Gave this a first listen last week. Initially I was concerned over the audio quality, but the appreciation of the significance of the recording, and the formulation of tracks for "Oh Yeah" more than outweigh any trepidation. Don't be put off by the lack of audiophile sound but treasure this box set for the revelation that it is.

Great video as always! I got my copy last week and haven’t the chance to listen to it, no audiophile expectations, just a big Mingus fan like you. I’ve been always fascinated with his artwork and character, and I agree with/ Helen, true art isn’t meant for the masses to be pleased. I was waiting for you to review the box set, and very glad you did it, spot on!

I'm sure this is a cool, historic document. I'm a Mingus fan from afar so this is probably too much Mingus for my listening practices. I would be interested in a single or even double album from this overall set. It reminds me of the Lee Morgan live from the Lighthouse box set from Blue Note a few years ago. I really like and enjoy listening to the 2x LP set I've had for a while that I picked up for about $20 long ago but never really wanted the 12x LP set. I don't have the space anymore for simply storing records for the sake of for collecting.

Thanks for the review and the good assessment of the sound quality. I have the BAT release of this material Charles Mingus at Birdland: The Complete Sessions. It sounds pretty darn good to my ear, with presence and an easy ability to dig deep into the key soloists. It's a tape of a broadcast; I'd love to have confirmed whether this is the same source tape as the BAT release (I assume it is).

Thank you for putting things into perspective for me. I preordered this when the news broke. On the first listen, while I loved the music (as always with Mingus) I thought, as you mentioned, the audio quality is not that really high. But listening to you talking about the date and history and everything makes the listening a much better experience. A question for you: Do you have "Jazz in Detroit / Strata Concert Gallery / 46 Selden" in your collection? If yes, I am wondering how the sound quality compares to this box set. It is a 5LP box set that has not been professionally recorded as well. It is not from a radio broadcast but reading about it tells me that the placement of the mics or other things were a bit off.

I know this will be sacrilege to you, but don’t like most Mingus, I have OH Yeah and a few others and can’t get to the end of any of them. Sorry I am not worthy 🫣
