Metal Detecting Nut, I've been metal detecting for over 40 years. Your tip on listening to the detector sound as you rotate around the target is worth its weight in gold. For a newbie, if the detector indicates a "good" target as your circle around, DIG IT! If not, FORGET IT! But if you want to really learn the finer points of operating your detector, you should dig all targets. As you gain more experience with your detector, you will learn how to interpret the really faint sounds for those deeper finds.
Great info... I also use this technique on a good signal. I turn on the horseshoe all metal and listen for iron. Then i pump the spot of good signal in all metal and if I only hear iron. Then 95% time its iron. But there's that 5% it might not.. just curious what your iron bias was set to back then.
One thing I notice is on the good wheat cent you vdi was jumping from 19 to just about 30! Odd that the equinox does not lock on more...especially when they put the tid numbers so tight on the coins...
What I have found in the 2.5 years of using the equinox is that if I notch out any number, I take the chance of missing jewelry. I know this because friends have been right behind me. I have numbers memorized now. I dig plenty of junk, mostly aluminum, but only an occasional chunk of iron, The iron is easy to find, if you are in doubt, hit the horseshoe, iron almost always is a negative number. Aluminum caps almost always jump, not just 1 number like 19-20, but several numbers like 19-23, nowadays is factory presets, except iron bias, recovery speed
thank you so much for the tip... just bought a 800 2 weeks ago and came to you tube to figure out how to use it because yes... I was digging so many nails. With this video I just watched, hopefully not so much going forward. Awesome video, thank you for taking the time to teach us armatures how the pros do it!!! =0)
Nice info! Lots of missed targets by folks not understanding that notch discrim. I always dig the iffy's and have gotten some sweet finds! Stay safe! GL&HH!
Great information. Just last week I figured out exactly what you are doing. Have you noticed if you dig a nail it is usually on the edge of the plug? Thanks for sharing
thanks there's value in any ones experience always glad to learn something new. I'm new to the nox but I got Andy Sabisch's book and it made getting used to this easier People over think these machines and start playing with the settings before they figure it out . I ran my Deus hf in factory settings for a year before changing things up
though I had some problem with sea water It also ru-vid.comUgkxa-FNYUOM93a388gi9a4brtSCEVmrHgJH land for finding any things very easily. (thought it would work as normal due to it being water proof within certain parts of the detector), on dry land and sand worked well. My first one, so still have lots to learn
Good explanation. What you are describing - the "All the way around" idea - is not particular to the Equinox 800 - it applies to every single metal detector that I've ever used. The reason is the field the object is giving off and the way the machine's signal interacts with that field. Try it as an air test or on the surface. If you swing perpendicular to a nail, it will give you a strong tone. Swing parallel (along the length of the nail) and you'll get nothing. The exception to this rule is a bent nail - especially bent in a 90 degree angle - that will generally give you an "all the way around" signal. The other exception with a good target would be a coin standing straight up and down on edge. You would get a stronger signal one way and a weaker signal in the other direction that might fool you into thinking its iron. But as a general rule, what you've said is true - and if I'm trying to cover a lot of ground, or checking out a new site for the first time, I will rarely dig targets that don't sound consistent as you rotate around them. Cheers!
Have you tried changing Freq from multi to 10? If the numbers stay the same then it’s a coin if the numbers change then iron. Due to weather haven’t had a chance to try this out.
I have found that in my area buttons and civil war bullets ring up 14-16 as well. I dig a ton of nails... but i think i would miss alot if i notched out 14-16.
Nice. I have an 800 coming in a couple days. I have used the SE for over 10 years and this is the technique I use. Happy to hear it’s the same for the Nox.
FYI - this will only work/apply to US coins. Here in Canada many of our coins contain iron and other metals so if you do this you will miss them. Thanks!
Just got me a Nox 800 and love it. Still learning. Outstanding observation when you say you gotta go all around-I found this to be true as well. Given the nox has various modes. Do you think this applies to beaches as well? Appreciate your perspective. Mike
If you run the coin shooter program by andy sabisch then you will get a sound nuance and then you can literally hear if it’s a coin or iron and I’ve dug lots of coins that only put out one way signals specially in trashy and iron infested areas , always dig some iron no matter what though
This comment is 3 years late, but I'm researching why I'm having same problem. The lone star pro from Garrett has identical characteristics. I'm gonna use your experience to help me stay sane and not dig SO MANY IRON NAILS! Thanks for posting this vid 👍
This was really helpful! I swing a 600, and took a tool out of someone else's belt, I will throw it into all metal with the horseshoe if it reads a negative it often ends up being iron as well, or the very least a nail is nestled in there too. The 360 pivot is a great way to really hone in on the target. Thank you!
I detected at Seaside, OR with my 800 and got so many rusty nails. I don't even know how or why they are there. Careful if you walk barefoot out there.
Hi, I have been hunting the same abandoned fairgrounds for over 30 years. It ran for approximately 50-55 years. Mid 1800's to early 1900's . I have used the updated iron bias program. I have several large buildings that caught fire , so I fight nails upon nails. Are you using the f2 update? I couldn't tell if you had your iron disc. on or off. Also are you using field 1 or 2 ? And what are you using for a sweep recovery speed? The method you describe does work. 90 -95% of the time. But in heavy concentrations it will miss things. I grabbed a half dime and a seated dime within 15 minutes of each other where when rotated 90° the signal disappeared, I've also used the 6" on the 800, that is an incredible loop. Also, I have found corroded large cents and IHP will give you a broken signal in a circle sweep . Great informative video , thanks for posting.
I've found coins on edge when only getting a signal one direction ( between the 90° approach, if you spin 180° and get a signal also, it could be coin on edge.)
Not always. I'm sorry but if you use this method you will miss deep coins. When I say deep i mean 10 to 12 inches. 10 to 12 inch coins only sound like a good targets in one direction in my 3 year old test garden. This is on my equinox 800 and my two friends Garrett at pros. I used your method years ago but not anymore. Yes you will dig a lot of nails on some sites but if you don't you will miss deep coins.
The old “turn 90 degrees” test. I’ve been using this method since I got my first explorer in 2005. Just started using the 800 more instead of my SE. I don’t notch anything out. I just turn the volume down on the iron. Good luck out there
Good tip 👍 I’m going to use this method on a site that had homes built in the early 1900’s . I’ve found a few wheaties but not silver yet . And of course there’s lots of nails .
It’s easier than that. Surprised you didn’t look with all metal horseshoe on. You have to hear the iron grunt to be able to eliminate it. If iron is notched out you’ll never hear the DUAL tones of LARGER iron pieces that trick you with non iron tones and ID’s. If the horseshoe is off you’ll NEVER hear the iron grunt to be able to reject it - hence everyone frustrated digging nails.
Thank you! I have 200 hours on my equinox and my prob has boiled down to two things. What disc to run and how to interpret iffy signals. I’ll be damned if you didn’t just 100% confirm what I’m discovering! I feel so much better also what’s the point in running open low # disc in a high trash area where chances are there is little to no gold...I save that for the beach. You have to pick you battles in relation to time and play the game of odds...great video!
You are correct in my opinion as this is exactly what I do for Australian pre- decimal and decimal coins, but like everyone else I still get caught out, but not often
Great tip thank you for sharing it,been detecting for years, have 5 different detectors just bought the equinox 800,I’m really impressed with it,finding a lot of coins need to work on jewelry anymore advice for the equinox?thanks again 😊
Try to raise the Iron biased FE all the way to 8 or 9 and see if it’s going to be better and try with all metal on so you can hear the iron , thank you for the videos my friend.
