I had the joy of spending the past weekend with the SiS version eBox, having FPU and MMX, so it ran Windows 2000 like a dream - but drivers was a big problem. Only working good on XP and no sound support in DOS for the SiS 7019 AC'97....

Nice upgrade. I'm glad there's an FPU-equipped variant, a lot of people forget that the Build engine used the FPU too. The only exception are the games running on the earlier version of the engine that didn't use slopes, like PowerSlave/Exhumed.

I remember seeing the OG VorteX86 back when it was new, and I thought how cool it would be to make a DOS gaming system from it. Glad someone finally has.

Well, the original Vortex86 was based on Rise cpu core and SoC architecturem licenced by SiS and DMP. Vortex86 SX is actually a different CPU created by RDC Semiconductor, hence the big difference in perf/clock

"I imagine the reason for this is power consumption" Maybe part of it, but it might be bottlenecks and/or architecture differences. a cycle for a Pentium or Pentium 2 would not equal a cycle for a cycle for a 486 so if the computational efficiency per cycle is essentially double or triple then you would have 900Mhz 486 = 300 Mhz Pentium II or whatever.

Nice stuff. How much do those PC104 boards cost? The crystal chip is okay but has a somewhat inaccurate OPL3 implementation. Does the onboard video card run demos like Second Reality and Crystal Dream 2 without issues?

I didn't know about UTSource but since we talked about the ESS Solo-1 in the other comment section I looked it up. And they do have the chip there still! ES1938S . If it is compatible with these boards the same way it is with the VIA motherboards and TDMA works on them then you would get excellent sound blaster and especially adlib compatibility. It would sound very close to an OPL3 and in some games it can sound better. Might be a great fallback if you have a board that won't accept these ISA chips. If you ever make a retro PC like this for the 98 era, another good PCI one could be the YMF744B-R which also has some native DOS compatibility with a TSR (Not as good as the ESS Solo-1) but inside windows it would have fantastic wavetable midi synth with Yamaha XG support. A3D, and EAX support. And it has a native OPL3 built in.

You can buy them new from ICOP or one of its distributors. I recommend a PC/104 board with a Vortex86DX processor, the SX is a bit underpowered

The pinout is in the manual of my PC104 board, can just compare it to the pinout of a regular RJ45 connector Edit: although now I think back, I actually just copied the pinout from the original cable that came with the board

@@TheRasteri Ah ok so it doesn't need to be a very impedance high value then. PCBWay were complaining about it so I thought I'd ask since I didn't find any hits on the part number in the photos. Digikey apparently does 0R @ 100MHz, that should probably be fine. Thanks for that

@@petervarga3898 Hey man sorry for the delay, I replied but I think my reply got killed because I posted a google drive link to my BOM. The BOM included in the link only had four items flagged and two of them were because they were out of stock. The eight electrolytic caps I found on CPC since Digikey don't do them in 5mm. The sound chip they accepted a UTSource link and the rest had alternatives on Digikey
