"If I can't climb a tree in this I don't want to wear it" nothing has resonated more 😂 I think that attitude has followed me into adulthood and I am now in my 30s, still don't wear jewellery or makeup. My bags are really carrying the team at this point
Things like thinness and age are definitely a privilege. The older I get and the more weight I gain I feel it becomes more important to look quite groomed to avoid being considered a person who has lost complete control of their life. Accessoires and makeup help me a lot. Also because I love casual menswear inspired clothes I like the juxtaposition of these clothes with earrings, bracelets and some natural makeup.
My version of "Can I climb a tree in this?" was "Could I jump into a dance battle and still be comfortable in this?" Haha. I've worn jewelry since I was a kid and I pretty much wear the same things every day. The items I wear and care for most have familial and ethnic ties. In this way, my accessorising is a sort of cultural practice. Nice video :)
omg- this is me. I was a dancer growing up, and if I can't comfortably dance in something, I don't desire it in my wardrobe. The very few accessories I have are personal and have stories attached to them, like a necklace customized and gifted to me as a child, waistbands made by my grandmother (which are unseen most of the time), or they have utility. As my style has evolved and I've moved away from fashion to more of a personal styling of more "regular" items, and I've noticed that I currently practice to style my clothes around the utility of a few key things, by really leaning on shapes and lines.
As someone who is plus size I couldn't participate in fashion as much as i wanted and to compensate accessorizing has been a big part of my style . I love that you brought up how un-inclusive fashion can be
Love this video! In Bliss Fosters’ latest vids he is accessorising his neck scarfs with rings and I really dig the look. I’m also very practical minded, never wear accessories besides scarfs and bags, so I focus on sculptural silhouettes
Unrelated but I am forever indebted to you for introducing me to the City Boy style. I used to be what is now considered a Star Boy but I wanted a style that was more mature in a way that’s why I gravitated towards Aime Leon Dore’s lookbook. But I think City Boy style really hits the sweet spot of youthful and more mature and that ALD style. Thank you! I think I would’ve fell into the preppy look slowly if I hadn’t known what a City Boy was. Also, I want you to make a City Boy starter pack 2 video. :-)
I really love this video, it’s so thoughtful and has so much practical information. Now that I think of it, as I’ve gotten older, a garment’s fit and shape has become more important to me. I no longer like when things are too shapeless, or too fitted. I tend to wear solid colors, and liven things up with jewelry and beautiful scarves. I don’t like prints on my body I’ve discovered…
i love the reference of the article and the questioning of what we visually feel is "stylish" -- often coming with a lot of bias. these days i tend to dress to look interesting, expressive, rather than "stylish" or "pretty", with the latter adjectives often boxing up my imagination
I've recently come around to accessorizing too. Its great how a few small items can make you feel more put together or even cooler. Its come to the point where I've started feeling a little naked without certain things. Lately i've adopted a cheap ring I found and a long wallet chain and I really do think "Hell yeah" to myself when I have them on.

I’ve had this same thought, though I do have the magpie compulsion of picking up any shiny thing I can find. My solution to feeling overstimulated by my jewelry has been to wear lots of tiny hoops earrings because I never have to take them off, unless I want to switch out the charms I put on them. For bracelets, I wear a tight fitting vintage watch. I wear a silicone ring keeper over top of my tiny wedding ring - all my jewelry never over encumbers me lol. I only started this past year and I love it! No necklaces yet though because I have a two year old
I agree! One of my "3 words" I've decided is 'comfortable' (another is 'tailored'); fundamentally I need to not be managing my clothes while I'm wearing them. As a plus size person who just doesn't have access to participate in most fashion, it's forced me to make my own pieces- which is hard seeing as I'm not a designer and my skills aren't strong enough to make very well made-looking minimalistic clothes! Thank you for bringing this up, a lot of the time the straights (sized) don't like to acknowledge what doesn't affect them! 💗
For oversized women the most designed pieces are: gaudy-looking (with wild prints: faces, animals, fronts) pieces or with revealing cleavage! (I don't like either options.)
@@Alisse.notavaliable yes! Just because I don’t hate my body doesn’t mean I want to wear only tiny sexy clothing! On Pinterest I don’t bother using the new search by body type function because the clothes are always bad. I’m going to find fashion inspo on any size (which always ends up being skinny) and then find options/alternatives for me- which usually end up making it now.
I wouldn’t say I dressed exactly like that irl I was doing a lot of style experimentation on tiktok at the time but I still kept and wear a lot of those pieces (I never wore a single one of those mini skirts outside of 1 costume party)

As someone who grew up with a lot of boys and still plays a lot of sports, this video really resonates with me. I find that accessories associated with sports or displayed in menswear catalogs (really love Aime Leon Dore) typically work for me. Yes that includes vintage ties, utility belts, trouser socks but also sport watches, piercing earrings, and chain necklaces. My style can skew a little femme and I think these accessories provide just the right degree of contrast.
Love this video. My style is very different, but I too struggle with accessorizing for many of the practical reasons you mentioned (sensory issues, forgetfulness, and in my case the need to be able to case my kids around a playground at the drop of a hat), and felt that some accessories are needed to make a basic outfit into something that feels complete. I liked a lot of the solutions you have found for yourself and feel motivated to find a hat that matches my own style.
i love bright colors and loud pieces so i dont really accessorize that much. i got my uniform of a beanie and my favorite chain with every outfit and thats about it

Yessss, tree-climbing takes precedence over everything! With that said, I climbed a huuuuge New Orleans tree in a very precarious outfit (ankle-length mesh batwing dress under a leather torso harness with lace-up sandals and tons of free-swinging jewelry) and an old woman suddenly appeared underneath me going, "Missy, you'd best be careful up there or you'll end up like the ghost who's watching you very intently from down here on solid ground!" I survived, but I had second thoughts about what to wear on my next arboreal adventure . . . 👻
I no longer wearing earrings on my lobes but I still have two piercings on other parts of my ear that have become a neutral base of metal accessories. What I enjoy with this is that depending on how my hair is, I can intentionally highlights these pieces. I think this is similar to having a pair of glasses in different colours, creating a constant based but elevating outfits depending on colours, etc.
So interesting to notice the work accessories are doing, and it feels like if you’re default ‘uncomfortable-ish’ in them, you’re at a disadvantage aesthetically! I also find hats and scarves as well as socks the most comfortable- maybe because they’re soft and not made of cold metal? Great video thank you !

I purchased them from this old couple that runs a jewelry booth at this antique store, and I love them because they always give discounts 😊

This is such an interesting video because I have quite a different approach to accesorizing, I'm no "maximalist" by any means but I do like earrings and necklaces, I like scarves, I wear makeup (though not a lot, but I do like lipstick). This has made me think about how I view accessories, and as a mid-(potentially plus? I don't really know where the line is drawn)size person, I had never thought about my body as an accessory, but in fact, it is! I also like how you say minimalism is not the answer: as I've grown older, I started having a more "minimal" style to a certain extent but I still want to look "interesting" and your style has inspired me a lot
I've been in a style rut for awhile, and I've found a really great pair of sunglasses has pushed me to have a bit more direction in my style, while also allowing me to strongly prioritize comfort and utility. I follow a few artists and designers from Japan, and I love how there is a simplicity and boldness in their styles (think HIGE and ME yt channel) and I'd love to add elements of that to how I accessorize. I like a little bit of edginess in my style, and I think the accessories is where I can explore that. I, too, don't like the feel of jewelry, and the very few jewelry items that I have are very personal. But bc my lifestyle has a lot of travel, I don't bring or wear those often. So now, my focus has switched to my non-clothing items needing to have really high utility and durability. I aspire to create a style that allows me to accessorize as little as possible (less for me to keep up with) while, still having a complete, but low-effort and still intentional look, ... but not necessarily minimalism. What I want is similar to how you mentioned in a previous video of people wearing everyday clothing to support their life, but clearly dressing well. Its really cool seeing your style evolution bc I do think a few tweaks in fit and material, and really leaning into what shapes flatter me can really elevate my style to get me there.
I LOVE this video! It addresses an issue I often run into and have debated many times. I do not like to dress minimalist as it often highlights that you don’t have a ‘perfect’ figure. Especially when clothes are more form fitting. With a lot of basic outfits I see and like, I notice that I just like the person’s figure. I feel great in my body, but I am prone to bloating and that’s just something I really can’t be bothered to stress about. It’s not worth my time and so I really enjoy dressing in a way that doesn’t use my body as an accessory. I’ll always gravitate towards well-structured garments and flattering fabrics, or items of clothing with an interesting element to them. Much to the frustration of my boyfriend, who wishes I’d just wear jeans and a plain t-shirt from time to time. 😂
I can totally relate though there are three kinds of functional accessories I have always liked a lot: silk shawls, sunglasses and extravagant sun hats. I am just not at all a jewelery girl.
As someone who went from NO fashion sense at all to working in luxury retail my style has evolved so many times its insane. Being that I manage a sunglass store now I think you could guess my #1 accessory
If you want a silver ring that looks big but isn’t actually that big I have been really loving my ring from Kuurth! It took forever to get here but it’s silver, priced well (I don’t think it’s just plated but could be wrong?), and just the right size!

this really speaks to me!! though I’m somewhat of the opposite - I am someone who has tried and failed over the years to wear really loud fashion pieces and accessories because I love to see people wearing them, but have realized that I systematically feel uncomfortable or just not “me” in anything but very simple pieces in about four colours. but I also felt like my outfits were lacking until I realized I love to mix metals and I love simple but intricate pendants. so I slowly added rings, bracelets, necklaces, earrings and one investment pendant to my outfits in equal amounts silver and gold (though a touch more silver since I can only afford gold-filled!). now, I feel like the simplicity of my outfits really lets my jewellery shine!! I feel like I’m getting to express myself artistically and also be comfortable mentally and physically. one last thing - I also hate the feeling of makeup on my face!! my one makeup staple is blue eyeshadow because I wear a lot of blue and love how it evokes a sort of 90s feel (from which a lot of my clothing pieces tend to follow as well).

Although I didn't practice sports, all my friends are guys and I studied engineering 🤔.
I do think my style leans more maximalist in terms of colors and patterns, so accessories are just too much to coordinate with all that. Necklaces and rings have never been practical either. But I've recently gotten into wearing interesting hairbands, scrunchies and bandanas. They're quite functional while also adding interest and because they are further away from my clothes, they don't look like too much.
