Realistic RUSTY ARMOUR - How to paint weathered armour

In this video we're covering how to paint aged, worn, rusty armour - the rust is actually optional, as is the degree of age you suggest (just wash more/less or highlight more/less). It is perfect for painting chainmail, also!
The video is packed with painting tips and tricks, and the method is extremely flexible, allowing you to fit it to whatever plan you have for your scheme.
This technique is basically at the zero/minimal skill level, as it's extremely forgiving, and very hard to get wrong, as long as you follow the steps. Mistakes are hidden by following stages, and very suddenly you jump from something which looks 'OK' to something that looks amazing!

Some acrylic glaze medium added to contrasts or inks can help combat them being less controllable on metallic base coats.
@MrTelecasterIV
@MrTelecasterIV 2 года назад
If the paint isn't "sticking" to the surface and has the tendency to "run" away just ad a tiny drop of normal dish soap. This will release the surface tension on the model. You can also dip the model in some soapy water. Try to paint pure water on a primed model and then add a a drop of soap, you will see the difference.

@@ArtisOpus I normally use another method, but it only works for all-around rusty armour: basepainting with rust color, heavy drybrushing with iron-metallic, washing with fleshshade (the orangey hue works really good here). And if I want a really old, rotten look (undead), or something like rusty cast iron (which is more of a grey), I make the heavy drybrushing with a medium-dark gray, and then a very light drybrush with iron, possibly some iron strippled on the weapon edges (+shade). But I will try this on a fitting character model!

GREAT video! Which Color did you mix with metallic gold for the base color of the gold version? And did you also use Seraphim Sepia for the golden one? I don´t have any colors yet and would like to know which ones to get. Oh and in the first part of the video it seems like you use Nuln Oil, let it dry, Nuln Oil, let it dry, then Sepia with a bit Nuln Oil and let this dry- finish. But in the end of the video I understand it like you used another fourth layer with Nuln Oil, after the Sepia layer. Which one was correct for the golden version? Would be so happy about an answer!
@ArtisOpus
@ArtisOpus Год назад
Hey dude, I didn't use metallic gold :) I mixed incubi darkness with the silver though, if that's what you're after. Yes, I used the same sequence for both :) I didn't do a 4th nuln layer, which is why it stayed looking brighter :D Hope that helps! Any more questions ask is in another comment :)

for the less bluish leg... did you just keep going adding washes even though you said it didnt settle in the flat spaces as good as with the blue one to achieve those results shown in the end? I ask cause i actually like that one better and plan on doing Silver base coat (pure) > black wash > black wash > sepia wash > black wash > silver drybrush/edgehighlight by the way... i dont have sepia... do you know of any contrast paint which would do the same job please? :D thank you for the great idea!
@ArtisOpus

Yeah man, it's part of the joy of the technique, it sorts itself out :). Mix whatever is your favourite colour with medium and experiment a little, it won't be exactly the same, but should be close! You could even drop in a little brown paint, as long as you mix well!

The darker colour scheme is good for the armies of the dead, like armour worn by Oleksander Halgrim from Warhammer Quest: Cursed City. The lighter armour rust would make a more gritter scheme for that worn by Emelda Braskov.

Another way to solve the initial problem with the metalic spray is to bosh some matt varnish over the base coat

@@ArtisOpus any spray varnish, you can use munitorium spray but putting it on a pre heated radiator straight after you give it a light coat works well, it dries too quickly to settle into a satin finish so remains matte and as such has the micro texture required to stop it from repelling the wash is formed.
