Bob Popovic was the originator of the surf candy. He tied these to mimic sand eels and small baitfish. They still work today many years later and are a staple in many saltwater Fishermans boxes. They are fairly easy to tie, however the epoxy work tends to take some time if you want it done right. But you can tie up a few of these quickly. I find they work great for freshwater fish as well as saltwater. It is a great pattern to mimic small fry in freshwater. The colors also are endless, and I have seen people tie these with craft fur, ep fiber, bucktail, flashy dubbing and more. They are very versatile. The best part is, because of all the epoxy, they are quite durable. You will rarely have one fall apart on you. Even some of the most toothy fish will not be able to damage the thread and unravel this fly.

Love Surf Candies! I like to wrap my hook shank with a few strands of flashabou to make a gut tract. I also quickly flash my thick resin with a lighter to get rid of any bubbles that form. Probably not needed but helps it to look better in my eyes! Appreciate your videos!

good ideas. I have wrapped flashabou as well before and it gives a great look. However sometimes I like a quick and dirty version where I can fill a box quicker. I skip some steps to make it quicker. Especially when trying to fill a box for white bass fishing. However its a great option to do that with some type of body wrap. As for the lighter trick, never really did that before, I will have to try it. Bubbles don't really bother me too much as they can look like scales, and I doubt the fish care. However at times when trying to catch fisherman (I sell flies) this might be a handy trick. I appreciate the recommendations.

@@McFlyAngler speaking of scales, have you ever tried adding some holographic glitter under the thick for scales? Always wanted to try it but have not done so myself yet.

Glad you enjoyed the video. Should work for any fish that eats other little fish. Just use a heavier hook for jacks. Those can pull and I’m sure this is too light for them.

Great looking fly m8!!! But I learned by watching á bunch of videos, that if you run a ligter along the body it draws out the bubbles.

The south end of San Diego Bay is loaded with little bay anchovies. Like "2 eyeballs and a wiggle" size. This pattern could be a real winner.

Question, so for the UV resin/glue heads, you do it layers at a time right, well at least after watching it seems that way. But hot glue would work as well for making fly heads if I donʻt have UV resin right?

It could sure, I think hot glue though would be tough to get the right shape as it would set before you can set it. Try 5 minute epoxy If you don’t want resin. But keep in mind you need them to spin the whole time until they set.

What’s the name of that pattern? I think the surf candy has been around for a long time. Originally created by Bob Popovics in the 70’s. I believe he started with bucktail, this is just a variation of the surf candy

Naw man, they are cool. I’m not like exclusive with Risen. Risen doesn’t make this style of hook, at least not thin like this. They make a similar one, but it’s super heavy. All their stuff is great but they don’t have everything. What they do have is great though.
