that's crazy, lived in Tokyo for 7 years, haven't been back in a few years now, so basically they're dressing the same as 5 years ago, 10 years ago, 15 years ago, and 20 years ago....hasnt changed at all, i like how they don't hop on trends as much as they do in europe

bro that's so not true, a lot has changed. take Visvim for example, 20 years ago they were selling ordinary stuff like everyone else does, today they make some of the finest clothings with top quality and unique designs more superior than most non-designer western brands. 20 years ago Ape was super phenomenal but now no one would wear them because the same designs have been going on for 20 straight years. Sacai, N.hoolywood, Kolor, Junya Wanatabe, highly recommend you to take a look at their look books before coming to the same conclusion you made.

Most of our style is inspired from traditional dress like Jinbei, Samue, Happi and Hanten with modern twist. Japan also has more than 10 fashion style in Harajuku alone (Gyaru, Lolita, visual Kei, Decora, Mori girl and many more) without considering fashion from other prefecture. In Japan American adapted style is called Ametora (denims, bomber Jacket, tailored suits, formal shoes that's about it). The loose fit Men style (City boy) is inspired from Samue and Japanese Women likes wearing skirt (short and long) which was inspired from Hakama. Not all of our style is Ametora.

just returned from japan and yes, the city boy style definitely grew on me. i'm usually in slimmer, streamlined clothing (think asket overshirt, plain white tee, nudie lean deans, pf flyers or dunks) but i found myself buying items with looser fits while i was there. definitely very comfortable and didn't feel like i was drowning in my clothes or that i was a teenager wearing my dad's clothes. it's looser clothes with structure, if that makes any sense. definitely added some of those books on my amazon wish list :)

2:40 one of the funny things about the recursivity you touched on here is that "the way american college students were dressing" as defined by Take Ivy was also kind of a lie. Part of Take Ivy's genius was that a lot of the fits were fabricated! Therby creating an influence. Love it so much.
