You must be referring to the copycat Aloris style tool post. I had a wedge style and the problem that I had was with the tool holders. If the dovetails were machined slightly oversized the qctp would not lock down on the tool holder. After purchasing 20 tool holders and having the quality issues with over half of the tool holders being slightly oversized I decided to go with the plunger style QCTP. There is an issue with repeatability when changing out tool holders but the tool holders lock down solid in comparison with the wedge style that has issues with locking down. This can literally be solved with money, if you have deep pockets and can afford the upwards of $2000 to purchase the name brand QCTP and holders you’ll have higher accuracy and repeatability. Great video, I made this tool and I am currently making the drill guides just waiting for the tool steel to arrive
Thanks for the warning on the Aloris copy. This was the one I was referring to. My idea was to buy the post, and make the tool holder's my self. Which would be quite easy to do. Although they are fairly cheap to buy. You'll find the finger plate really useful. Cheers Nobby
Thanks Julia for the nice comments. To think seven years ago I would not have had a clue what a Finger Plate was, or what it was for! Heard something shocking today that Mamod is closing its doors. Hope it's not true. ATB Nobby
Thanks Andre. The finger plate is a very useful tool. A nice project to make as well. Very handy when working on small parts on model engine building. Cheers Nobby
Thanks Mark. I did look at the Hemingway one, but felt the plate was far too small. The OD of the drill guides too small as well. My one cost a fraction of their one. I'm a cheap scate, but the pension made me do it 😂 Cheers Nobby
Hi Brian, I would rather like a Multifix tool holder, which are available from a supplier here. Sadly way beyond my price range. The Aloris copy is possible, and I could make my own tool holders. Cheers Nobby
If you're drilling a hole in a small piece of metal, you mount it over the V cut out and clamp it down with the finger. The V cut out gives you a clearance for the drill. Take a look at my video of 1 year ago called "Finger Plate Shop Made". I give a full description on it. Cheers Nobby.
