It's still my preferred sculpting medium. I do have a cool video in the works where I'll be doing a comparison of 3 similar sculpting mediums all at once.

Thanks for the review. Glad to know this at least falls into the acceptable range in comparison to the older version. I'm curious though; I noticed in some of your older videos you used the white/soft clay shapers on the Fimo vs. the black/extra firm ones that are in this video. Was that on purpose or does it even matter?

I found that the flesh tone is less bouncy than the green, but I might be wrong. temperature plays a part after all. I went to super sculpy for a while after using it on some large sculptures, but I think that fimo is probably more versatile and all round better for miniature work. and now that I've started using sculpy techniques with it I think I've struck upon my favourite method of working. I use enamel thinner and paintbrushes to refine the surfaces of skin etc. really helps me to blend and smooth my work, as I tend to be quite a sharp 'painterly' sculptor. not like your style, with its nice clean look. I envy the clarity of your style. almost looks like a digital sculpt, not to disparage traditional sculpture of course.

Hi there Tom! Thank you once again for sharing your knowledge with us! I've managed to find a polymer clay here in Brazil and have been sculpting with it. It seems similar with Fimo professional. Anyway, I've been wondering if you could show us how you adapt your style when sculpting different things or themes. For exemple, when you were sculpting with Tre, you did so in a very different style than your normal minis. You could show us how to make dwarves and armor for exemple. Both a full plate armor and dwarvish armor have a more stout and solid look and style. Greetings from Brazil!!!
@TomMasonSculptor
@TomMasonSculptor 7 лет назад
Great suggestion Ricardo. I've been wanting to make some videos on dwarves and definitely need to hit on armor. Thanks for watching, hope to get to those soon.

i might need to pick up mix quick. i bought some pro to compare with my supersculpey and it was a crumbly mess. neaded a small chunck with some vasoline and that helped but it still tended to crack
@TomMasonSculptor
@TomMasonSculptor 7 лет назад
Kasey OBrien yeah sounds like Mix Quick would definitely help. I'm wondering if you got a bad batch. Most fresh clay is pretty supple.

Hi Tom, I've picked up some of the Dolphin Grey Fimo Pro. It's a really nice neutral grey, a little lighter than your mix. After working with it for a few months, do you think there might ever be a need to add Mix Quick with the Fimo Pro, such as when rolling out sheets for clothing?
@TomMasonSculptor
@TomMasonSculptor 7 лет назад
Mikey R if you notice cracking when it gets thin, then yes, add some mix quick. Otherwise you should be fine.

Hey dude, awesome video as usual! I was wondering what the next step was after having the skill and ability to create miniatures, so after you gain this skill, what do you do after? Do you contact big companies like Reaper to work for them or something? Thanks man.
@TomMasonSculptor
@TomMasonSculptor 7 лет назад
What you do next is up to your own ambitions. If you're content to have the ability to make minis for your own amusement, keep sculpting and building up your horde. If you want to make money doing it, than build the best portfolio you can and put it out there. Reaper is a great company to work for but there are TONS of smaller companies all looking to hire miniature sculptors. There's definitely no shortage of work.

what do you think about fimo air for sculpting/conversions?
@MrUltimateHarris
@MrUltimateHarris 7 лет назад
Heeyy hows it going dude! Awesome videos man, I love sculpting too, I was wondering if you had to study anatomy to a great extent to become really proficient like yourself. I have a basic understanding of anatomy, like the insertions and origins of the muscles, but nothing really crazy, thanks =)
@TomMasonSculptor
@TomMasonSculptor 7 лет назад
I went to school for illustration and there was a big emphasis on learning the proportions of the body and practicing drawing. However I never studied anatomy in a medical sense where I know what all the parts are called and exactly how they connect. Most of my knowledge comes from looking at anatomy and either drawing or sculpting it. There was an inherent sense of anatomy when I first started, but in some ways I definitely "faking it". As you keep drawing and sculpting you learn more about what's right and what's wrong, correcting as you develop. Thanks!

I’ve tried fimo pro from both amazon and hobby lobby, both seem more crumbly and less shiny than what you use here. Have you experienced this since you made this vid? I’m new so not sure
@TomMasonSculptor
@TomMasonSculptor 5 лет назад
That’s very unfortunate. The only time I’ve experienced that is when the clay was old. However, before we pass total judgement try a couple of these suggestions: 1. Make sure you warm up and knead the clay before using it. Depending on ambient temperature, the clay can seem crumbly when it’s just at a cool temperature. 2. Purchase FIMO Mix-Quick conditioner. This is a nice adaptive which will condition the clay and bring it back to the nice supple quality that’s good for sculpting. Let me know if this helps.

Hi Tom. Question for you: I am planning to customize a metal Ral Partha mini. I sculpt using fimo soft. If I add fimo to the metal miniature, will the metal mini get damaged in the oven? I believe it's made of pewter.
@TomMasonSculptor
@TomMasonSculptor 5 лет назад
Hi Halsey, the metal mini should be totally fine at FIMO baking temperatures. Most pewter shouldn’t melt until you get above 300 degrees F.
@mooncabbagere
@mooncabbagere 7 лет назад
Is FIMO soft suitable for this sort of sculpting? Before I get into trouble for raiding the GF's stash to mix up a batch.
@TomMasonSculptor
@TomMasonSculptor 7 лет назад
+Mooncabbage you can sculpt with Soft, but it's VERY soft. It also doesn't hold up well in some mold-making processes.

hey Tom, good video. I wanted to ask you, Im new to sculpting (using Air drying stuff for now), whats the best tool to use to hold the working sculpture? I find that when im holding it and shaping it, any reasonable force applied on one side messes up the other. I see that wooden thing you use, whats that called, and does that require using wires for sculpting? (I dont use wires)
@TomMasonSculptor
@TomMasonSculptor 3 года назад
I Bob. I use those wooden block armature holders you see in my videos. I made a video on how to make them and will be putting a limited supply up for sale on my website soon. I highly recommend using an armature when sculpting. Wire is typical, but even if you build up a bit of clay/putty and let that harden is better than working the entire piece as soft material. As you said, there is nothing to keep it stable if you don't use an armature and that will make you need to brace the clay with your hand.
@sacamentobob
@sacamentobob 3 года назад
@@TomMasonSculptor hey Tom. Thanks for taking the time to reply. Im staying clear of armatures/wire for now and recently (since messaging you) started doing part of the putty and leaving that to harden first before continuing to work on the sculpture. Definitely adds an extra step to the work but I find it's the only way. Ill watch more of your videos (new to your channel) and I find your style very good. The no nonsense approach is excellent.

why do we have have to put little little layers instead of putting sufficient material and then mould it? And does water work with fimo to make it sofT?

You don’t have to add a little at a time, but that’s what I prefer. I wouldn’t miss water with your FIMO.

yeah they are all a bit spongier than the classic but i actually prefer it. but that is likely due to the fact that i like super sculpy, which does generally have a rubbery aspect to it, at least in comparison to fimo classic.

Martyn Wootton it is not as strong as putty but it can be cast if you use low temp rubbers.

Tom, my polymer clay minis always crack inside the oven. The time is right, the temperature is right... the clay is properly prepared... I dunno what am I doing wrong 😔 help me please
@TomMasonSculptor
@TomMasonSculptor 9 месяцев назад
I have two thoughts about this. First, is the clay super old? Second, what is under the clay? Do you have layers of baked clay underneath fresh clay? Or are your layers of clay super thick? I'm assuming you are sculpting at a standard miniature size like 28mm.

Hmmm. That’s not really my area of expertise. However, I think FIMO would be fine for making the prototypes. Just not sure how well it would hold up as a stand alone figure.

This is maybe a dumb question but.... Has anyone tried to sculpt something on a plastic model an then bake that shit? :D cause having endless workingtime sounds pretty good. I work with grey stuff and its wonderful but gets firm pretty quick.
@TomMasonSculptor
@TomMasonSculptor 2 года назад
I haven’t used polyclay on a plastic model, but I have used plastic in a sculpt that was later baked. Not a good idea though. The plastic will melt and your figure will be ruined. The putty is also much more durable. I know the short curing time isn’t great, but it’s usually the best option.
@flkpnzr8303

@@TomMasonSculptor Thank you for your answer. I feared that baking plastic wouldn't be a great idea.
