This is how to replace Mini Cooper S brake rotors and pads. BuyAutoParts sent some nice drilled and slotted rotors. This brake job is done on a 2004 MINI Cooper (01-06 1st Gen R53). For most cars, the disk brake job is the same general procedure.

Why you skip the step of caliper bracket?

I just did a brake pad just pads replacement for my 2002 mini. Just got it. Absolute nightmare I had all the right tools I was ready knew exactly what to do. The 7mm hex on the pin was stripped on front “ nightmare “ then on the rear pins were fine but the piston wouldn’t screw in and I had the proper tool bent the hell out of the little push through bar cause it wouldn’t rotate. So took 3 days and a lot of headache. You made it look easy. And when you started to twist the piston with the needle nose I freaked out thinking I could have done it that way but U stopped. Did it ruin the piston cause u didn’t rotate it? Lmk

The torx is a T50 for info.

Not for that year, T47

@@kenw6691 My late 2004 took a T50 and that was based on Pelican parts I checked beforehand. I'd go for the largest you can comfortably fit, as they can be a right bugger to get off.

At 5:35 into the video you struggle with resetting the caliper piston to accept the new pads. You really should use a "WIND BACK" tool to do this. You cannot simply compress the piston as the handbrake winds the piston to a position as a automatic adjuster. So you need to wind the piston back. I use the Motivx Tools 18 Piece Brake Caliper Wind Back Tool set from Amazon as none of the loaner sets in town had the BMW size disk, that's why the pin tool you had was modded by the prior owner.

@@TomWoodwardLooksmarvlus Hey, about to do the replacement myself soon and was wondering if you know what size brake caliper wind back tool I need as not every universal one has the BMW size disk. I own a R50 06 as well. Thanks in advance!

@@ikenjiro I bought a kit like this from Amazon, it's about 1/3 of the cost of the single tool from MINI Mania, plus I can handle just about any car out there . The adapter for our car is the M adapter. www.amazon.com/dp/B0122Q83T4/ref=psdc_15707281_t1_B015UJV9R8

Awesome man! Wow, surprised you didn’t need an impact drill for the torx screw.

lol mine is t50, and my service manual shows t50 as well. Where do you even find a T47 bit?!! Edit: as per the comments down below: The discrepancy is year/model based, but I run an 04 cooper S r53, and thats whats in the video. So... who knows.

at what torque you did for the front ?

thanks for your video. If you don't care about the sensors/cables, How you turn the brakes lights off the dashboard. Pulling the battery out and reset is not working sometimes. If parts are all grease but you still spray them, how long it took to dry? do have to spray them 1 day before the work? It's cold now. Again thanks so much,
@aDIYCarGuy
@aDIYCarGuy 6 лет назад
I didn't realize at the time, there are only 2 sensors....one one the front left and one on the rear right wheel. I didn't remove them. My light was on for a while but went away by itself eventually. I don't really let the parts dry, I let the pad treatment get tacky for a few minutes and then put them on. The slide pin grease and rotor spray does not dry.

Noob question, when completing brake jobs, when exactly do you need to bleed the system? Is it only if you remove the calipers(for refurb) or when you change brake lines? Thanks and great video.
@aDIYCarGuy
@aDIYCarGuy 6 лет назад
Yes and also if the pedal feels spongy bleeding might help, or if the fluid is replaced for general maintenance or whatever reason. Any time air might be in the system, it needs to be bled. Thanks!
@Krizzleswg

Thanks for taking the time to respond. Have you done a video on how to bleed a brake system yet? Ideally aimed at a no confidence with cars currently noob but willing to learn!
@aDIYCarGuy

No problem! Sorry I haven't done a video like that. My videos are more vehicle-specific; a lot of the bigger car youtubers have done all the super general/universal repair videos, but I would like to do a few for fun some day.
