to turn it into a small sugar shack where sap is boiled for syrup. The forest that surrounds my home is similar to this one, and we tap the maples in it at a very small scale, so a sugar shack was the first thing in my head when I imagined a small structure in the forest. I know that your forest is currently a mono-culture of one kind of pine-don't get me wrong, I think that works really well in Minecraft. If you tried to do a bunch of different types of trees, you'd lose the palette and cohesion. Irl, the maples and other deciduous trees in forests like these tend to grow just as tall and slender as the pines to fit within the canopy, so it's not difficult to imagine them among the pines here. If you did want to rationalize it even further, perhaps there were maples, but they've all been cut down due to some kind of disease. That line of reasoning would also explain why the shack has been converted into a "mailbox". Additionally, if you still wanted to add fallen trees and stumps, it would allow you to make them in a different style from the pines so that they are made to work horizontally or at an angle.
@whistlehammock

The hermits did not give you nearly enough credit for how breathtaking this forest is. I adore the way you approached this build and the creek with the waterfall is seriously genius! I don't know how someone can not see it as what it is, this is true, classic painting techniques at its finest. My suggestion, if you're up for a challenge: This is a typical mono culture forest, which sadly is the most common in many areas. It's still beautiful, but it's less diverse. It does makes perfect sense, being closest to "civilisation". If you want to play with even more plant opportunities and variation, try making an old growth forest on the far end of your base. You can really dig into how the plants and animals live in symbiosis then. A few "mother trees" protecting their children and other bushes, flowers and critters from rain and sunshine. Anyway, I trust that whatever you end up building will be stunning as always! Thank you for sharing this.

Just a thought, if you want to add a little bit more movement or life to the forest, the occasional spore blossom hidden high in the trees could simulate all the little things that fall off trees as they age, pine cones and needles, leaves, those little propeller things (if you know you know), etc

Man is Bob Rossifying the server, and I love that for him. Also, BDubs, if you want foxes, you can get tamed ones by breeding wild ones and letting the baby grow up. Tamed ones won't run away from that player, and they might stick around the area if you plant a couple berry bushes here and there for them to eat.

Absolutely loving the stream in the forest! You should maybe try to put some running water underneath so that the sound effect plays. It might help with the immersion and atmosphere! Maybe you could even have some flowing water showing beneath the glass for that slight bit of movement. Or prismarine also has a subtle bit of color animation, could try that too...

Not sure if someone has already said it in the comments, but an idea to add to the immersion: Putting a bit of running water hidden underground, below the bridge or below the river, to add the sound of the running water around the river.

Hi Bdubs! Maybe to add some movement in the waterfall you can use mobs hidden after a block, like a white rabbit, axolotl or chicken maybe? Watching bdubbs build always fascinates me, seeing the random placement of leaves to make his trees look natural in a way that it doesn't even look like blocks/Minecraft. I struggle to build stuff that should look natural because my OCD makes it nearly impossible for me to place blocks randomly. So I would usually follow tutorials because placing something out of pattern based on a tutorial still satisfies my OCD since it's supposed to be that way according to the tutorial if you know what I mean.

The amount of thought you put into framing, silhouettes, composition, contrast, leading the viewer's eye, etc is fantastic. And you clearly know exactly what you're talking about too. I think you could do a really cool blown over tree, with the root ball pulled up out of the ground with rooted dirt, the trunk laid over and fences+leaves to stretch the crown out on the ground. It would also serve to fill in a little bit of the eye level scenery that lets you see straight through the forest from some vantage points

This is the first time I've ever seen a Bdubs viseo and I'm left speechless. The way he is able to practically paint pictures with blocks is magical. Not only that but the way he explains why he does the things makes everything make so much sense and sort of demystifies the whole building (in a good, teaching like way). Things like useing darker and lighter blocks to mimic sunny and shaded areas, varying thickness and height to break things up and stop the brain from seeing things as 1 uniform, repeating set of objects, framing certain views to draw focus and using out of focus areas to trick the brain into seeing something as what you intend rather than just some blocks and the section on how a (relatively) flat and plain area can become so much more interesting when contrasted and emerging from a vastly different area. Also the trees. I've always kinda struggled to see what non log blocks are on custom trees, but with those trap doors, I could instantly recognise the small, little branches. I feel like I've just learned so much about building, and I've had a blast the whole time too.
