I lost 1/3 of my beautiful Ming by keeping the soil too dry after I repotted it. I thought the same thing you did about the leaves turning yellow, I thought it was overwatered. Yep, that was wrong! You answered my questions. Thanks for making this video!!

Im glad that answered your question and I hope your Ming comes back! I've lost more plants than id like to admit to incorrectly watering them lol.

My Mings are about 30 years old. They started growing very tall (about 8-10 feet)over the past year. Any recommendations how to prune them so they will not reach the ceiling?

@@megannicole2180 hello :-) sadly I don’t remember :-( it started to brown and as an instinct I watered it more and ended up over watering it to pretty much death unknowingly😭 I think I should have made the pot drainable (rookie I know) and yeah, in winter months low amounts of water I would say!

Hi, I have one of these, love it but remains to challenge me. Since I moved it to a Lechua pot with the pon it seems to have struggled in the last year. Granted I had to deal with the spider mites. Does this plant to prefer to be constantly moist, which the Lechua pot and pon does or does it prefer to dry out in between watering? It is in direct light. Thanks

Hi, thanks so much for the info. Love this plant also but it’s been a challenge. I know what you mean about the leaves dropping. In recent weeks it’s been even more dropping. I’m in lower Scandinavia. Some recent variables and events. I repotted to a Lechua self watering pot with Lechua pon at the bottom. Spider mites have been a constant battle. Recently been using a neem oil product and the amount of web has recently increased. Before I was using a chemical spray. At the beginning of the summer it was warm here and it was in a north facing room, though away from the window. So I placed it in the south face room however temperatures did drop to just above 10° outside and daytime is sub 20° Celsius, and no heating in the apartment at the moment. I’m worried as it’s quite stressed. Is it the repotting shock? Too hot, too cold? Spider mites? Room positioning? Noted about the yellowing leaves under watering factor and drafts! I have crispy leaves! Any other tips appreciated. Thanks.

yesterday I came back with a beautiful Ming Aralia and now I am so nervous so any help on how to take care of it? this is my first houseplant I am totally a beginner and I don't want it to die!
@LeafMeAlonePlants
@LeafMeAlonePlants 4 года назад
Hey first of all you got this! The great thing about Mings are they are super chill to take care of. My top 2 tips to keep this guy happy are dont let the soil dry out completely (you will start to notice leaves turn yellow or possibly crispy. And second try to avoid harsh direct light for too long it can burn the leaves. Otherwise give it bright indirect light and water when the soil is dry and youll be golden! Welcome to the wonderful world of houseplants!

@@LeafMeAlonePlants thank you so much! what happens when one over waters them? on their leaves, I am noticing some yellow edges and I think I over-watered it the day before is it related to the over-watering or maybe another reason? again thanks for replying 🤗🤗🌸 I named her Coraline!
@LeafMeAlonePlants
@LeafMeAlonePlants 4 года назад
@@keyo3945 Well I am a chronic underwater so I can't say from experience but the yellowing edges could be from overwatering for sure. The hard thing about these plants is they also present yellow leaves when underwatered lol 🙄 One other possible reason I can think of is if you have a lot of chemicals in your water or recently did a round of fertilizing it may have been a bit much and will present that way too. I hope its been going well with Coraline, what a cute name 😍😍😍

@LawyerPanda
@LawyerPanda 3 года назад
I bought one a few weeks ago. The guy at the nursery said they don't require much watering, in fact he hadn't watered mine in a while becausethe soil was bone dry. Despite that, it looked super healthy. After I brought it home it was good until a week after when I decided to water it. I tend to bottom water my plants, and then let the water drain out before placing it back in it's cache pot. Since watering it, it's dropped a lot. This is one plant I don't want to kill bc it's so expensive. 😞

Oh no, I hope this guy is hanging in there! My Aralias have thrown fits from underwatering (I do tend to push it pretty far) however they have never seemed to have a poor response to watering (although I top water) One thing I have noticed though is if I try and put them in a new location they also decline I am wondering if this could have been a factor🤔

Hi. Enjoyed the video, but I have a question. I inherited a Ming that is super leggy - six feet tall leggy, along with a few 3 feet branches. I want to lower this, and have it branch out, but how ruthless can I be, and can I root the large tall piece? or start, as you said, with a smaller, more tender piece. Thanks for your help.
@OceanEsthers
@OceanEsthers Год назад
I have a small ming indoors that was about 2 ft tall with one branch being taller than the rest. I cut off the tallest branch with sanitized scissors to about half its size. Within a week it started leafing out. I will say that I also added some of those fertilizer sticks for indoor plants as well.

Im sorry to hear your guy isnt doing well 😥Its always a little hard to diagnose plants without being there in person. However, one thing I have noticed my ming is super sensitive to is changing locations. I recently moved mine and it threw a huge temper tantrum and dropped a ton of leaves. If everything seems right and you cant figure it out, I usually suggest taking alook at the roots to see how they look I wish I could help a little more, I hope this guy comes back fro you!

what type of soil?
@kmowiu
@kmowiu 3 года назад
So what about a fan that isn't blowing directly on it? We run a fan at night and as a result it does blow some air on it. Could that adversely affect the ming?
@LeafMeAlonePlants
@LeafMeAlonePlants 3 года назад
So I find my ming personally throws little temper tantrum anytime I change its environment (I moved it to a new spot a few months ago) and... it did not like it lol. I could see the fan having a similar effect also I could see it drying out the air. Really I guess it comes down to if you are set on the location of both the plant and fan, if now I would try moving one of them elsewhere!

Hi, Why do the wooden branches on my ming aralia are getting black?
@LeafMeAlonePlants
@LeafMeAlonePlants 2 года назад
Hey so what is very normal is when they cut these tips in nurseries for shaping they put a horticultural paint on the top of the stems to seal them, if they feel normal and its not somthing thats forming itself thats probably what you are looking at. On the otherhand if the tips are forming on their own and the stems feel squishy it could be a rot problem
@ilikerealmaplesyrup
@ilikerealmaplesyrup 4 года назад
hmm. I just watched another guy on youtube talk about how he was keeping it moist and it started to turn yellow. Then he started to neglect it and it thrived. He said to water it when the soil was dry and then just let it dry out complete again.
@LeafMeAlonePlants
@LeafMeAlonePlants 4 года назад
I think everyones plants will react slightly differently especially depending on the location you have it temp, light etc.. For me personally mine will get some yellow leaves if it is too dry (which was really counter intuitive at first) I dont let this guy get super soggy but for me a good even moisture makes mine happy, perhaps that compensates for my Arizona heat and low humidity though!
@marko7552
@marko7552 3 года назад
it depends on temperature, soil, drainage, lighting, etc, so you should get to know it and pay attention to how it reacts to watering and such, good luck!

@LeafMeAlonePlants
@LeafMeAlonePlants 3 года назад
@@investingchef7999 depending on the size of your pot and tepmrature / sun exposure it will vary but that should be good I like to see a little water rub out the bottom but that’s just me. As for misting my leaves, it’s really preference it will increase the local humidity for a few hours you can also opt to run a humidifier or set it on or near a pebble tray. I hope it goes well for you 🥰🪴
