It is the best hobby I ever took up. If I didn't have 2-3 hours of driving every time I went it would more than pay for itself. Regardless I would be out on a creek somewhere whether I was prospecting or just sitting quiet watching the world. Thanks for the nice video Chris Vogus!

Ignore the nay-sayers. They're just jealous that thru aren't out doing something interesting. A lot of people ask me the same question when i show them gold i have collected. Where did you get it? They should be asking, "how" instead. Research, practice and just getting out - eventually you're rewarded with a little gold. But that is just frosting on the cake. Nevermind what they say. You are one of the people that inspired me tho get out and get it!

I live in Alaska. We only get about 3 months without snow and 24 hrs of sun. Unless I plan to prospect in the snow in the dark? Lots of different terrain and creeks, and rocky beaches. Looking for mainly gold, and also native artifacts. So with money aside. What do you recommend for an all-around detector with a coil? 6 in sounds nice! How do you like the DD coils? Would like some depth as well. Lots of mountain rock here? Your advice will be honored!. I found a 7.97-gram nug just by chance. Got the fever now. I'm only worried about a bear sneaking up on me at the creek or somewhere.🤠

I had the Gold Monster for six months and passed it on - Never, ever *genuinely* found a piece of gold with that machine - only blind-planted test pieces. Been taking an oldschool (20yo) minelab PI to some of the EXACT (to the foot) locations I'd run the monster over, and I've pulled multiple nuggets in 30 minutes from only an inch under.... And this was ground that was 'quiet' for the monster. Took it up to the rich fields in north qld too and again, nothing - after five solid days detecting over known rich locations. Others around us with GPX's were just yankin' it out. That said, I'm confident that it can find gold - I was digging up lead nuggets smaller than a grain of rice from between 2-4 inches, and found a crapload of pennies, halfpennies, buttons, alfoil and other stuff. It's just not productive enough on small nuggets compared to a PI machine. Our ground is just far too noisy for high-gain VLF. A tip that I found helped detect the smallest pieces (of lead in my case) - run it WAYYYYY SUPER HOT on 'shallow'/discrim mode, and ignore the screen when searching. It will be noisy as all heck with the ferrous tone, so get used to the different tones. When it beeps a nonferrous tone, switch to deep and lower the threshold to a more tolerable level to pinpoint the target. In all I don't recommend the Gold Monster to anyone looking at buying a detector *for prospecting in Australia*. If you're gonna use it on the beach and such too, go ahead - it's a SUPER SUPER SUPER SENSITIVE VLF MACHINE (beats the living CRAP out of a CTX3030). In terms of build quality, useability, included accessories and basically every other factor, the Gold Monster as a product is RIDICULOUSLY GOOD value and quality. But for a prospector, I just can't recommend it. Honestly I thought I was doing something wrong. I just had the wrong equipment all along.
@cockroachman27
@cockroachman27 3 года назад
Hi mate what would you recommend for a first gold detector? I was thinking of this one but now I think I should pay for a pi detector
@orsmplus
@orsmplus 3 года назад
@@cockroachman27 It really depends on what sort of terrain you'll be detecting in, and your strategy. In Australia, a majority of the remaining good gold will be found in remote ground with a high amount of iron (C-QLD, WA). If you're detecting areas with small chunks and low iron (more bushy areas than flat red terrain, like in VIC/golden triangle), then the gold monster will be great - if there's gold remaining there. Areas like central north QLD and WA will fare much better with a PI, as the high level of iron changing frequently in small areas will require frequent ground balancing and low levels of trash. The GM picked up far smaller targets than my heavily modified PI does in victoria, however in QLD the GM is near useless on the iron rich soil. The PI performs beautifully in this case. It comes down to your strategy, budget, dedication and location. If you're doing it purely as a hobby, the GM might very well be perfect for you, but keep in mind every man and their dog can afford a GM, a car, and can get to the easy spots. If you're more dedicated, are willing to go on multi-day 4WD detecting trips to geologically researched & difficult areas, wearing a harness, and spending the time to dig every target, then the PI will be the way to go, as you'll find the targets that the less dedicated prospectors will pass up purely because of time/effort/cost restraints.
@cockroachman27
@cockroachman27 3 года назад
@@orsmplus thanks for the reply. I am in SA and I am very keen to take the 4wd to WA for extended periods in the bush as I have family out that way. I would like it to be more than just a hobby. My friend that I go fossicking with is buying a gold monster so I was thinking of getting a PI for more mineralized stuff. Any recommendations for a PI detector for a novice to buy? I was looking at the SDC but I don't believe the coil can be changed.
@orsmplus
@orsmplus 3 года назад
@@cockroachman27 Great! If you get a PI and your buddy has a gold monster, you'll be ready for any terrain. I don't feel the GPZ offers quite enough performance for price, neither the new gpx6000. I'd probably recommend a GPX4000/4500/5000, with a coil suitable for the terrain. The SDC coil can indeed be changed, but requires a hardware modification to attach it to the shaft ... the SDC however is specifically tuned to the attached coil, and is optimised for small gold. This makes it ideal for places like VIC. The SDC will find much smaller gold than the GPZ (smallest I've found with an SDC was 0.09g about 3 inches deep - but the QLD and SA terrain will typically hold larger chunks. If you can get your hands on a 4500/5000, and get the audio modified or use a gain/compressor box and you'll definitely have a productive machine if you have the time and patience to really learn how it works and how to discern between the threshold murmurs and weak targets. Practice, knowledge, and discipline is the real key to finding the gold others left behind. Understanding how PI works and what your pulse patterns are doing really helps to understand what the ground is telling you.
@cockroachman27

@@orsmplus interesting, I was thinking about getting the sdc but now I'm thinking about a gpx. There is a second hand gpx 4000 at miners den in Adelaide. Would you recommend i get this instead of the sdc? Also what are the differences between the gpx 4000 and gpx 5000? Thanks for your replies it's not often I find someone that knows about about this subject

Why on my gm1000 is ground balancing done by just pressing/holding the center button with the coil held flat to the ground & still? While most i see on here are done the traditional way like yours? Not that im complaining. Its so much easier and faster my way and i think a little more accurate perhaps also. Maybe its just abit newer a model than yours?

Re Getting Out There and Mental Health .... exercise plays a HUGE role in good Mental Health. Even just the hiking will help with things like depression and PTSD. WHO CARES how much gold $ you find. Finding gold is just a simple reason to get out and going. The more important part is Getting Out and Moving. You're not dwelling on those dark thoughts. You're not living those nightmares over and over again. You're out there ACTUALLY LIVING. The dollar figure really doesn't matter when it comes to Mental Health.

My greatest fear is that I find a nugget that's too big and heavy to carry away with me lol !!

How far away from your home (time wise) is your creek (are your creeks)? MY nearest placer spot is 1 1/2 hours - makes "quick trips" tiresome and gas-expensive....

I am in the same situation. Wish I could just ride my bike out to the creek, 3 hours of driving is a pitb.

It's all about getting out there and getting into it just like Andrew says.the gold is just a motivator and an excuse to be there otherwise people would just think your mental for hanging around loving nature without a pan or detector😂🌟🌟👍I've been making a bag of paydirt last ages just so I can pan a little bit out most days and find some colour.It's a great bag also.you might of seen a few videos on it! But if not have a gander.😉✌

Gold prospecting is a way of life!!! I have a creek in my back yard. I never even went to it for 7 years after we bought the 10 acres of land. I had been watching videos of prospectors and decided to go check out my creek. I absolutely love it now! I don't give a damn if I find a bunch of gold or not. I am retired at age 46 so prospecting is just for fun now and always will be! I may go get a few claims out west later but for now i am fine here. If anyone gives you bad comments just ignore the idiots! They have no clue of how fun the prospecting life is! Basically, we all enjoy different things so go do what you like and if it isn't prospecting then go watch the videos of what you like and leave us the heck alone! Some of us don't need money because we already made all we need!! Oh, I just ordered the gold monster 1000!!! Yay for me!! Next I will be buying the gpx5000! For those 2 detectors is $5k. I have already found some gold and I hope Noone else gets in the hobby so I can find it all, haha j/k!

I have a gold monster. A few weeks ago I found a good area to detect I got a few hits dug them up to find bird shot. Walked a little way along and found a pile of spent shotgun shells. I turned around put the gm back in the truck and moved on. I'll go back there with a highbanker next time, as a detector would have Ben a waist of time.

Mate, i spent 2 months and 2 grand on my holiday down there. A cost that would have occurred with or without gold. To find some gold every day i panned and go home with around $400 of gold is a Bonus. Its the finding that counts for me, not the value.

You make interesting and easy to watch offerings, i've never been prospecting, but find the process relaxing and somehow rivetting! Must connect with the curiousity bit of the brain! And ignore if you can the snide and malicious comments about cash values etc etc. Some people know the price of everything and the value of nothing. Do what gives you pleasure, Grizzly has it right, a good stick to chew and some water to splash in. Makes for an untroubled mind. Best Wishes.

I've had some very good luck with the GM10x6 coil, even for coin shooting, it goes deep in mild ground. You can even pick between a $2 and 5c, the $2 has a way mellower sound and the 5c is really zippy. Still coming to grips with the GM 05, haven't used it nearly as much as the 10, but it seen to work for you and LDC and Busted Nuckles so I've tried it out but I've been nowhere near as successful as the GM10. Awesome vid😀🇦🇺

Hey love the channel. Haters gonna hate when your on ground like that. My question is why dont you get a bigger sluce box and mabe an excavator?
@VoGusProspecting
@VoGusProspecting 5 лет назад
The way these mats work and with the type of heavys on this ground I don't need a bigger one. You only need longer if you're running lots of dirt with dense heavys. Excavators are illegal to use without dropping hundreds of thousands into permits.
