Mini Tube Screamer vs Wampler Tumnus. It’s a thumb drive tone off!!!

So here's a side by side, under 1 minute tonal comparison between two of the more popular thumb drives on the market. Both set to 12 oclock on all knobs. Both going through a 61 SG reissue into a VHT D fifty amp.
Conclusion:
First off the Tumnus is obviously a bit louder at noon on the output. Not a big deal, plenty of room to boost the TS. So oddly, I think the Tumnus is a lot more naturally dialed in at these settings that the Tube Screamer. But, if I were to bring up the highs in the Tube Screamer to dial it in, I think I would actually like it less as they tend to get a bit harsh on the highs when pushed. The Tumnus is a bit tighter and more transparent clearly with less gainy sound but the TS has more color at 12 oclock. There's no where to hide with the Tumnus, like most Klon clones, you're going to hear every slight mistake but if you're a clean player it's going to make you sparkle. Especially through a dumble style amp like the one I'm using. For me, it would just come down to the gig. TS for more rock gigs. Tumnus for more blues and soul gigs.

That Wampler Tumnus sounds awesome! I’ve been using a tube screamer and a RAT together for killer tone 🤘

Does the drive knob have a little wiggle or play when you try to move it from side to side? Because my brand new ts mini have. I just want to know if we have the same case. Thank you in advance😊

I've since gotten rid of the mini in favor of the full size but it shouldn't have any wiggle. Is the wiggle from the actual part itself or just from the plastic knob? if it's just the plastic knob, there may be a small tightening screw on the side you can tighten to make it more snug. If it's from the actual part, I'd send it back for a new one. Hope that helps.

This is apples and oranges tho…. The Tumnus is a Klon clone.

Correct. I'm not trying to see who's the best Klon clone in this vid though, just generally comparing the characteristics of two popular thumb drives that people often buy.

@@GuitarlordJohnBurton the point that you are missing is that for most guitar players, both of these are tools you need in the toolbox. Apart from beginners buying their first pedal or two, this is not a crossroad many will find themselves at.
@GuitarlordJohnBurton

@@Flat_Stanley You just said it, "Apart from beginners buying their first pedal or two" That's literally who the video is for and there are probably more of them then seasoned players. It's not a video for me, right now, but 25 years ago, absolutely. I think you're underestimating how many novice players exist who haven't played every pedal. They are plentiful. If I put up an intermediate level vid explaining how to slip the II,V, I chord progression into your regular 12 bar blues on this small little channel, it would get 6 total views. But this little vid for beginners that took 5 mins to make, has 24k and 350 thumbs up. What I'm saying is, why wouldn't I make a vid that's useful to beginners? There are millions of them.

I tend to favor klons way more than Tube Screamers. Hell I even built a klon style pedal that I sell but that TS felt really good to play this time for some reason. But yeah, listening back, tonally there’s no comparison for what I favor. The Tumnis

Especially through a super warm clean amp like a vintage fender reverb that might get a little muddy after a while. Tumnus clarity is really nice.

nothing is bad really, it boils down to a guitarist preferred tone, tumnus is more like in your sound, ts is very smooth but it cuts through

An apples and oranges comparison recorded with a potato…just what we all needed! 😂
@GuitarlordJohnBurton
@GuitarlordJohnBurton 3 месяца назад
Yeah? And? Why would anyone compare apples to apples? They’re both apples. The whole point is to compare an apple to and orange and put the vast differences on blast so those who perhaps have had an apple but not an orange can become aware of said extreme differences. Apples to Oranges comparisons are probably more used in guitaring than apples to apples. Gibson vs Fender. Fender vs Marshall etc. It isnt until someone has eaten all the fruits that Tube Screamer 808 vs Tube Screamer Keely Mod becomes all the relevant. You are correct about the potato though.
@Flat_Stanley
@Flat_Stanley 3 месяца назад
@@GuitarlordJohnBurton I can help you with that question. More people are trying to decide between one apple over another than one of the 7800+ species of apples over a specific species of oranges. Apparently, you are one of the few that find a video comparing two different style pedals dialed settings that no guitar player ever uses. Maybe these pedals are both new to you and this was somehow helpful to you. If so, that’s great. Myself and so many others are simply pointing out that this is not the type of video most guitar players are just dying to watch more of.

@GuitarlordJohnBurton

More like a mocha latte vs Maxwell House black coffee. Although very different, still the same general product category of bean based beverage but I get your point. For it to be as you described I would have pitted the Tumnus guitar pedal Vs a pack of Big League Chew from the 80’s. Which I would do except I already ate all the Big League Chew. Still top 5 chewing gums ever invented in my opinion and when considering the marketing? Forget about it. It knows no equal. Making a cheap gum shaped like chewing tobacco and selling to kids so they can be like their idols who were chewing actual tobacco was brilliant. Come to think of it, I wouldn’t doubt if Big Tobacco actually owned and developed Big League Chew as a way to get the youth to start thinking about using mouth tobacco. Like a gateway product. Now I want some Big League Chew. Alright, thanks for the comment, Im gonna go find some Big League Chew. Rock On!!!
