Time for another teardown - this time it is a faithful appliance that has gone waaay past its useful lifespan, so let's take a loot at how this thing works!

The Eckerd logo on the device definitely dates it to around 2004 or earlier, before they were absorbed by CVS and Brooks. The stores that remained Eckerds after that point were rebranded with "pharmacy" in a red capsule below the word Eckerd to align more with the then-current Brooks Pharmacy logo. By 2007 there were no Eckerd or Brooks pharmacies left as they were sold to Rite Aid which itself eventually folded.

Always wondered how these things worked! Very clever packaging.

That is super cool, I love how tiny it is. Maybe Miniature Machines can be a series?

It's amazing that a really small motor and pump like that can put so much pressure on your arm.

You didn't show how the pressure is measured. Is it done by strain gauges or by a mems sensor ?

I also just did a quick search and it looks like the last Eckerd’s were phased out in 2007 so it probably was a 2004 date code. Crazy how time flies.

I have an old one somebody was getting rid of which is a larger unit and detachable cuff. It's definitely older, it has very yellowed plastic, DIP ICs, and perhaps most interestingly, a miniature chain printer to log results if desired. But the "action" part is the same: one air pump, one release solenoid valve, and one release valve. The only possible difference is a constant slow bleed valve used during the actual measurement.

I wonder what acts as the korotkov microphone??? Maybe the coil??? On second thought it's likely combined with the pressure sensor. Fran you should have cracked that open too...

There is a condensor mic, or electret mic to listen for K sound, the ucomputer will process all these details.

Come on, Fran, what is inside a rolling pump. Doesn't sound like a reciprocating pump. Let's see inside!

I haven't seen one with only 2 pistons but a very common design has a rubber mat with three chambers. An eccentric thing on the motor shaft compresses each in turn.

Obviously not in this case, but in others,try to use hot air on plastic electronics that are snapped and glued together for a much easier time, and you can put it back together! Not gonna repurpose this as a wristwatch that plays doom? Lol

I once bought one of those wrist cuff blood pressure monitors, the Harbor Freight special. I thought it worked fine but some months later when I took it to the doctor’s office I found out it was consistently showing about 10 to 15 points lower than actual. So, while I thought my BP was good, it was actually elevated. Total junk. I switched to an arm cuff version that’s much more accurate.

You would also be ammazed at the many parts in a modern coffee maker using a k cup. Pump valves and safety sensors. Vs the old heater coil and valve drip coffee maker. The coffee k cup maker also has screws and multiple hidden clips, for a repair you want to release and not make too many pry marks.

When I saw this alert in my email I got so confused because I happened to just purchase a blood pressure cuff online and I thought this was a confirmation email. Quite an odd coincidence. 😂

Interesting gadget. I like to rehab old stuff. Last week I spent $10 on mini hearing aid batteries to use a tester for automotive fuses. A replacement kit would cost $26.

Really nice tech. I'm curious what's inside a blood pressure watch. (omron made a model or two) and they have a small upper-arm blood pressure monitor too.

I had an Omron brand mini blood pressure monitor like yours, it suddenly stopped working. Opened it up (two screws), checked the clock oscillator for its CPU and it was working. Could not see anything else wrong by inspection. Possibly inbuilt obsolescence?

How do suppose it senses when the blood has stopped flowing and then starts again?
@MartysRandomStuff
@MartysRandomStuff 3 месяца назад
All these work pretty much the same, the pressure sensor is so sensitive the unit can read your pulse in the pressure data. Every time your heart pumps there's a tiny spike in the pressure in the cuff, when the pressure in the cuff gets high enough to stop blood flow the spikes go away.
@sholimz
@sholimz 3 месяца назад
The machine is set to pump until 200mmHg, then the solenoid opens to release the cuff pressure slowly at a fixed rate until you remove the cuff or until 0mmHg, meanwhile a microphone will detect the korotkov sound, microcomputer will register and display the diastolic and systolic and pulse.

Thanks, Fran. 🎉😊🙏 "Bladders, diaphragms, and rubber parts." Indeed, curious workmanship. I believe most along the lines of do-hickys, widgets, and gizmos. Just say'n. This video, and your others, make me feel I'm gonna get in trouble if Mom finds out I took this apart. You must be very careful not to slip and scratch the screw heads so they can't tell.😮😂
