Today we are starting a new chain driven 4WD project. In this video we get everything laid out and start working on building the frame. we get the front A-arms built and tacked into place and also decide where the seats are going to go.

Awesome work Chris! Your fabrication skills have come a ways in the last couple years, I can see you building full size rock crawlers/ bouncers in the future. I think you need a bigger shop with more room for more equipment and once that happens there’s no stopping you bud. Keep it up, I look forward to your videos every Sunday,I wish they were longer and you showed more in-depth in what you do but no complaints here. Merry Christmas to you and you family. Steve.

4:41 treat yourself to a band sander. One akin to the ones used by people who make knives. Seriously, it's a game changer for any fab shop. Various belts + wheel diameters free the world for you. Much better than having to hold the parts with one hand then awkwardly dancing around not grinding into your fingers with the angle grinder. It's worth it. And, because it's small, you can fit it inside your shop in the corner where you won't feel it's taking away space.

Put the shock mounts on the lower bars so the shocks do not have to stick up so high. Put them out far enough so they will not interfere with the engine placement.

First off....I get addicted watching your work. So, good job. It seems the last post I made was taken by other posters as too critical, but I pretty much like to make comments when you ask. On this one, I kind of seeing this project having a lot of nice thought out work, but some micro decisions are what I personally would not do. A few itemized comments/notes. 1. Brake disc size: That is way too small for the weight of the vehicle and the speeds you may get up to IMO. If you want to stick with smaller, think about having 2 discs side by side with 2 calipers instead of just one. 2. Relying on chain drive as part of the braking system. If a chain breaks by hitting a rock, your brakes are compromised. 3. Plasma cutter is pretty awesome. 4. I would prefer to have alignment control for the rear tires. Ironically, your chain tensioner that is independent for each wheel has the potential of changing the tracking of the back end. You might want to move the tensioner to the jack shaft on future setups. Having the jack shaft out of align by a 1/4" is not too bad if needed. 5. Seats are way cool. Nice work so far. Thanks for the program.

You need to raise your seats. You always build your machines with your legs pretty much flat almost like you're laying down. Think of how you sit in a truck or car. Upright with your legs bent at the knees. You should replicate this with your buggys because if you have a hard impact or crash all that forced is going straight through your legs. RZRs trophy trucks crawlers bouncers they all have a proper seat height and I really think you should consider this. Also should consider a proper suspension bucket seat like you'd see in offroad trucks. PRP master craft McNeil are some good brands to consider. Safer and more support for high impact offroading

Hey, you will have a pretty major binding effect in your chain drive due to the independent suspension and your drive point, Because your drive is forward of the axle centerline you will introduce a lever effect that will add gear multiplication as the suspension travels from the sprung or stationary position. Seat mounts should be tubing as well, the flat bar will just bend due to about one-tenth of the strength of the tubing and has more weight as well. Take care.

I suggested in the last video and I'll say it again, you should do a lower side rail then have jeep style lift off doors so you can decide to run the doors or not then you can run net doors for weight savings or hot days.... You could also do a door that swings down so you have even more room to get in.

I like the idea of the larger disc brake! I really think you could install it on its own jackshaft raised from the existing jackshaft (behind your shoulder-seat area) with sprockets to provide the benefit of added ground clearance, serviceability, and extra braking.

Like some of the other dudes here have mentioned, your design and fabrication skills are really coming together. Great Job. That being said, I'm not in love with the jack shaft and chain drive. It will be interesting to see how well the long chains hold up on this build. It seems that a fixed ring and pinion in the front and rear and a shaft between would be better, but years have taught me that there is more than one way to do something right and this is your creation. Being a machinist for years and a bit neurodivergent, it does bug me to see (in this video and the last) your dial calipers partially open on the same table that you are grinding on... they don't like that. 😁 Anyway, carry on and have a great time building cool shit with your hands. I'm in Washington State, so if you would like my box of drawings of cool tube chassis and suspensions, it'd be cool to meet and share them with you. Some of the drawings are to scale on graph paper and others were just sketched ideas. All of them were my creative outlet for the last 30 years.... and I even built a few. Dave

You might consider making it as if no doors, then adding verticals from the bottom rail to the roof, at the front edge. Add a vertical about at your shoulder, from the bottom to the roof, and making your door horizontals match the frame. That would make a nice door, that would also support the frame. You could even add diagonals for additional frame, latch, and hinge support.

Love the channel, your lathe work makes me want to get one, I do have 1 point I would like to make, Having you brake (inboard) where you have it, does increase your braking force, but IF you brake a chain or a chain pops off, you will have NO brakes or at best only 1 wheel braking only. I am a fan of a solid axle but awe at the flex you get from your design. cases like this I choose dependability and simplicity over function. Keep up the good work, I hope my channel continues to grow like yours. Happy New Year.

Merry xmas. Maybe an idea: side frame about halfway where you planned it, but a hinged secondary one (with stopperplates) about where you planned it original. It adds the protection of the frame, and adds a bit more but is as convenient as a door without ruining the look. Plus later on a skin can be added..

love your videos! just some random thoughts, I'd find a way to add disk breaks to each rear tire next to the sprocket. just in case anything fails, jack or chain stress. for doors, I'd do a jeep style just so you have some protection but no obstructions in case of rollovers. Regardless of what i think, i'm excited to see this one finished.

@JoelArseneaultYouTube Год назад
Awesome stuff !! I personally wouldn't add doors as it is going to add considerable weight and also make it more difficult to make it strong and rigid. The door can't really be a structural part of the chassis, so you're going to have a large opening where there's no support. It would totally make it easier to get in and out, but if you put some thought into how you get in and out of the vehicle, I'm sure you can place an opening in the cage / frame and put some well placed grab bars so that you can more naturally slide in and out. Either way it's going to be awesome, but that's my thoughts.

Merry Christmas to you! Definitely doors, even just small and triangulated down to a short rocker that you could brace out to support the frame. Ideas to spitball... instead of chain sliders on the trailing arms you could fab up vertically traveling idler sprockets. They could be adjustable to fine tune chain tension, and if spring loaded they would keep chain tension under any flex in the arm. Might also be cool to use expanded metal for the floor pan with a thin floor mat. Easier to clean out and lighter weight. Sorry I can't be a patron right now, but I hope my ten cents helps the thought processes. Thank you for all your content!
