Original pressings make up 95% of my collection, but I've been getting into audiophile reissues lately, and so will cover a mix of topics ranging from comparisons, reviews, top 10 lists, musings about the hobby, and preorder announcements.
Thanks for video. I was just looking at a listing for the new Jack White album and sure enough it's in "excellent shape". Even more to your point - the vinyl is "white". It is not white.
As someone who regularly sells records online, yes. Especially if they’re not sealed, there needs to not only be description, but adequate photographs. Especially if you’re charging more than $20 for something. As a buyer, I’ve had the experience of buying vintage records, from reputable sellers, that were far from the grading listed in the description, and only two photographs, with only half the record visible.
I told AI to write me a comment in reply to this video and it said "Fascinating video! It's impressive to see how AI is transforming the way eBay descriptions are generated. The potential for more accurate and engaging product listings is huge. Can’t wait to see how this technology evolves and improves the shopping experience!"
OMG! AI totally nailed your authorial voice! You’ll never have to write another album review again. Haha. Seriously though, thank you for the heads up and (adding to the) reassuring proof that wordsmiths of all styles and genres have a while longer. The second part of your video was especially revealing. I’m using AI quite often in the hope that it will save me time in the research process, but in 9 out of 10 cases I have to realize that that the current models remain, it seems, in their infancy; the data they provide is the opposite of what eBay and co. claim it to be: “More Accurate.” In my current experience, even if eBay sellers would feed all the word-perfect, precise and flawless data in their listing process, or if it would be extracted from somewhere else, say Wikipedia, the AI generated outcome would still be loose and inaccurate. And to be fair, as you also pointed out, the vast majority of sellers do not only use stock images but usually grade with “VG to VG+++” which basically means they haven’t even looked at the record let alone play-grade it or anything like that. At least that’s common practice for most sellers here in Germany, while the exceptions are truly exceptional and the reason for me still using eBay occasionally.
I have noticed that too and my feeling is that if you’re that lazy to use an AI description I will not bother with you as a seller. It’s not that hard to write a succinct description that gives prospective buyers the info they need to know in determining whether to bid on or buy your record; and the beauty is that once you do it, you can adapt that description to all other listings.
I literally ran and pre ordered the Miles set. Will finish the video to decide on the Roy Hargrove….but I’ll likely order that as well…..it’s a sickness I tell you.

Listening to you I was keen to get the album and yes it's available at the price you mentioned less the discount but.........they want to charge me $39 shipping to Australia! That would have to be the most expensive shipping rate from any record label I buy from in the USA or Europe. If Resonance are serious about expanding their sales they need to review their overseas shipping rates.
Chris, thanks so much for this video! I listened on Bandcamp and immediately got pulled in on how excellent the music sounded and placed on order on the Resonance Records website. What a great deal with TENOFF factoring in as well. I’m always looking for discounts on vinyl. ❤
I think we have come to the point where a lot of recordings from RSD looses value from retail price, and there's benefit in a lot of cases to wait til after record release as you can probably get it cheaper. I buy Blue Note records from there site and buy when on sale and free shipping; haven't been disappointed yet. Also, thanks for Best Buy Miles mistake, I ordered it, we will see what happens.
I’m a big fan of Roy, since the release of his masterpiece Havana in late 90’s. We were lucky to see him perform at the MIM in 2017. I do have the RSD release as I collect all of Roy’s work that I find on vinyl. A great review, glad you cover such a great artist. I highly recommend this album.

Thanks for covering this album, it's truly sublime. How this wasn't released back in the day is astonishing. I love Bernie Maupin's playing on this album (I've always been a fan of his). Maybe you should start a feature about albums that were deemed 'not worthy of release'' at the time, but now have now climbed to very near the top of that musician's output.
One thing to note, if you are a completest (like me)... one of biggest omission from this set was the nine tracks recorded during two Lionel Hampton sessions, for Victor, from May and July 1940. Those feature the King Cole Trio along with Hampton on piano duet,. vibes, or drums and/or Al Spieldock on drums (on "Central Avenue Breakdown"). Helen Forrest is a vocalist on two tracks. With that said, I can not think of anything else from this period that this is missing. I had bought the CD set back in 2019 and I now own the vinyl box, numbered 59. A must own...

Hey, Hope you are well. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do a review on one the most underrated session recordings in the great Lee Morgan catalogue. Take Twelve 1962 is an album I go back to so often. Recorded in 18 hours, this album has it all and unusually for Lee Morgan-not recorded at Van Geldar's studio. This album helped put L.M back on track even though he ended up with a year in rehab. An album well worth re-visiting for jazz fans. Progressive, swing, it has it all and with a stellar support cast. Great work on all your reviews by the way,. Very much appreciated.
great review! i only happened upon this album for the first time a month ago while digging through the Stanley Cowell discography and reeeally enjoyed it. looking forward to adding this Tone Poet to my collection
Chris, thanks for your video about Jazz music. In my opinion, the managers of Blue Not are not very smart. A lot of Tone Poet are very mediocre albums. The Blue Note label has excellent Jazz albums, the best of the Jazz history. However, I don't understand. One example: they edit a monument of Jazz like "Extensions" by McCoy Tyner without photos, not gatefold edition. I didn't buy it. It's a pitty. They don't make "repress" to Europe so. Insightful review, as always! Re the cover, the CD edition actually flipped the photo. We reverted back to the original orientation of that photo. If you compare the two, you can see the slightly unnatural-looking position of Hutcherson on the CD version. Also, you are correct that there are no session photos, hence no gatefold jacket.
This one was almost a bit too far for me. I really appreciated your perspective on where this album and the artists are/were stylistically. And I am definitely going to give this album another listen or two in an attempt to better connect with what Bobby and crew were attempting to convey. All that said, the sound quality of this release as well as Taru is superb.

All the tone poet records I have sound amazing. The covers are are done so well they are pieces of art. These Tone Poets prove the UHQR records are way over priced. Unless you want to pay a extra $100 for a box nobody wants.
Benson has been rather spectacular for much of his long career. And he has a beautiful voice so even though pop music is not my bag, I don’t begrudge him chart and concert success as a mainstream artist raking in the kind of dough straight-ahead players rarely see.
Not at all, it’s fantastic that musicians like Benson, Montgomery and others were able to translate their abilities into something that actually provided a stable career. So many others were cheated out of it by labels, managers, and lawyers.
