I want to design a Painting Journal to keep track of mixes over the course of painting an army or force, I have done a video about painting journals before [link a bit lower] but I wanted something a bit more official to go with my channel theme. So this is the first look at what I've got so far and I want everyone's feedback on what might help to make it better.

I like the layout, formatting, and dimensions of the booklet. I also enjoy that you have a notes page. That is definitely an idea that I'm going to yoink. But like others, I don't think that I would find much use in the list building portion (I do play OPR Fantasy Skirmish, but I'm a tree hater who prints up a new list after I've made changes to my army on the web builder). I use a spiral bound book at the moment, which I really enjoy (I took heavy inspiration from your video on keeping a painting journal a while back). I don't think that I would use a small booklet, as I like to have everything all in once place. But I do understand your idea of trying to make it a portable or easy to store painting/army list journal that can easily be kept with the miniatures.

I like this format a lot and I'll keep an eye out for the kickstarter. One minor style quibble, I like the hand drawn theme but I feel like you're losing some space between text boxes that could make or break my ability to write legibly in the space given. They could still be hand drawn but especially on your color swatch pages I feel like a grid instead of a field of separate boxes would help my clumsy self read what I wrote later.

I might have the outline of the cells a bit thick at the moment, do you think a bit more white space inside the cell would help your issue here? The cells do certainly favor writing in caps over just normal writing, which I should have done in the examples.

Hi! I really like the idea of a painting journal. I have been keeping one myself for a few years now, but it's very basic. A4-sized page with just a few details. However I'm now very triggered to expand this drastically. The concept of small journals with detailed pages per project or army or game system, ... appeals to me. As mentioned by others, the gaming side doesn't do much for me because I'm a painter in the first place and I already have a journal for my gaming adventures. I really think that painting journals could also be a way to keep you motivated as well. So maybe it's an idea to work with checklists, challenges, rewards,... Maybe a frame where you can stick a photo of your finished models? I really think there's lots and lots of potential for a good journalling system. I really see the added value of this. One thing I would advise however is to keep the lay-out tidy and clean. I find your lay-out to be rather busy or even messy for now, but that's personal taste of course. But I REALLY like what you are doing. Keep up the good work and thanks for the inspiration! I'm very curious to see this project develop further.

I like the idea of doing two separate styles of journals. One for wargamers and one for just painters. All the army stat pages are absolutely useless to me but having extra, larger swatch pages would be great. For the wargamers, perhaps adding in a couple pages with generic, blank paperdoll style figures people can use as references for the colour schemes so they can have a visual indicator of exactly which colour was used where. Paint-by-numbers style, boots are colour #1, top is colour #8, skin tone is colour #5 etc. If the figure has a sash, a hat or any other additional item not already present, paint one on the paperdoll and make a note of the colours used.

I like the idea, but I wouldn't want to use it for anything other than painting. Having more swatches/notes is way more valuable than army lists.

Since I don't play wargames, I find the army listing to be unnecessary. The swatch pages are good, but the page layout looks very cluttered with all the map lines. If you simplify the design, it works better. Checkboxes are always appreciated, and you should add a cheat sheet. The gradient explanation was hard to understand at first glance.

That's a good point, maybe having two versions? One for wargamers and one for painters? The one for painters having more mixing grids instead of army lists? Have you though about extra pages or booklets as part of Kickstarter stretch goals?

I actually did think that I should have some kinda 'guide' on how to use the booklet, but I didn't want to include it within the pages of the book for room sake. So I was thinking an external page that has that information.

3 out of 5 so far. I don't think the game stats are that necessary for this journal I would use it just for getting my miniatures ready. Some other things that could be useful would be: a list area to write out the paint (brand, type, identification numbers or what ever you need) that you use for the army. Room to sketch (draw) out notes wold be nice because models and armies can be very detailed and just drawing notes for painting methods could help. A space for your basing recipe would help for reproducible results. Bonus point you make a one with a sci-fi look to it (like make the X for swatches look like a target reticle or something) in stead of the pirate map look. Over this looks very helpful but I am just a guy who is looking in to painting miniatures so take it for what it is worth.

A paint index is a really good idea, I'll just have to find the balance between too many lines for the amount of paints generally used verses not enough. I might be able to do some kind of Sci-Fi version, right now just making sure I get the layout right first. How much room would be needed to sketch? Would the lower 4th of the notes pages be enough of would you want like a half sheet?
@joshuanaul5961
@joshuanaul5961 Год назад
Thanks for the reply. I'm more of a drawer and would like half a sheet but a 4th of the page would probably be more realistically for most if any other painters. @@PaintmanJourneying

It's an interesting idea, but I don't paint armies at all. I don't play wargames. So, this is not for me as I'm not the target audience. That said, I know lists change, units change, models change. I know none of that would be useful to me. I do have certain paint "formulas" I use for different materials (color combinations for leather or non-metallic gold, etc) that would be good to catalog at some point. I don't think I'd find a journal like this useful since I don't do armies and typically do one off display models. I would find better use from a larger journal and probably more free form than this. A blank watercolor notebook would probably be fine for me, honestly.

I prefer an empty sheet and not be constrained by a template. I record all my experiments, mistakes, dead ends etc, and I find that free form works best for that. Once I have a solution I am happy with I just write “Gold - same as Empire Spearmen” for a new unit. That’s just me though, this format might fit others better.

Even as an OPR player, I would find limited use for a built in army list. I put everything in excel or word or use the OPR Army builder to keep everything clean and neat and then either keep a copy on a digital device or print it out. My hand writing is awful. For painting however, this is a very nice idea so I can recall what colors I used. For myself I would change the army list to who made the model. Be it I bought it from some Manufacturer such as Atlantic Games, or I got it off of MyMiniFactory and then what that model name is or what part number it is. In case I ever want to add additional models to my unit or I end up having to replace one because of some mishap this would be in the same place as how and what I used to paint the other models in the unit.

I love the idea, but personally i like having all of my stuff in one book (or in my case a couple spiral bounds now) as its easier to locate past recipes if needed. I love your formatting ideas though

It might be possible to do a large or semi-larger book as well since I'm doing each layout as a single page it should be possible to add more of all of it infinitum. Might have to think about doing two versions, one for painters only, and one for painter gamers.

Its a great idea..im honestly suprised there aren’t already painter orientated notebooks, maybe other parts or art world do?

In the mixing grid, use black and white stripes so we can see how the color looks over black as well

I actually I can't believe I forgot this in the first place. I'll make sure to correct that!
@mokko759

That is a brilliant idea, actually. Edit: On the swatch page, if he makes the dashed lines thicker, people could paint right over the dashes so you can see exactly how it goes over black through grey through white, since the little dashes already have that greyscale gradient going on.
