Reminds me a little of a server I used to play on 8 years (?) ago. There were 2 places to get resources from. A giant tree thingy (i.e. 50x50 or so wooden column rising into the sky) and a mine thingy (a big block of stone and ores that would reach deep into the floor) and every hour one of the two would be refreshed, the entire server would go there and get a lot of unnecessary resources. Also for some reason PvP was enabled there. Really fun times.

instead of making a ton of sets of armor, you can repair your armour using diamond gems (if diamond armor). put both into an anvil, armor first and then the gem and it will repair the durability
