CLICK "Show More" for equipment and exposure information:
Printing: For this example I printed using a B&W laser printer. Printing on paper, as opposed to a transparency, is less reliant on how dark the ink is or what your CMYK levels are. I'm sure a B&W print from an inkjet printer would perform equally as well. You'll notice I put my stencils backwards on the t-shirt side so that they read forwards from the squeegee side. See my other videos on how to print CMYK Rich Black Transparencies, and how to make your own screens.
Emulsion: I used Speedball Photo Emulsion and Sensitizer in this example. I store it in my fridge so that it has a longer shelf life. You can find it on Amazon at: amzn.to/3mJvn01 Sensitizer: amzn.to/3nPg5Zb
Mineral Oil: Fragrance in the mineral oil / baby oil does not affect the ink at all. The ingredients listed were Mineral Oil, Fragrance. Usually found in the cosmetics or baby section of most stores. Here's a fragrance free one I recommend: amzn.to/2Jhf0Ku
Exposure: This step is up to you, whether you use a light bulb set up or the sun as your light source. I've used both successfully. Oftentimes after exposure I don't notice a drastic color difference until I get my screen wet. For less than $5.50ea you can purchase a 250 Watt - 120 Volt - Incandescent Photo Flood Lamp on Amazon which is recommended by Diazo: amzn.to/34Hz4xl
Look for their their PDF manual for exposure times and distances
4.bp.blogspot.c...
(keep in mind you still may need to adjust these times for your set up). I place a piece of glass (an old piece of glass from a large picture frame) on top of the stencil prior to exposure.
Rinsing Screen: This may take some time just wet both sides of the stencil with water and keep spraying. Eventually the unexposed stencil portion will soften and wash out. Lukewarm water is best.
Working Light: It's important to not expose your emulsion to UV light before you are ready. You can use LED lights as well as bug lights (lights with a yellow shield around the edge) they work great for handling your photo emulsion prior to exposing it as they emit little to no UV light: amzn.to/2WI4Q8K
Any further questions feel free to ask.

So i had a few questions about the exposure. 1, do you need to lay a glass on top befor you expose it? Like when your using transparency film. 2. Does it have to be covered until i go outside for the sun exposure? If i choose to use my uv light (mine is 50w) do you know how much time and the distance it would be to expose a 14x14 frame? Also i have a 5x5 and 2x2 would those be less time and closer distance? And if i use the sun does the time change for smaller frames? Thanks

So, if I put the emulsion on both sides, let it dry in the sun. Then, I print out on my printer whatever I want to be the printed. I put that on one side, and put baby oil/mineral oil. Let it sit (for how long?), then I put it in the sun again to cure it? What do you use, for ink to put it on a shirt? what side do you use to put the ink onto a shirt? I mean, the emulsion, it gets removed by the baby oil and that's how you get your "print" to screen print off of?

hi this is the method I wanted to learn, so I have a couple of questions, 1) did you prepare the screen with photo emulsion first? 2) do you have to expose it to uv light? sorry I missed that part
@portiamelita1550
@portiamelita1550 3 года назад
this screen already has uncured emulsion on it (the green stuff) you put the oiled paper on then expose to the UV lights to cure the emulsion and make your stencil

Excellent video. Quick question: is rinsing with water enough to get the oil out of the screen? Do you not get oil stains on the shirt when you print? Thank you.
@MemesyShirts
@MemesyShirts 3 года назад
You can rinse with a little dish detergent like dawn to ensure all of the oil is off of the screen.

Great vid + demo! Thank you. Did you use a special type of paper for this or any paper would do as long as it's thin? Onion skin paper? Should the paper be soaking wet with mineral oil or a thin coat of oil would be enough? Again, thank you and hope your printing life is going well. best of luck :)
@MemesyShirts
@MemesyShirts 4 года назад
I used standard printer paper. As you said as long as it's thin it will work well. Avoid thick card-stock paper. I'm fairly liberal with the mineral oil, and try not to worry too much about every air bubble, just get the majority.

i am using cooking oil, and it also works perfect, much cheaper. just wipe the excess oil with clean cloth.

so do you put the oil on the paper on top of the screen? doesn't the oil get into the screen? does that matter?
@MemesyShirts
@MemesyShirts 4 года назад
Yes Correct, put the oil on top of the paper on top of the screen which is coated with emulsion. The oil won't affect the dried emulsion (green stuff). Get the air bubbles out the best that you can, but I've had excellent results even with some air bubbles. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Exposure times can really vary widely, check the blogspot link in description for some general recommendations by Speedball. Using sunlight is always a great alternative and can be much faster.

The exposure process varies from one application to another. Check the info section I explained a little about the exposure process to help you out.

So when did you put the emulsion on? Before?
@Dr.Stein99
@Dr.Stein99 5 лет назад
@@robotswontwe9991 i get it now. They print laser print out. Then lay that on the glass. The silkscreen is already prepped with emulsion. The oil makes the paper translucent enough to make a contrast between the toner mask. You will have to play fun games with many tries to nail down what combination of light and time, to bake a good print.

Hello sir may i ask, what process did you use on exposure? is it sun or bulb light thanks
@MemesyShirts

In this instance I used sun exposure. Sun exposure occurs very rapidly oftentimes in less than a minute.

@@MemesyShirts thanks memesy, hmmm what if i already did emulsion on exposure box using acetate but nothings happen can i re coat emulsion to my screen and do the oil process with sunlight exposure without removing the old coating of emulsion even though its already exposed to exposure box... (exposure box halogen 500watts)
@MemesyShirts
@MemesyShirts 5 лет назад
What type of photo emulsion are you using? I use the Speedball + Speedball Sensitizer. I find it to be a great option for hobbyists as it is easier to use. The link for what I use is in the video description. With that said, I would guess that your emulsion has to be removed and reapplied as it has already been exposed. Also, sometimes you don't see much color contrast after exposure until you get the emulsion wet. If your screen was exposed, the uncovered emulsion won't wash out. If nothing is washing out of the screen then it is over-exposed so I would check: 1. Your emulsion type 2. Make sure you're using safe lights when coating/drying your emulsion 3. make sure light does not get under your screen when exposing as this can expose the underside of the emulsion.

My question is will this work with ink scape or do you have to have an expensive software?
@MemesyShirts
@MemesyShirts 3 года назад
Using the mineral oil technique as opposed to a waterproof transparency, the opacity of the ink matters much less so I see no issue using free software such as inkscape or gimp to create your artwork.

Be sure to check out the "More Info" section below my video. "For less than $3 you can purchase a 250 Watt - 120 Volt - Incandescent Photo Flood Lamp on Amazon which is recommended by Diazo." I hope this helps. I would recommend trying direct sunlight if you don't have the proper bulb. I find that sunlight works best for me as well.

As Charlie said, sunlight is very fast. Usually works in less than a minute. A bulb on the other hand can take quite a bit more time and will vary depending on your set-up. If you have the option of using the sun I'd say go for it.
