just bought one, and i am happy But i suggest Arturia to maybe do some tutorials from zero in order to do step by step a complete video on how to set up the device from the moment of installation until the end and then finally quickly show how to start a song. From what i have been reading, i m not he only one to struggle, and im not a newbie i already have hardware. my knobs wont work!
totally true. The learning curve is pretty steep, and not intuitive. By default, when you hit pads, it starts recording loops. If you don't want that and just browse sounds, well, good luck with finding how to deactivate that function. Serious tutorials are needed !
Do you ever get your knobs to work? I just got mine and couldn't either. edit: it worked, just had to look thoroughly through every button on there, the layout is quite confusing and yes, we need a thorough tutorial. I doub't i can milk every feature out of this thing just because how confusing everything is; If I don't know what to look for I probably won't find it.
exactly!! it seems these videos are more for publicity than actually teaching how to use the device!! I just bought my first midi and have no clue how anything works!!
I’d appreciate help - for some reasons when I record there are the notes without actual sound (no preset/nothing) I run it standalone but heard it’s not the problem 😢Can anybody help please?
“How to use Ableton” Just use it, then it works. Cool how about showing us how to get to the point where there’s actual track options and hitting record does anything.
I took about a week to unbox this thing and learn how to install everything and use Ableton live from scratch (ZERO music production experience) I got the Arturia minifuse 2 mic and headphone kit from sweetwater along with the minilab 3. Then I excitedly hooked everything up and downloaded all the things including ableton live lite. I ran out of steam about 2AM watching videos like this not being able to figure out what was going on so I just started watching any and all videos the next week to try to figure it out. Finally I got a notebook and pen and watched TAETRO's Ableton Live for beginners - and now everything is beginning to make sense. I still feel like there are key steps missing in this video and it should have been a bit longer and more descriptive - like a real-time follow along.
I went through exactly the same steps as you! TAETRO's videos are so good aren't they? The tutorials from Arturia are crap! You end up feeling like you wanna give up as the steps aren't clearly explained. @arturia should defintely re-record them with the same people but maybe also include step-by-step written instructions as well.
@@STORMBREAKER_250 go to @taetro s tutorial. I am not even kidding I got a notebook and took notes, hand drawing out the thing and lines to what each button does. And if you don't know how to use a DAW there's a whole other learning curve. So if you don't know or have a DAW, get the free Ableton live lite and watch tutorials on that as well. Good luck!!
Arturia, where is the link to "the FAQ video on how to set it up without it" - i.e. on how to set up DAW Integration for an earlier version of DAW (Live 10 specifically)?
@@maxpower6276 I contacted Arturia support and got this answer: --------------------------- --> Ableton provided the script for MiniLab 3 only from version 11.2 and above It is available on the provided Ableton Live Lite license with MiniLab 3. --> If you can't upgrade to this version for several reasons, you will have to configure the MiniLab as any other MIDI device in Live 10. Please use the Mackie Control protocol as shown below, the Start/Stop/Record and Loop functions of the DAW mode will work (SHIFT + PROG pad): The knobs an faders will have to be set with MIDI learn: 1/ Select the MIDI button top right corner of the Live window 2/ Select a parameter in Live you wish to control, here a volume fader: 3/ Move the desired control on the MiniLab 3, here fader 1: The control will appear in the MIDI Mappings. ------------------------ I have not tried that, but I concluded that it will not give full functionality/experience, so I ended up upgrading my Ableton Live to the newest version. Anyway, hope this helps.
I've been searching for that info for hours now and it is incredibly frustrating to find out that answer is basically "just upgrade Ableton." I really want to be an Arturia fanboy because the hardware is so beautifully designed, but I'm pretty disappointed so far on the software side.
After commenting on an other Arturia video earlier, I find myself here again. I have spend DAYS (!) trying to understand this MIDI, "DAW", Ableton and what not. To be fair: it has been a terrible experience. I was looking forward to creating my own music/beats with the Minilab. Turns out I'm considering throwing it out of the window or returning it to the store. I'm actually getting mad typing this. All these negative and frustrated comments and nobody at Arturia seems to bother? At the very least answer some questions or use this feedback for proper tutorial video's. I'm very disappointed at the moment and would NOT recommend this device or company to anyone
In all fairness, and I don't mean to sound harsh, but it's not up to Arturia to teach you the fundamentals of MIDI, DAWs or the basics of Ableton. Maybe how MIDI is suppose to be working and setup for their products?! It's on you, the same as it was on me 14 years ago when I had no knowledge, but I had an internet connection, time, and a brain. You have all those and I would argue its even easier for people now, to create music with the the staggering amount of info on RU-vid, free software/plugins, cheap hardware controllers. This helped me over the years until I started programming synths and understating the fundamentals of how a fully finished track should be done (did this with an online course, books and RU-vid as RU-vid got bigger).
@@Inverse_Midas Have you ever tried yourself to use the Minilab 3 with Ableton Live? If yes, then I guess you wouldn't have had the time to be writing this haineous comment here: I used to use the Minilab mk2 which was good with Ableton and for playing live; I also owned several Midi controllers in the past. Since I've started to use Minilab 3, I've spent hours trying to understand if there's not a conflict between DAW mode and the CC notes and MIDI information sent by the controller. Just an example: the Pads are meant to communicate through Channel 10 (that's what Arturia's Midi Control Center software reads) but I can only trigger the sound if I setup the Input of my drums to All Channels in My DAW. Even the keyboard, when assigned to Channel 10, doesnt play the Instrument assigned to Ch10 in the DAW. I just can't wrap my head around it....
Dear Arturia, your device does not work like this! I don't have even a half of this buttons light when trying to repeat, and the result is really different! Looks like you do some activities behind the camera! This video is not "how to", this is "have a look how I can". A lot of expressions, but a little bit of knowledge. Is it really so difficult to make a step by step guide for beginners?
had the same problem, on the "link Temo midi", setup I deactivated the minilab 3 under Control surface, input and output and then quit Live.. when I opened it again it recognized my minilab automatically with the pads correctly assigned, hope this helps. ah btw I also updated Live to vers. 12, but I would try this method before updating, maybe it works on earlier versions.
Hi! I cannot change of modify any MIDI Mapping on Ableton Live Lite to controll with my Minilab 3. Neither on DAW, User or Arturia mode.. Is there a limitation for this in the Lite versión or something is not working as it should? Thanks!
It is not clear how to set the minilab 3 up with Ableton 10 full version and I am stil searching for that answer. It is claimed in the video that the answer was in the description but that answer appears to be false. If you could help that would be appreciated.
most of the video available are not sufficiently detailed to understand how to use and parameter the minilab. I am loosing time looking for answers every where. Not satisfactory at all
You make it seem SO easy to set up in Ableton, but it's a nightmare. I had to create my own control surface script. Whilst that alone wasn't difficult, no matter HOW hard I try I just cannot get Ableton to recognise either the 'master knob' or the 'shift' button. Arturia cant help until I register the device and no way am I doing that until I know I can use it's functions, so I may just have to return it to Amazon sadly.
For anyone who is interested, Ableton Live 11 DOES run on Win7 only it isn't supported. But the Minilab 3 is great. I was so pleased to have it working.
@ArturiaOfficial : can you provide more information about Ableton Live 11 integration? There seems to be a conflict in your script. I have 2 main issues: 1- Pads are assigned to CH16 [DAW mode] and CH15 [Arturia or User mode]: this is unlogical, and if I change mode, then I have to make sure the track I assigned to the Pad has the right Channel Input. Why is that? 2-When I modify the default script in MCC (say, to make the encoders Relative 2; and to change velocity of the faders) then I save this to User 1, then when in Ableton I first have activate User1 mode, and back to DAW mode, the modifications seem to work. But this doesn't apply to the faders. 3- [In DAW mode] ARP function: for the Arp to work, Ableton play button must be pressed. Then if I disable the Arp and want to play again, I need to press "Play" button again, even if the session was still playing. And in general: Can I modify some parts of the Default script and use it as is in Ableton Live? Can I change the channels assigned to the Minilab pads? INFO: I'm on MCC firmware 1.1.1; using the Minilab 3 Default script; setup in Ableton (Track IN/OUT: ON ; Sync OUT: ON ; Remote: OFF) I own a Minilab MK2 and the workflow is really good for me. Why so many changes on the mk3? Thanks in advance!
One thing I learned about teaching is that if you want newbies to understand something you have to explain things as if it is for a 12 year old child. This is show-off, nothing more. Congratulations with your skills but teaching is not one of them...
Rarely do I comment but felt I had to on this occasion. Read through some of the comments and they are same issues as I'm having. Tutorials are awful wasted my time watching them 3 times over to try catch a glimpse of what they are doing and try to replicate. Actually laughed at myself thinking what are ye doing even trying. Support just send me to the FAQ's or the video tutorials. Total step by step tutorial is what's needed just to put in a simple loop beat on time or a college degree course🙂. I doubt that's coming. I will be sending it back tomorrow.
This controller didn’t work with Ableton Live 11.1. I can’t use encoders, I can’t map it manually. It’s a shame that this controller doesn’t work out of the box like Akai
@@psychish14 Yes. I’m update Ableton Live to 11.2.5. But I find another problem. Infinite encoders are not exactly infinite. When I use one device with macros, it’s ok. But when I switch arm to another track, I need to pickup the value of each macros. I can’t just turn the knob and continue change parameter on another device. I spend two days to solve this problem, but i can’t. It feels like I use non endless knobs.
I just bought one and i can't configure it with ableton live, i changed mk2 for the mk3 because of the transport pads and I haven't found a way to make it work...
This is obviously designed to show people "how easy it is to use with Ableton" The truth is it doesnt quite work like that. At 2:00 "just press the first minilab key that lights in red". Nope. Only got one green light. Probably need to find a better tutorial....
I am sorry, but it is deceptive to announce that it works with older versions of live and offer a script. The script does not exist and this does not work except with the very latest version of live. Which I do not own. I am returning this. Not cool Arturia, this is my first product from you and probably the last.
time 2.41 It's very hard to see what button you push when all fingers are spread over the knobs. Can't you point just one finger over the right knob? Think as a noob, that makes it more easy to understand.
They press simultaneously Pad1 + Pad4 [Pad 1 = record clip on Track1 (Midi) // Pad 4 = record clip on Track4 (Audio)]. In this example, Track4 is recording the audio coming out of Track1 (it's called resampling and it allows to have a waveform file to work with, rather than Midi information). EDIT: if you only want to record a Midi clip of what you're playing, you only need to press the corresponding pad [say you have a bass on Track 2: you'd have to press Pad 2 to record, then again to stop recording and have it play over].
how i can set minilab 3 to ableton live 12 lite But i suggest Arturia to maybe do some tutorials from zero in order to do step by step a complete video on how to set up the device from the moment of installation until the end and then finally quickly show how to start a song.
Hello dear How can I record on Ableton live but using analog lab presets and sound When I play with the preset sound of analog lab and record from Ableton it doesn't record anything because no instrument added
Love this intro! I'm a beginner, and just having a baseline reference is valuable. One thing I'm trying to emulate is switching tracks with the Shift+MainKnob, and it's not working on my setup. Is there something I'm missing with the midi mapping? Can't find anything about that online.
@@IraVB Ableton only supports Minilab 3 in version 11.2.5 and up. I had version 11.0 and faced the same problem. Did an update on Ableton and it works fine now :). Just know that you still have to select "Minilab 3" in the MIDI control settings of Ableton, then it will work.
So Akai products integrate with Ableton straight out of the box with no further installation of any kind needed, but Arturia require you to download and run like 3 different programs, and then also don't have integration with versions of Ableton earlier than 11? (and also don't have the links in the 'how to' videos that they claim they have?) wtf last time I buy an Arturia product lol
I bought this as a midi keyboard cause I need something small for desk my other is to big I just assumed it would be straight forward like the other one I have plug it in and it works. Oh but not for this one you need a masters degree in electronics
Clearly you can see at 4:54 that someone is using mouse and stoping the recording, Stupid keyboard without proper transpose controls. have to press multiple things
just bought a minilab mk3 and i'm finding these tutorials to be absolutely useless. they only talk about the obvious points and the things that are literally written in the controller
How are these useless? You just magically know everything she says? I just got it to and it's nice to be given a starting point. Such a pretentious thing to say when this company takes the time to make these helpful videos. Give it time, YT will be flooded with all the hipster hacks you're after.
@@EOE808 i’m not experienced at all LOL that’s why I’m so frustrated. These videos hardly helped me get started whatsoever, but gladly a few friends around managed to help me out.
@@ricardodurante8753 i'm not experienced at all either I just got the minilab 3 yesterday and i actually find these videos pretty okay. They're helping me get started that's the whole point. I guess the rest is for us to figure out you just have to play with it for a little bit and see what it can do
@@despinakhoury1918 that's the process my friend. Once we learn the basics of how gear or VSTs work, then it's up us to turn that knowledge into music. Best of luck! Just create. Good or bad create and we'll get better.
To everyone using Ableton Live and assigns their instrument tracks to a Midi Channel Input: the Minilab Pads are assigned to CH16 [in DAW mode] or CH15 [in Arturia or User mode]. This is contrary to what the User's manual reads: "The [...] pads on MiniLab 3 serve multiple purposes. In their default state, they send MIDI notes on channel 10 - the channel most commonly used for drums in a DAW or multi-timbral synthesizer."
Hi Arturia, Is it possible to control Cubase with the minilab 3 ? as seamlessly it has been integrated with Abelton Live. Please make a video on how to control Cubase with the Arturia minilab3 Thanks in advance.
You simply need an advanced degree to understand any of this. Just wanted to jot down basic musical ideas. I’m not looking to create the next Radiohead album. Luckily, it works as a basic midi controller and integrates with simpler DAWs like GarageBand. For all you engineers out there, I envy your brains. This is not “easy” to learn as the video suggests.
The bit with the drum pads in this video is misleading - the split screen shows you're drumming on pads with two hands while simultaneously using the mouse to stop the clip!!! I was trying for ages to work out how you did this! it's frustrating the video was cheated there and that you can't actually loop drums like this - as far as i can tell (so far) in order to drum on the pads you need to change back to 'Arturia' mode, which means you CAN'T use the minilab to launch/record/stop the clip?? You would need to use the piano keys for playing the drums really. Some good startup tips did help me however, thanks... but wish there was a mention of how to set up the preferences/control surface, because despite what the manual says it does not 'automatically recognise and connect to the DAW' (many comments below with this issue too).
You're right this is so misleading... I reckon there are 2 ways to fingerdrum on the pads and record: 1/ [DAW mode]: Fingerdrum on Bank B and just before the end of your recording loop, quickly switch to Bank A [Shift + Pad 2] and then press the pad corresponding to your recording clip so it plays over. 2/ [Arturia mode] Fingerdrum on either Bank A or B or both, and just before the end of your recording loop, quickly switch to DAW mode [Shift + Pad 3] and then press the pad corresponding to your recording clip so it plays over. Neither of these 2 solutions is practical, and this is not what they show on the official tutorial video. Lame. The more practical solution is to stay in DAW mode, to record the drums on the keyboard [you have to find the corresponding C1 octave first] so you still have access to trigger clips and transport buttons.
4:51 Who stops the recording? A mysterious hand moving the mouse... Arturia, if this is how you expect us to learn, you are on the wrong track. You are continually cheating to make us think that the Live recording process is simple, and it's not true.
So once you tap a pad to launch a clip, what happens if you tap it again? Does it play it again or does it stop the clip? Also for some of the "missing" functionality like undo, activate metronome, etc., is it possible to map these functions to a one of the custom layouts you can program? Any clarification is appreciated - I've looked through the available manuals but still not finding the answers.
Have you been able to find any answers? I've been trying to use the compatability with fl studio but it isn't currently working and there's almost 0 support out there to help. I'm now considering ableton but if it's just as bad I think I might be screwed
@@ryseabyss9955 I ended up finding a Novation Launchkey Mini Mk3 used and I bought that a few days ago. It's cool so far but the keys are really crappy and I kind of regret not getting the Minilab. But I can tell you that the top row of pads on the Launchkey just launch the clip again so I imagine that the single row of pads on the Minilab is the same. There's another button on the Launchkey to stop/solo/mute those tracks once they're playing but it doesn't look like the Minilab has the same functionality. I haven't tried mapping custom layouts to undo/activate metronome yet but I will give it a shot eventually
Thanks for the video...I got mine a month back. My perception - Keys are harder...found difficult to play for fast tempo melodies. Do not know if I need to yet to gel well with the minilab 3 keys...am used to Casio and Yamaha MIDI enabled CTK and PSR respectively keyboard keys... Is it so that Arturia 49 keys and 61 keys have similar keys? Won't be very excited to go for them in that case. Well. Still trying to explore. I have Ableton Intro 10 license, that's packed with more functionalities than the Live Lite version being offered by Arturia with minilab3...I feel they should give an option of whether to have a DAW with the keyboard or not and a price difference for that too. I mean a reduction if someone (like me) chooses to not have a DAW offering. Thanks again.
I guess a kind of mix between keystep 37 and minilab would be nice. well there's the akai mini pro that is pretty much that (but with limited live DAW control)
Hi, I’ve found this tutorial series useful with careful watch and thousand times re watch. I was just wandering on how can pads get more sensitive when finger drumming, sounds kind of delayed, I’ve already sped up the buffer latency, any other suggestions? Thanks a lot!
Ok, but how to change between drums banks... Both A and B are using only 8 first instruments... MiniLab 3 in nice... but from day I bought it I'm using my time to find out how to configure it :/
Hi Arturia, is there any reason you didn't enable full device control (like the ability to cycle through devices on a track and cycle through parameter banks past the first eight) and will the next iteration of the Keylabs have full device control? Would be really excited about them if they do! Thanks.
ah was wondering about that. I guess the idea is if you want to control a parameter you use a macro. at least you get to have the name of the parameter directly on the controller (in comparison to free mapping which is as fast as setting a macro). This is a limitation but on the other end the scene integration seem to be really clever
@@valdir7426 True, but wouldn't you still be limited to macros on only the first device (unless you reach for the mouse and keyboard. Or I guess you could map params from different devices to the macros but you're still limited to eight)? I hope the higher end Keylab mkIII models don't have these kinds of limitations when they are released, I would definitely upgrade.
@@peabodyscientific2082 I don't use preset much inside live but what I meant is grouping all your instruments/effects in a rack and using the macros to chose the parameters you want to controls. Also I think you can group racks into racks if that's what you need. But yes you'd still have to choose eight. For me the drawback is more that it requires a few actions to set-up your rack. Also If it does control the first eight parameters (regardless of the fact it's a macro; I'm not sure); then for vsts syou could also only make the controls you need apparent.
"Easy and enjoyable?" More like obtuse and joyless. Why are we repeating the same mistakes we've already made? We learned this all in the 80's when Japanese and German engineers buried synth functionality under dozens of pages of menus indicated with a 2 digit readout. It was a notorious disaster and we finally realized that the tech may be digital but the humans are not! This is like the jokes about video game controller complexity. I was expecting her to get into some "hold the triangle button, and down down left up up right, mash the circle, let go, square. That's how you record a track" Would it have killed them to put like 2 transport buttons on the thing? It is literally the one thing we all do over and over no mater how you use a DAW. It is the one reliably constant need for anyone using this device and here we are at version 3 and they haven't figured it out.

Hello, I am attempting to use Ableton live 9 like a sound effect generator. I want to hit buttons on my Elgato stream deck xl using Midi and trigger the playback of sound effects audio files I have in Ableton while in session view. Do you have a video I can watch that can explain how i can do that and how to map the buttons from the stream deck xl using midi?
Kudos to playing without a metronome - I guess that was necessary because Live's metronome function cannot be activated via Minilab? If I'm wrong and it IS possible, let me know! Otherwise please implement it!
