@shootzeglass AOW is only 5 dollars if made by the manufacturer in an AOW platform. If you decide to change your weapons classification into an SBR or AOW then yes it is $200, lots of paperwork, ok from your local Sherrif or local police department, and a long wait time. I have a draco as well and looked into what I needed to do to put a colapsing VFG on my AK pistol.
It is called an AOW (any other weapon) and no this does not fall under any regulation as of yet. It is a angled foregrip not a vertical grip, this has been discussed on many forums and youtube videos. You can see the photo copied letter from ATF on The High Road website.
I liked it, but didn't like the wood hand guard and seeing that there is no after markets parts yet, I was thinking the regular Draco pistol would be better, but seeing that you can modify the quad rail to fit it, I'm now reconsidering. All I can say is great mod man great mod, hands down.
@shootzeglass Correction: If your purchase an SBR or AOW then yes its only $5 but if you decide to take an AK pistol for example and put a VFG (not AFG) and your changing the classification on the weapon than yes its $200, lots of paper work, an ok from your local Sherriff, and a long wait time. I know because I wanted to put my folding VFG on my non mini Draco AK47 pistol and got all the info from the ATF.
If you purchase an SBR it is still a $200 tax stamp. AOW is only a $5 tax stamp as long as you purchase it that way. If you want to add the VFG "manufacture it yourself" then you pay $200.
It is not considered an aow or a sbr because it is an angled foregrip not a verticle foregrip as specified. That discussion has been beat to death and resolved through a letter from the ATF stating such. Handguards are made from a fullsize ak handguard, measure cut and then grind out the inside to fit...not hard to do. May have to drill a couple of new holes.
No issues with the AFG2 with heat, I also use the rubber rail covers with the AFG2 and since you are mainly handling the grip the covers are easier to deal with.
Thanx man, I did not like the hotdog bun handguard either. I shaved it down, changed the color and even added some rails to it. But no matter how hard you try to dress up a terd it is still a terd. But I could see the potential in this weapon, so went out on a limb and bought some ak handguards and was surprised it did not take long to mod them. Great weapon and when I get the folding stock look out this thing is lethal.
You mean the AFG2 does not make it an SBR because it is not considered a vertical grip. Putting a vertical grip would make it a short barreled rifle and that's a $200 ATF tax stamp plus NFA registration. AOW tax stamps are only $5.
@Derailed420stfu Does the muzzle nut screw right off or is it welded on there? My mini is coming this week and im already lining up projects for it when it arrives.
I really cant wait to see what that beast looks like with a stock on it. Its pretty stupid that theres laws just to get a freakin stock and fore grip on it. Over all its going on my "possibly get for christmas list"
I just swapped out 3 of my vertical grips for the magpul as well. I wish I would have done it sooner . I found a deal for 19 and change on ebay vs the 36 that they were charging everywhere else which made the deal that much sweeter. I'm thinking of installing a Tapco G2 double hook on my mini. I'm pretty sure it will be able to go in with a little dremeling. Any thoughts on this?
Magpul AFG is not a vertical fore grip. It is an AFG angled Fore Grip. It does not not this an AOW. You guys are wrong. ATF has already confirmed that it does not violate the NFA. I completely know how to purchase An NFA item and know the complete process to manufacture. Do some reading and correct yourselves before correcting others.
I know I know not to accurate, wont hold zero... blah blah blah. I have had this style dust cover on for awhile and no issues with it not holding zero. I am currently working on a custom dust cover similar to the dogleg version.
I have a copy of the letter sent to me from ATF NFA washington DC branch. I posted my info on the High Road user name N1GHTMAN. If you need it go there to get it. It is legal on a pistol but only the Magpul AFG or AFG2.
@jollydwarf also bought the magpul sling to attach to the sling plate under the PG. The model is Magpul_MS2_Sling_High_Strength_with_Metal_mounts(Black)- Paid $15.50 on eBay for it from seller " the.10.ring " Great deal, its a real quality sling and perfect fit for the mini. Good luck in your endeavours.
Midwest Industries is now taking preorders for a new style handguard that they are creating for the mini draco, go to AR15.com under ak pistol forum. They are trying to see how much interest they can stir up before they actually start manufacturing.
