Thanks for your kind words guys! Do you agree with my opinions? :) If you would like to submit your miniatures please subscribe, and send them through to submit@artis-opus.com
This was great! :) would love to see more, maybe do some non 40k or warhammer minis (if any are sent of course) after all mini paintings is far more than warhammer :)
@@Himle_ you are right in some occasions other rim colors look great. for example gold works or the „invisible“ rim where colors from the base (only the colors, not the texture) extend on the rim. but for an army for example i would go mostly with black, it just looks better than brown und works every time.
That was my Crimson Paladin. Thank you for the constructive criticism! Seems like easy things to correct to help improve my models. Also that was my first time ever making a sludge base 😀
Love absolutely love the constructive and genuinely helpful criticism! Too often people are way hyper critical and harsh on other painters. We all start at the bottom and work upwards. Keep up the great work!
Love it! Just getting back into modeling after 50 years. Learned a lot with your videos and the critiquing makes me learn more. Thanks again for sharing!
@Artis Opus Big Fan of your how to paint videos, they have been helping better myself as a painter and making the hobby much easier with the "drybrush method". I would love to see you tackle one of my favorite space marine chapters that doesn't seem to get much love these days, Grey Knights. I would love to see how you tackle their blue steel armor and weapons and take your unique take on it. Would really love to see a video of it. I would also like to see a how to paint video for my second favorite, Crimson Fists via drybrush as well.
Thanks so much for your support, buddy! We'll definitely get to grey knights at some point soon. I actually have some of their infantry assembled for this purpose but really haven't properly appreciated how much detail is EVERYWHERE on these figures. I am getting some of their larger models assembled now for this reason.✌😊
I'm no artist, however I love that you've given feedback applicable to the level of the painter and the way you've given constructive criticism in a helpful and positive way. I'd look forward to seeing more videos like this.
@@ArtisOpus I did, seems 'Paint your rims back' should be your catchphrase! I'm really liking these videos, it shows all skill levels can improve whilst not expecting everyone to be as technically skilled as yourself so it's a brilliantly accessible video.
I base my dudes with a warm brown if the main color is cool and a cool brown if the main color is warm. It's neutral and doesn't draw the eye but it I think it complements and balances the color palette nicely. I also try to work the base color into a small detail on the model somewhere like a leather bag or scabbard or something.
@@Dagenham_Swish I hadn't thought of that. My models have a satin varnish that kind of clashes with the very matte basing materials and I bet a gloss rim would make it seem less harsh. BTW I do Rhinox Hide with dark angels. The base looks black until you really look at it and the models look black until you really look at them. It's a cool effect if a bit subtle.
@@PoofyKittyPants noted, I need to expand my paint range anyway 😆 I also do my Space Wolf paldrons with a gloss varnish which really makes them pop in contrast to the matte varnish the rest of the mini is done in. Dunno if it would work for you but thought I'd throw it out the 👍
Thanks for including mine in your video. Always intimidating to post your work to someone else but great to get honest feedback from someone who I respect their work.
I’m tempted to pixelate my bases in my photos next time. Strangely enough the brand I subbed in this video is the only one I’ve gone with non black bases. Started when I first painted a bunch up and didn’t have any black so I just used bone as a primer until I bought some. That was 2 years ago and now I have around 200-300 fallout minis.
I sincerely hope my models get a look from you even more so after this video. The feedback you gave was so brilliant whether detailed touches to improve an already lovely model, or fundamental approaches that will influence every model you paint. Thanks for such an amazing video and here's hoping the community has shown a desire for more! 👊
Glowing blue: White base - thin layers until solid white. Glaze fluoro blue - 5 light layers until bright. White highlights - thin and light on coils. Glaze blue ink - 1:1 Lahmian to Vallejo blue ink. Glaze until happy. 👍 Also, Steel Legion Drab is best rim colour 👌
Great video + fun format. Lookin' forward to more! Let's see if i've finnished my Libriarian then :) As for base rims other then black. Well, sometimes it's fun to paint the whole base, not just the top^^
Dunno about always black rims, I go brown as it contrasts nicely with my Space Wolf palette. What I do recommend is gloss varnishing the base rims (and paldrons)
Really liked that video, some excellent submissions there. One other tip that might help level up these paint jobs. When blocking in colours, don't brush over paint that's in the middle of drying. You'll end up with lumps, streaks and craters. Hit the area, then leave it alone until it's completely dry. Then hit it again if necessary.
If you took a very light yellow brown wash over white armor for the white marine then use a subtle white highlight build up might help the first marine?
This was awesome. Wish I'd have known about it, i recently used some techniques from one of your videos with some ideas of my own to paint a 'mini', I'd have submitted it. Definitely up for the next one.
Great video bud. Loved this, I also have come back to hobby after 20+ years. Thanks to lockdown. It’s going okay and videos like this have been invaluable at helping me to get stuck back in. Thanks again and more like this would be great. Oh and I always black base rim 🤣
I was unaware some put so much thought in base trim colors, although most of mine are black, only have 1 army with blue ones and one other with several colors for squad markings.
I dunno if I'm sad or glad that mine didn't get shown! I hope you do more of these, it's really good to get some constructive criticism to help you improve, personally I'm waaaay too critical of my own stuff, which is why I hardly ever get anything finished!!
You've only seen 50% of the minis I reviewed, so there's still a chance😊Thanks so much, I really enjoyed it and I am looking forward to doing it again too🤩
I'm on team goblin green bases, yes, I'm that old and I have no plans to change my superior ways. My brushes are also that old, I have no intention to replace them either. I am a fan of your Tintin shirt.
That comment on base paints kinda reminds me of the issues I have with scale 75, which generally had pretty thin coverage for me. Is a "stronger" base paint all I need?
Very possibly dude, scale have some with crazy coverage (kalahari orange is nuts), but a lot are helpfully mixed for blending, so don't 'block in' as efficiently
Great video! Are you planning on making basecoating brushes, that are bigger and better at storing paint that might be slightly thicker? If so I would absolutely love them, and definitely buy them.
I will say black base rim is my preference but a solid opaque color done well on the rim is more important than the color .... it makes the mini look more complete.
Hey, I was hoping you could give me a few pointers. I've been trying out my new series D brushes for the last couple days, but I can't seem to get the hang of it. I'm in the UK, sitting in my kitchen, using citadel base/layer paints, for reference. My process at the moment is too use dampening pad on brush, pick up some paint, work it into bristles...and then when I go to the model it's dried instantly. So I go back to the dampening pad, and it doesn't seem to help, so I add more paint...rinse repeat. Is it a case of, I should be making my brush wetter to begin with, or adding much more paint to the brush? Thank you in advance! :)
Hey brandy, check out the complete guide and airbrush smooth blends video, they're really extensively detailed to help with exactly this, watch them both though and see if it helps, if not give me a shout on our next video with the specific issue (if it's the same/different) and I'll do my best to get you sorted! Big love dude, thanks for the support :)
ohh mine wasn't picked :p next time I will leave the base rim not black on purpose ahahahah. Anyway solid advise and feedback that I can definitely use even if it was others mini. Looking forward to the next one!
You've only seen 50% of the minis I reviewed, so there's still a chance😊Thanks so much, I really enjoyed it and I am looking forward to doing it again too🤩
btw..that really big Thing is not part of a diorama...its the Mirelurk Queen and the small guy is a scientist from the tabletop Fallout Wasteland warefare..
This is something I am not very experienced at, unfortunately. I'd say start at mid-tone, use colours carefully that have very good coverage and then use an edge highlight to each of the colours to hide any slips or mistakes.😊
@@ArtisOpus I mean I don’t think I am making my life easy picking the scythes. Black arms and legs and yellow everywhere else. But I’m getting more comfortable and confident with each one I finish. Almost got a kill team painted.
This is a really cool idea and a nice way to interact with the viewer base! Not me though, I think I went a bit overboard, I couldn't decide which model to photograph so there were lots, and they all look largely the same, and they came attached to a very long waffley email, in which I probably managed to completely circum-navigate the point, that's happening a lot recently, I will keep it to one photo and a brief message next time, and blame everything on the fact that I have been living all on me tod for far too long now
Hey Simon! DW about it mate, I definitely weirded out some baristas during lockdown months when they asked me 'how's it going?' and I replied properly :D Your google link was protected, so we couldn't see any of your minis! Ronan's handled the emails to keep my reactions genuine, so I have unfortunately (fortunately? :D) missed your waffles! Big love dude
@@ArtisOpus count yourself lucky, I re-read my email, god knows what the point was I was trying to make, it reads like the ramblings of a mad man! At this point, I'm pretty sure that's exactly what it was tbh...
This was great. Always fun to see other peoples work and just like asking a "stupid" question in the classroom, there are almost certainly others who can benefit from these questions being answered. Now do I swallow my own social anxiety and submit one of my own or simply continue to admire from afar? (rest assured my minis all have black rims ;P)
But they're not though... it just happens most people choose crappy colours for non-black bases. Some models look better with a colour, though, like Mars bases with a dark reddish-brown. Notice, the Tech Priest didn't have a black base and it was not commented on. It just works better for some minis to not use it.
@@AllThingsCubey My rule of thumb is that the base color should be the darkest, or near darkest color on my model, and should blend well with the color of the terrain. This whole only back base thing is bizarre. It's like demanding every painting should have the same color frame.
@@Kelseyisaacheinrichs Agreed. A dark shade that fits well with the colour of the terrain, looks neat, and doesn't attract the eye is ideal. Solid black draws the eye too much in most cases, and I think it's more attractive to have different armies with different base textures, terrains, and colour schemes. For stonework bases, a slate/ indigo grey would be my go-to, in the same way a muted red/brown works for Mars bases, and a flat golden earth tone works for grassy bases.
Really big thanks for the feedback on my Tau, I definitely agree with working on getting some red into my Ethereals robe! P.s. Im keeping the rims white though... Sorry 😆
Are you planning on reviewing the miniatures of everyone who submitted in the future, or just some people? I submitted but didn't hear anything back and wasn't in the video. Thanks!
All the high-end brands have great coverage paints. I am particularly enjoying Pro acryl from Monument at the moment though. I use both Cult of Paint airbrushes, they're outstanding🤩 store.artis-opus.com/collections/airbrushes
Couple of things. Don't really agree with your sentiment on base rims. Black is not the only colour that sets the base off and provides contrast, any colour can do this depending on the palette of the model. As an example, my first examples of base colouring were Orks. At that point in time, 90's , I painted the base with no basing material and for Orks I did British racing green on the top and very dark brown on the rim. Not only did it provide contrast but the brown gave the impression the whole base had been excised from the ground. I have moved on from then using various mediums for basing. The other point is, and this applies to a number of people I have watched, rust or corrosion is not a good thing for some factions in the 40K universe. Especially in terms of a Tech Priest Dominus who belongs to the Mechanicus faction. These people believe in the machine spirit and their equipment has prayers recited to it in line with its daily maintenance and cleaning. A senior figure not only maintains its own, (Sexuality is no longer a thing for these "humans") body and mechanics. It has a hoard of minions continually servicing, cleaning and revitalising its body. So no rust, verdigris or other rot would infest the minions of the Adeptus Mechanicus. So dusty or dirty from the most recent engagement maybe. But never decrepit or rotted, your metalics are more likely to have the dull sheen of oils and lubricants. But of course that is just the lore and GW does encourage creativity.
Hey, Stephen, I can see the perspective - check out #4 react video to see me begrudgingly admit that one of the features mini's brown rims make sense in the context of his army/display board :D I do still think black rims is the correct choice, I'd cite the majority of Golden Demon entries a a pretty good source for this, these guys are the creme de la creme of painters and black rims are in the majority for sure! You're completely right about the fluff stuff, I touch on that often when I give the advice, I'm always coming from a completely aesthetic perspective, always banging on about contrast, and it is a great way to sneak it in, I know little to nothing about the lore, especially where 40k is concerned!
Black rims have their place but so often I feel it makes a mini look unfinished ie they forgot to do edge. Eg thatvlast one the bike base in grey looked good the black rim looked unfinished. Couple later ones had dark bases with black rims looked great though
I don't paint my base rim black, I give each of my units a different coloured rim so I remember which figure goes in which group. Yep, I'm getting old.
NO MARTIN! :( Just kidding, I've done the same with different coloured flower tufts on my bases, my facourite however is little plastic rings/elastic bands which I just hang over minis heads to help distinguish similar squads, etc :)
@@ArtisOpus 😱 I can't believe I didn't think of that! Yoink 😉 By the way, my wife got me a set of your M series brushes yesterday (to replace my apparently fake Raphael brushes I got from Amazon) as an early birthday present (she also got me a set of Scale 75 Fantasy and Game paints, aye, she's amazing!) and you now have a customer for life. They're amazing brushes. Angel Giraldez recommended them to me on Instagram, I figured if he uses them, I can't go wrong. I was right. My wife got them from Element games, they must have dropped the box as the outer white box had a damaged corner and the inner wooden box was damaged too but not enough for me to return, the structure is still sound so I'm not worried. Thanks for the videos you make and for releasing such great products.
Any chance of a vid comparing some skin tone sets? I have no idea which one to go with. Scale75 have: "Flesh Paint Set" and "Velvet Skin". AK Interactive have: "Flesh and Skin Colors" and "Human Flesh Tones". Vallejo have: "Face Painting Set" and "Fleshtones". Vallejo also has the 16 bottle "Face and Skin Tones" set. But I think that might be overkill for a noob.
Hey dude, great idea for a video! Personally, for me the AK set is the easiest to use of the ones you've listed, they're all really good paints though😊
@@ArtisOpus That mean you might make a vid on it? Aye, they all have similarities, but they also each have something different about them. As someone new to painting skin tones, I have no idea which set to go with. Which AK set is the one you think is easiest? "Flesh and Skin Colors"? or "Human Flesh Tones"?
@@RainMakeR_Workshop Human Flesh Tones looks very solid, but I honestly wouldn't worry too much, the most important thing with paints is practising brush control, etc. and either of theirs will be perfect😊
I am really new to the hobby and these comments are so helpful because I am having ALL of the same issues, but my biggest problem is my palette... I am using a really cheap basic palette but my paints dry on there so fast! does anyone have any recommendations on what I should use? Thanks.
@@ArtisOpus hey thanks for replying, As for humidity just the usual south London fluctuations and my house is never particularly warm. To be honest what I have been using is a cheap 5 quid kids palette. I have seen wet palettes recommended but I notice in your videos your palette almost looks like a piece of slate. Thanks.
@@r3plicntgaming372 I genuinely don't understand as a Brit where the issues would be coming from then. If your palette has dippy wells the paint should be staying workable for a decent amount of time, maybe you're just not putting enough in. Are you adding water?
@@ArtisOpus I am adding water but it may be the amount that I am using. I am trying not to be wasteful and maybe I haven't found the right balance of paint to pull out.
