Recently named "model kit of the year", MiniArt's P-47D (kit No. 48009) has gotten a lot of press lately. In this review and build log video, we'll take a look at what comes in the box, we'll talk about the detail on the interior and other small parts, we'll look at surface detail, marking options, decals, instructions, etc. Additionally, we'll look at Part 1 of the build log: Steps 1-8 of the instructions covering the cockpit and fuselage. I'll cover any problem areas to watch out for and my solutions to them. I am concurrently building the Hasegawa P-47D and Academy P-47N so stay tuned for build log updates on those kits as well. What are my initial impressions? Let's find out together!

Great work! That's an impressive kit. Always a good idea to give a large sacrifice to the carpet monster before tackling a kit like this...

Yeah, and I don't even have carpet! In the last month, I've lost a True Details wheel and this tiny part. Doh!

@@jonsmodelkitreview4624 I keep a big flashlight close by but stuff just disappears sometimes.if it's tiny I don't worry too much. If it's big and important,I try to make one from scratch. The minute I finish the new part, I invariably find the lost one....lol

Not the first time I’ve seen someone have fit issues with this kit. The detail is great but I’m not sure my skills are good enough to fix any issues it may have. Looking forward to part 2

The fit issues are easily fixed, but you do need to carefully clean up and dryfit each part prior to glue. Tedious is the word that comes to mind. Great detail, though. Cheers!

Glad to see manufacturers are building the cockpits this way much easier to work with, you're right about parts heavy, but certainly a lot of detail. I may have to come out of retirement and teach these manufacturers about scaling down rivets. Maybe they accentuate them for a model effect, however, Otaki kits were or have been the only manufactuer to get up in the 90% accuracy range. Too much and kits start looking like Corgi toys. Definitely anxious to see how you paint this one. Cheers Bob

Right on, Bob! There's no need for aftermarket bits in the interior of the MiniArt P-47. You're correct about the surface detail on the Otaki kits. It still holds up surprisingly well. I'm looking forward to seeing how the P-47 looks when painted. Cheers!

Good Morning ☀️…… JON, I think your review is just fine, but that kit has a lot more to COVER… I liked what you said about how much work there is for each step ( PREP-WORK ) it might not be the kit for you I think that is important for a review… YES, your reviews / breakdowns really do help a modeler decide where to go next… Personally, I think it’s a great KIT… I would give it a go, and see what I could do… I definitely would make a Diorama with it, and show off as much detail as possible… At my PACE, it would take me a Year to complete…… Looking forward to seeing the rest of this BUILD / REVIEW… THUNDERBOLT ON…….. where’s my coffee ??????? Hi Jon. Nice work. That's a lot of parts frames for one plane! Looking forward to the rest of the build (and the others!). On dropping parts (especial wheels/tyres). If I knelt on my garage floor and tried to roll, marbles style, a small kit wheel across the garage floor , between the subwoofer and the tool box, have it hit the wall, spin sideways, bounce, and end up stuck in spider web up underneath the stereo cabinet it would be almost impossible. Yet I can do this at 10 at night without even looking. (Found months later. My best guess to how it ended up there). I had a small piece, dropped just under my bench, bounce and lodge in a tiny fold in the plastic bag lining my bucket rubbish bin but up under the rim of the bucket. I crawled around even searching through the bin and under it cursing and saying "but it just dropped here!!!! Where the @#%*$@ can it be!!!". It fell out a couple of days later when it lifted the bag handles up when changing the bag (more cursing ensued!). I am absolutely positive everyone has a similar tale. Cheers Matt🦘🦘🦘

Thanks, Matt! There are just so many places for a small part to hide. I don't lose many parts, but it's still frustrating. I'm continuing to make progress on the P-47s and will incorporate a how-to video on painting radial engines this coming weekend. Cheers!

Hello Jon, what a good video, it is very appropriate to go in parts, the work and dedication that you have put into it is much better appreciated, in itself, the model is visually outstanding, what great details it brings, without needing Photo-etched parts, really impressed Regarding fit details, in general there must be several, from what I have seen in some videos, there are mixed experiences, some ignore showing them, I can't imagine their reasons, but it is good to warn those who think that this is like Tamiya, waiting for the next videos, greetings friend. PS: I am very disappointed with my Eduard fw 190 D9 1/48 old version, although it is true, the details are very good, fit engineering is very bad, in addition to deformed parts...

Thanks, Francisco! Dryryfitting and the ability to work with tiny parts are key on the MiniArt P-47. The engineering seems better than the Eduard Fw190D-9 so far, thankfully! I'm sorry the Eduard is giving you issues like it gave me. You owe it to yourself to do an Eduard Spitfire to make up for it 😉. Cheers!

Nice review and info on the build. I look forward to the next installment. I do wonder about the four piece cowling, looks like it could be a pain if it's not engineered well.

Looks like the Dragon equivalent for 1/48 airplanes. I'll stick with Tamiya if I ever build a P47.

Right on! Knowing what your values are when it comes to kit design is key to happy modeling. The MiniArt P-47 is a great kit, but it's not for everyone. Cheers!

Check the wheels for center alignment. I heard that the wheels/rims are not molded 100% centered. I've got this kit on order so I'll be watching your build with interest. The cockpit certainly has a lot of parts, but I don't mind. Just like with a model engine, it makes for more overall detail in my opinion. I built the Airfix 1/48 P-40B, and that one was a bit "fiddly" in the cockpit area too, but it turned out great.

Right on, thanks! I'll keep an eye on the wheels. I've completed the engine (it will feature in the next video) and it looks nice! Cheers!

Thank you! I rarely lose parts on the concrete floor in my workshop. This one sprung away with some velocity. I didn't hear it land and couldn't narrow down the search area enough to find it 🙄.

Hey Jon! I've had an eye on this kit and will try to buy it. For me the fiddly and high part count is the atttaction since i like a lot more to build the kits than to paint them. Why did you chose the basic and not the advance? Is the brass included not worth the extra money? Thanks for doing a more indepth built on this one!
@jonsmodelkitreview4624
@jonsmodelkitreview4624 2 месяца назад
Great question! I typically like to build the kits closed up, and the "basic" kit has more than enough detail in that configuration for me. I'm sure the "advanced" kit will be well worth the cost for super detailers. Cheers!

NOTE… when I drop something on my floor It’s like the BOTTOM of the OCEAN…. I lay a flash light flat on the floor, most times the part you loose will cast a SHADOW…. Try it
@jonsmodelkitreview4624
@jonsmodelkitreview4624 2 месяца назад
I did that, I crawled around, swiping my hands over the floor, I moved things, etc. But, to no avail! The part was so small that I didn't hear it land and couldn't concentrate my search area. 😳

Wow that cockpit tub could be a model in itself! What is the total parts count on this model? I would think this is more in line with a 1/32 or 1/24 scale for detail parts. Seems parts heavy for a 1/48. But wow that is some great detail! Thanks
@jonsmodelkitreview4624
@jonsmodelkitreview4624 2 месяца назад
Right on! This kit may have more parts in it than any other 1/48 fighter I've built, though some Eduard kits might rival it. Plenty of great-looking detail, though. I've been working on it more since this video. Cheers!
