In this model kit review, I am looking at the Revell (ICM) 1/48 Bf 109F (kit no. 04656). We'll be looking at the finished kit, the instructions, the surface detailing, the interior detail, the transparencies, the decals, potential problem areas and my solutions in those areas, aftermarket items used (Eduard seatbelts and HobbyCraft wheels), and finally, I'll be giving my conclusions at the end. I built this kit at the same time with Eduard's Bf 109 F. I will compare that kit with this kit in this review. This kit has lots of competition, but is it still worth building? Let's find out together!

Man, she is pretty. Excellent work. I had a lot of fun with the last revell ME 109 ..it was their G4.. Whenever I see an me 109 I remember building the 1/32 kits...working landing gear, opening canopies...lol yeah I'm old..

Right on! I got back into the hobby building the Monogram Classics series with the working gear, etc. Good memories!

I built this kit some times ago and added it pretty much details made from scratch (on the engine and in the cockpit. I also had issue here and there with parts that don't mach very well or with big gap to fill but in the end i really enjoyed to build it and i'm rather happy with the results but i confirm that it clearly isn't an easy build. I reproduced the F2 piloted by Hans "Hassi" Hahn. Have a nice day !

Very cool! Building the Eduard Bf109 F right beside this build really makes it seem crude in comparison. I'm looking forward to completing the Eduard and displaying them side-by-side. Cheers!

Fantastic build Jon! I like how you fixed the engine cover seam. She looks like a decent model to build minor imperfections withstanding. Definitely a model to help improve one’s skills. I’ve only built the Tamiya 1/48 109e…which I loved (outside the decals) but again you did a great job here! Thanks

Thank you! There were points in the build process where I thought about binning this one. I'm surprised by how much I like the finished kit but I can't really recommend it on any criteria other than price. The Tamiya Bf-109E is a breeze construction-wise compared to this kit. Cheers!

GOOD MORNING ☀️… 0700 hours OHIO time… JON, you make things look so easy, your build and reviews go smoothly… I appreciate when you swap parts to dress a kit up… ANYTHING TO RAISE THE LEVEL… I could never tell you made the Engine Cowling Hinge, I noticed that detail right away EXCELLENT!!!!! Very nice looking model 😊… I’ve watched the PASTEL How To video a few times, it really HELPS, for me it’s PRACTICE and more PRACTICE… I’m thinking on a simple MONOGRAM kit to build, and keep working on that Technique… Glad to see you getting more Subscribers and Viewers… You have my LIKE 👍 Have a great weekend… CHRIS 🇺🇸

Thanks, Chris! I really appreciate the feedback. I love nice kits that come with extra parts that I can use on other builds. It is a free way to improve a kit. Have a great weekend!

I also needed to add some plasticcard for the top cowling. I liked the old airfix bf-109 more than this newer ixmt/revell offering. Added bonus is that airfix is almost 100% accurate. This one almost ended up in the plastic recycling bin. Yes, in europe we recycle our plastic. Also Revell is a German based company: swastika's are prohibited in Germany.

Right on! This one came close to getting binned as well. In the end, I'm glad I didn't. But I still can't recommend this kit on any basis other than low cost. Cheers!

I've built several Hasegawa Bf 109 F/G/Ks (all the same basic kit) and it's a good enough value that I'd have to seriously question whether others are worth the premium.

The Eduard 109s (F/G/K) turn out beautifully and are a big step up from the others with regard to interior and surface detail. However, the Hasegawa kits are pain-free builds that can be turned out well. Cheers!

Hello Jon, yesterday I wrote a comment but it was not published, well here I write again. Regarding the model, you have made it excellent, very nice finishes and colors, I must say that the use of the marks that simulate the rivets have turned out great. I still have a couple of these ICMs to assemble, I bought them very cheap, now they have gone up and the price is already equal to even an Eduard weekender or a Hasegawa. In my experience with this specific mold, I had problems with the engine and the placement of the covers did not fit, in addition to the low joint of the fuselage, behind the wings, a depression forms, I don't know if it happened to you, the superficial details Although they are rare, the very soft plastic allows the riveting to be worked easily. If I compare it with the Zvezda f4, the latter is much better in every way, so I still have to assemble the Eduard. Greetings friend and until the next video

Thanks, Francisco! I agree that the nose area of this kit is difficult to assemble in the closed position without modification. It needs an engine hinge that must be fabricated. As you mentioned, the oil cooler doesn't fit well either. I haven't looked at the Zvezda Bf109 F. Thanks for confirming that it is the better kit of these two. I don't remember an issue with the lower fuselage, but earlier ICM kits often have quality control issues (mold glitches) with the plastic parts. Cheers!

Excellent work! I made the mistake of stating mine just as I was finishing Eduards G2. I started it and pretty quickly lost interest and it served as a paint mule for quite some time. Nice to hear that the decals are good, I still have them so I'll probably use them on some Eduard over trees.

The finished look of the kit is just great. But I do think that I would give this kit a pass do to the quality issues. Especially since there is better options out there.

As always the finished is awesome, the white and yellow are difficult colors to work with but you could never tell by the way you apply them. For some reason I'm have trouble with the Vallejo washes. I experimented with using a brown wash on some 1/48 crew members That really increased the depth but I sealed it with a gloss finish and that diluted the brown wash by quite a bit. The figures are still OK, but I'm concerned on using one the washes on an aircraft then losing it by using a gloss or satin finish. Maybe the problem was the gloss spray was just a standard art gloss spray and not compatible. Any suggestions ? Thanks, Bob.

Thanks, Bob! I use a homemade black wash. It consists of flat black acrylic paint thinned with water with a few drops of dish soap. It doesn't change color with clear coats. I haven't used the Vallejo wash, so I'm honestly not sure what's happening there. Cheers!

@@jonsmodelkitreview4624 thanks Jon, I'll give it a shot, as the old saying from computer days - " its probably operator error" :-) I think it may be the gloss coat I was using , good thing I have paint mules but that stash is starting to get depleted Cheers Bob.

What panel wash do you use, if not a commercial brand, what dilution do you do?

Great question Jakob! I go over my wash formula in my latest video. It isn't super precise but it gives you a good idea of how I make it. You can check that out here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-u9tuh8Ezamw.html
