What does that crossover do? I thought they were only for splitting the frequency spectrum if you had multiple different drivers. Just curious because it seems important

Just started to learn about speaker building and really glad I found your channel. I know it’s not necessarily the point of these videos, but a text overlay of the goals, constraints, and decisions made in each step of your process would make a sweet addition to these build videos.

What is the purpose of the crossover If the speaker is made with a single driver? Is this to avoid very low frequencies in order not to damage the small driver?
@liamcooper5202
@liamcooper5202 5 лет назад
Yes. These look like Hybrid Audio 4inch drivers. While they can and will play sub 80hz notes the power handling suffers. Typical used ranges are 500-17000hz. But its not asking too much if you want to drop that to 200 or 150. I would pass sub 200hz off to a 6inch driver. Just what i would do.

I know this is an older video but I came here from your post on Parts Express. What components are you using to make the filter? I have the same drivers and the sound isn't that great for me. I assume a little filter is needed. Some 'tuning' as it might be. I like them, just think they can be better. Thanks!

, are those a type of bass blocker type crossovers?? if those are point source full range driver's why a cross over ?
@JiveDadson
@JiveDadson 6 лет назад
They boost the midrange and what bass the speakers can produce. Ideally one would put them on a high-pass filter also and employ a subwoofer. The high-pass would prevent large but inaudible excursion.
@speakersr-lyefaudio6830
@speakersr-lyefaudio6830 5 лет назад
Tim Schutte Look up baffle step compensation crossover. In a box most full range drivers are going to be boosted in the higher frequencies and sound lackluster in the lower frequencies, what the crossover is for is to attenuate the higher frequencies so it sounds more full.
@belovedconsole

I built a very similar set a couple months back using the same drivers. They sound AMAZING. Super transparent and the soundstage is immense for a desktop setup. Factoring in the price, and these are insanely good. Mine are in slot vented enclosures on the desk with a recycled Klipsch sub (5.1 pro media ultra) at my feet all run by a Dayton 2.1 plate amp.

It won't never sound as good as a two way .. Great aesthetics but don't think that it'll sound better as your car audio or cheap computer speakers BTW, when will you invest on microphone for measurements ? ;) Would be great to see a curve of your babies !

@feltsjc
@feltsjc 6 лет назад
Dim RC possibly, but then again, we are talking about $20 dollar speakers. If you can get a tweet, a mid, and an x-over for the same price, you would be lucky if it sounded that good. Hearing the point source 3.5s I'm really interested in the 8" ones but they are 10x the price (a bit high for me to experiment with)

I'm glad you are back! I was worried that you were dead (or worse... expelled, haha). One question: Why do you connect a single resistor parallel to the inputs?
@RennieAsh
@RennieAsh 6 лет назад
kukackaja it's possibly to help shape the inductor filter. Using just an inductor in series can sometimes become less effective at higher frequencies as the driver's impedance rises with frequency. The parallel resistor perhaps reduces this effect.
@liamcooper5202
@liamcooper5202 5 лет назад
Most likely to drop the speakers impedance. These maybe 8ohm speakers but the amp maybe rated for 4 or 6ohm loads. Its like adding another speaker in parallel without needed extra power to drive it.

I have noticed in a number of your videos you glue finished wood together. I realize there isn't a lot of stress on these joints but to get the best longest lasting hold you really should connect bare wood to bare wood, whether you tape them up or sand the finish off. As the glue ages it may actually fail on those finished parts. I do enjoy your videos and style so keep it up.

Sticking the 10W resistors, which will dissipate heat onto the silicone blob causing it to eventually dry and fail, to the coils (whose impedance characteristics will change with temperature rising) was not a good idea. It would have been probably a better idea to solder them to a breadboard, and screw it to the back wall of the speaker. My two cents, for future reference.

How does something like this compare to popular low-cost bookshelf speakers like that Edifier 1280T? Everyone raves about those and they’re only $99, they have two inputs, and a built-in amp. I like the idea of building something like this but for twice the cost (including one of the decent low cost amps) are they that much better?
@KirbyMeetsAudio
@KirbyMeetsAudio 6 лет назад
I don't think it's so much about which sound better for the money. If BUILDING your own speakers is something you're interested in, then this the place for you. If you're looking for a good deal on a pair of speakers, Amazon is probably where you should be looking. Thanks!
@RennieAsh

The sweet spot of diy price competitiveness is apparently over $200 and less than $2000. Too cheap and you'll likely be outdone by bulk buy components, too expensive and you'll be competing with technology and design equipment beyond your reach. But since you can potentially make the diy sound as good as up to 5× the cost of similar commercial offerings, it's great in this range. You have to enjoy it too otherwise the time you sink is not worth it, especially at the cheap end.

Correct. It's called Baffle step correction if you are intrested.
@FaithsFallen
@FaithsFallen 6 лет назад
Basically, when you put a full range speaker/driver in a box the treble frequencies have a 6db gain over the bass and some mid frequencies. A Baffle Step Correction circuit is designed using some mathematics taking into account the dimensions of the box the driver is going into and electrical characteristics of the driver to attenuate the treble by a set amount normally 6db but it will depend on the speaker design. It helps to make a full range driver have the same volume across all frequencies. Again I stress 'basically' as its a minefield of physics and mathematics!
@pricesg
@pricesg 6 лет назад
here is the baffle step correction formula - diyaudioprojects.com/Technical/Baffle-Step-Correction-Circuit-Calculator/
@RennieAsh
@RennieAsh 6 лет назад
Oddly enough, sometimes using just one inductor by itself will create a very broad notch filter, as it will start rolling off higher frequencies, but as frequency gets even higher, the driver voice coil impedance rises, making the inductor less effective until it may do nothing at all to some treble range. This full range driver is likely to have a low impedance rise, and the resistors used may help alleviate a reactive tendency. Or, if the driver has a bit of a midrange bump, then it'll help flatten everything out!
