Sorry , no airplanes this time ! I could not resist and filmed this little wonder during my visit to one of Kent's top tourist attractions! It is Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Railway
The The railway was the dream of millionaire racing drivers Captain John Edwards Presgrave ("Jack") Howey and Count Louis Zborowski. The RH&DR has been drawing crowds since it opened in 1927 and now operates the most complete collection of one-third full-sized steam locomotives in the world. These small but perfectly-formed trains, take just over an hour to complete the full journey from Hythe to Dungeness but there are opportunities to get off and explore along the way too. The natural starting place for a journey on the RH&DR is at its station in the historic and pretty town of Hythe. It’s one of six along the track, which stretches 13 miles across the picturesque Romney Marsh to Dungeness, one of the largest expanses of shingle in the world, a place of other-worldly beauty and a designated National Nature Reserve.
The fleet of ten original steam locomotives remain in service, each covering up to 10,000 miles (16,000 km) a year. The RH&DR is still the only user of the 4-8-2 Mountain type locomotive in the UK, with No 6 Samson and No 5 Hercules in regular service.
With several stations in between, all within walking distance of the beautiful Kent coastline, the railway gives passengers an opportunity to explore this unique corner of Kent. Coast & country walks, with all manner of wildlife & flora to be seen, cycle rides, medieval churches and iconic lighthouses are all on your doorstep.

It gets even more awesome at the other end of the line. Most of it is double tracked and Hythe has a turntable and loco shed. As well as the six Pacific's loosely modelled on LNER prototypes there are two Canadian outline locos that are very impressive. The pulling power of these small locos pulling these long trains on a 26 mile round trip is also impressive although helped by the fact that the country is as flat as a pancake so no gradients stop

Fish & Aggregates being the most common freight products that were carried. During WW2 because of its coastal location, it was taken over by the Military, and operated an Armoured "Anti-Aircraft" train which claimed to have shot done at least one Me110 !

NOT A "mini road crossing", this railway crosses a number of busy roads, in a handful of towns. And the law states road vehicles MUST give way to trains. Hence the crossings have barriers and warning lights like ANY road/rail crossing. These "little" locomotives weigh up to 10 tons, and we know from experience when they hit idiot car drivers, they destroy the car, and the loco come out virtually unscathed. The trains may be travelling at up to 30mph on certain crossings, & can be pulling a 100tons of coaches & passengers ! It is NOT A TOY many have made that mistake & been seriously injured or killed !!!

The Ravenglass & Eskdale is the same gauge, but that's were the similarity ends. It operated publicly advertised passenger trains (and freight) all year round. Trains normally travel at a steady 30mph but are capable of speeds of up to 50mph, as Captain Howey proved, decades ago.

It opened as a public transport system providing regular timetabled passenger (& freight) services. The fleet of steam locomotives include a handful of one third full size replicas of the famous "Flying Scotsman", as well as Canadian & German types, & even a couple of 4-8-2 "Mountain" class freight locos. They weigh up to 10 tons each, and usually haul the regular services at around 30mph, but some are capable of significantly higher speeds. The locos are of course now approaching 100 years old. The Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Railway opened in 1927, as the "Worlds Smallest Public Railway". The line runs for 13 miles along the Kent coast linking a number of towns from Hythe to Dungeness. It was laid out as a Double track mainline for speed, and operated both passenger & freight services. Despite the small size of the trains it has to comply with the same safety rules of the "Full size" National Network. Which includes signalling. It has a fleet of 15 inch gauge locomotives mainly steam, that weigh in at around 10 tons each, that usually operate at speeds of around 30mph, but are capable of significantly higher speeds. They haul trains of up to 100 tons of carriages & passengers usually in formations of 11 or 12 coaches, but at busy holidays these can be extended often to 15 or more coaches. It even has catering & observation cars.

It is my goal in life to make or surpass this railroad. I hope to make an empire out of this. That is why I am in civil engineering now (don't see the value in it right now but I hope it will all come together by the time I am done) I should probably actually work on building the engine itself over the next few summers or something.
@railwaymechanicalengineer4587

To make a railway like the Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Railway (The Worlds Smallest Public Railway) you're going to need something in the region of £200 MILLION (U.S. $250 MILLION). Just one of those steam locos to build new today will cost around £1.5 MILLION. This railway was opened in 1927, & stretches for 13 MILES along the Kent Coast, linking a number of towns. It has a large fleet of locos & rolling stock. It may look "small" but those locos weigh in at around 10 tons each, haul trains of up to 100 tons, and travel normally at 30mph. Although they can go significantly faster ! IT IS NOT A TOY, , and many people who have thought it is a toy, have been seriously injured or Killed. When these trains hit cars on level crossings the cars are ALWAYS destroyed.

@@railwaymechanicalengineer4587 i suppose so, but I was planning on starting small, like less than 5 miles if that unless I get an investor already. I plan on starting out at model train clubs and spending the time to both learn how to machine the trains, and also maximum of 7.5" gauge, probably closer to 5" for the first couple bigger ones you can realistically sit inside of. That way I can see if it actually works before sending it along any future rails. It's small, but I hope I can get customers. My main business model (assuming I actually make a name for myself) is if the company or university wants to pay for all of the infrastructure and legalities, then I would do all of the manual labor. That why I can focus on laying track and troubleshooting and not have to spend money or time on land disputes, and at least I know they will use it after.
@TheStickCollector
@TheStickCollector 6 месяцев назад
@@railwaymechanicalengineer4587Seems like my reply either got hidden or never sent, but to summarize, I want to start off with small model trains before moving on to 5" or 7.5" gauge, learning how to machine along the way and use model railway clubs as a training ground to learn. Once I perfect my skills I will offer to build the tracks and layout as the prospective company or university demands after they pay for the labor, track layout, and land claims needed to build the tracks. Basically make them come to me if they want to be a part of an exclusive railway network with no shipping costs.

@@railwaymechanicalengineer4587 3rd time trying to send a message; sorry if you actually got all of these, but I don't seem them after refreshing the page. to summarize, I want to start off with small model trains before moving on to 5" or 7.5" gauge, learning how to machine along the way and use model railway clubs as a training ground to learn. @@railwaymechanicalengineer4587I have been spending messages for like 10 minutes now, and one not even relating to what I want to make a career out of is sending. What is this place anyways? To summarize: start off at model railway clubs, learn skills, and let the company or school pay for all but the physical labor of laying the tracks and engines. That why I can stop worrying so much about money.
