also, the Mini is not really bad, but I'd use it probably if I'm using drop tunings and playing metal rhythm... it gives a much tighter sound to it. Thanks a tonne for this review. Really really helpful!

Great comparison! Valuable video! At low gain, the 9 is more satisfying with that set up and his hands... but when the gain gets high, the 808 and the Mini are very comparable - the sparkle is there. This video makes me want to sell my TS-9. ... and now I want a good 808. I really want a Mini for my smaller "bar gig" board.

When they reissued these TS9s I did not think about what it was that made them so special. I got one when I seen it for a good price and the outstanding quality That struck me right away was that it only boosted the volume and Kept the tonal quality of the guitar. When I was fooling around with the circuit to change it to an 808 I did not like it as much as the TS9 sound but thats to my ears. Thanks for posting these videos Rob. c];-D

To my ears...in the very first run in this video...TS9 seemed to be a bit more transparent and a bit less compressed...TS mini and 808 on the other hand seemed more simmilar one to another
@nicholasgross62
@nicholasgross62 4 года назад
I think that the 808 sounds better situationally, usually sounding slightly better than the 9 when the tone is already flavored very well prior to the signal to the pedal, but the 9 definitely stands out taking a lacking tone and giving it depth, which I think is much more useful. As for the mini, I felt like it does a good job of compressing the volume and tones when playing rhythm (reminds me of Van Halen) and has a little bit of a digital amp modeling a tube amp feel, compared to the 808 which sounds like a classic tube amp, or the 9 that sounds like a nice newer tube amp. That’s my opinion but I’d probably go with the 808 personally because I feel that the 9 has a little more drive, and my amp and guitars tone is already driven through different effects on my pedal board, and the 9 might feel like “too much icing” on top of that... I wish I had the cash to try both with my setup, but I think if I did the difference would be so negligible that it would come down to how the pedals affect the styles I primarily play, using extremely specific songs side by side with the tone dialed in precisely how I like it. Beyond that the difference is probably not noticeable comparatively through an entire set

The circuits are the same in the 808 and 808 mini. Exactly the same, on every value of every resistance and capacitance. The TS9 has a slightly different final voltage divider configuration at the very tail end of the output buffer that raises the output by a fraction of a percent, and has absolutely no impact on the tone of the signal. There is FAR more difference in these pedals due to the tolerances of the individual components than there is between their designs. Most of the capacitors in the filters have tolerances of 10%. You might like one TS-808 mini and hate another one because the high pass filter in the clipping stage of the circuit of one pedal is 10% higher, and 10% lower in the other, but there's no way you can predict whether a TS-808 will sound better than a TS-9 or vice versa, because they might as well be the same product. Also, if they did a blind test I would bet money that they couldn't tell which was which.

kc collette Good point. They all three use two BJTs each for the input and output buffers. Now it probably wouldn't degrade the signal much, but it's probably a bigger difference than the changed resistor values in the output buffers.
@rldays9179
@rldays9179 8 лет назад
In the end when you are up on stage and you got your Big sky or RV6 or DD7 or whatever the difference probably wouldn't show and if it did, the user would probably change their pedal slightly to suit what they like and to suit the venue. And then as your valves warm up it may change again....or if you are an outdoor venue or...or...or.. I just got a cheap TS9 and be done with it lol

I currently have a mini, and its really greet, but one of the best things is because it's small and narrow, you can get it nicely close to another overdrive, or distortion or clean boost like the spark boost. Then you can turn 2 pedals on and off at the same time, if necessary.
@DeltaOracle257
@DeltaOracle257 9 лет назад
I finally got my TS9 the other day! :D I've been trying to see what I can come up with by combining that with my MXR Super Badass distortion. At first, I wanted to have them be 50/50. Y'know, half Overdrive, half Distortion. But, now I've been trying to make the TS9 as kind of the body/core and a little bit of the MXR Super Badass to kind of add a little bit of crispness to it.

I think the reason Rob enjoyed the Tubescreamers on a lower-tuned guitar is because a TS by nature cuts bass and bumps the upper mids up, giving those low strings a lot of definition and punch.

I thought the TS9 and the mini sounded exactly the same. There was something I liked about the 808 a little more. For this kind of shootout, I really prefer blind demonstrations, like 1, 2, 3, and then a reveal at the end which clip was which pedal.

Potentiometers (Overdrive/Level/Gain) have a tolerance of +/-10% or sometimes +/-20%. So even though you have all your knobs set to 12 o'clock, they could sound "10%" different. If you want to take things to the extreme and assume that you have one stomp box with pots that are all -20%, and the one next to it has pots sitting at +20% of the given value, the pedals can sound "40%" different. There are a bunch of other factors (capacitor and resistor tolerance) that can affect it as well. I don't want to rustle everyone's jimmies. Just pointing out some electronics facts.
@orlock20
@orlock20 9 лет назад
soad11dude That is true and the problem is much worse with fuzz pedals because they already sit on a fine line between usable and junk. With a distortion pedal, you try a dozen different pedals. With a fuzz pedal, you may have to try 12 different pedals that are the same model.
@soad11dude
@soad11dude 9 лет назад
True! Fuzz pedals are usually a very simple design and don't need to be off by much to completely miss the mark and sound like ass. I'm happy I got an educated answer instead of somebody saying I'm wrong and writing an angry comment in CAPS!!!! Cheers.

@tonepoet
@tonepoet 8 лет назад
You are absolutely correct. Only corksniffers really dissect this all to a point where it's beyond ridiculous. You audience doesn't know (or care) about the nuances that guitarists obsess over. And within a band setting..........very negligible. There are so many pedals that are variations on the Tube Screamers that really, what's the point? Sorry to rant, but you're correct.
@JarodGallantOfficial
@JarodGallantOfficial 8 лет назад
There comes a point when its not about the crowd. 50% of the crowd couldn't tell a 59 les paul from a guitar from toys r us. It also depends on every players individual ear. Anyone can tell the difference between an awful and a great tone, but it takes a well trained ear to hear whats great and whats better.Its also much harder to hear differences through a youtube video. The band point is good because it would be quite a bit more negligible in a live mix, except for the guitar player, who will play better if they think their tone is better.
@tds2117
@tds2117 3 года назад
There’s zero difference between TS models. The real difference is the potentiometers used, because of the difference in resistance. This would apply to two different TS9s even. Two made in the same week by the same factory could sound fairly different from one another. It’s a very inconsistent build. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3c5Ar-iaWRE.html

I'm totally with Rob on this one - the TS-9 sounds the best to my ear. The mini has an interesting edge to it that could certainly work for many people and many tones, but it's not as pleasing for whatever reason. The 808 just doesn't thrill me at all.

thank you for mentioning the LEDs on ibanez! my main lighting tech for two years really liked how my guitar looked under red light, so my side of the stage always was hit with a couple of red cans. this meant i never knew if my TS9DX was on or off. led to some very underwhelming opening riffs and some way aggressive gentle chords to start a song.

Hey Lee, you might not see this but I think better than setting up 150 different pedals for demos, set up a few different SMALL pedalboards with 5 different price points for 5 different types of pedals. In other words, get a small pedalboard with 5 overdrive pedals from cheapest to most expensive, then another small pedalboard with 5 different clean boosts, compressors, etc. I think it would get people to buy more pedals, personally. Buying pedals is always a weird thing in stores, at least here in the US, having to bug a salesman to go into the case and get a bunch of different pedals and set them all up for you to play, just feels like such a burden. Just a suggestion, from a customer of music stores!

I'm 55 years old been playing since I'm 15. My first electric guitar experience around 1980 shortly thereafter a friend had a digital delay pedal then I remember a tube screamer coming in a Wawa pedal all of those with such exciting revelations in life. Then I got it Ibanez stereo chorus which I hooked up to two separate amps and I was the king of the high school scene. At least in my own mind LOL the tube screamer has such a great deep place in my heart specially because I'm a big Stevie Ray Vaughan fan but I love the ACDC type tones I've always able to count on Ibanez Tube Screamer like a solid friend. Compare the 808 and the mini with the same settings, please. I think the different knob orientation threw them a bit with those two.

Shouldnt the shoot out have each pedal isolated from each other ? IE in true bypass loop for each pedal ? at least to give each pedal to react against a high impedance source each ? That might (partially) explain some of the slight characteristic differences ? (IE Ts buffer bypass into a TS808 is going to react differently to a direct guitar input source)

You need to do this test again with something like a Boss Katana which a lot of people have. Not everyone will be using a 2-3k amp like Rob.

The Mini is an 808 not a 9. Don't agree with which you guys think sounds better. The 808/Mini do it for me. Never quite got on with the TS9 myself. I owned the Maxon 808 for time but now have the Mini...

Hey Rob, one of the best tones I've heard from you in these videos! I love the tone of the Silverback live, but for these pedal demo's I prefer something a bit less 'Rah'. if you will! Great video regardless!

It's cheaper to buy a TS-9 from America even with the shipping costs, you'll save £30/£40 altogether. Andertons will rip you off. I'm in the UK and had mine sent from New York because the prices are extortionate over here. Only had to wait a week and didn't feel like I was being robbed.
@monabri6500
@monabri6500 8 лет назад
+ouncy It's not just pedals - its's amps and guitars - in fact - everything with 6 or more strings and related items. Look st the price of a Fender Deluxe - that's why the UK is known as Treasure Island. Oh - I bought a Bassbreaker 007 amp from Andertons for £201 and - one week later - it was £43 more - explanations other than GG and PMT were selling at this price!
@ouncy
@ouncy 8 лет назад
monabri Yeah man, recently bought a new strat, Andertons were selling it for £680, after a quick look over websites that aren't usually listed on google shopping, I managed to get it for £528 from a different shop. Free shipping still. Saved £150. Pretty bad to be honest.
@Yohahn
@Yohahn 8 лет назад
It's mostly due to taxes. When you compare the prices of andertons to chains in countries with almost the same taxes as the UK andertons are usually cheaper. If i compare the 5150 LBX here in Sweden, On Andertons and on Thomann the prices of Thomann and Andertons are cheaper then the swedish price. The price between Andertons and Thomann... Andertons(£430) and Thomann (€566) in swedish kronor £430 is 5160kr and €566 is 5250kr the only price i could find in Sweden is 5500kr. The price i find in america is $699 and that is 5820kr...

Never pay the price marked at a retail guitar store. Unlike a store like Walmart there is always room for negotiating.

The pedals have the same circuit. Only the 808 has a couple of different resistor values in the buffers, which may make a microscopic difference to the sound. They all sound very slightly different at noon; as likely due to minor differences in potentiometer taper as anything, so turn the knobs a fraction, and they become the same. IMO the same sounds live in each pedal. In practical terms they'll all work fine. - Personally I like the "soft clipping" of TS9-type pedals, but I'd prefer a unit designed for less noise, and without the mid-hump, or the ability to dial it out.

The Captain & Chappers - Robert Keeley is a friend of mine, awesome pedal maker and sound guy! His "factory" is in Edmond, Oklahoma, USA, just North of Oklahoma City. I actually have his VERY LAST TubeScreamer mod that he ever made/sold, last one off his inventory shelf, which was to a Ibanez TS9DX Turbo TubeScreamer, which he autographed for me. Just a weird fact, but true. :) Thanks for the video, awesome.
