#8 - I''ve been on my minimalism journey since 2000. One Monday at work, after someone asked what my husband and I had done over the weekend and I shared that we'd gone on a walk and picnic with our dog and a hike the next day, another co-worker said "Don't you ever do anything?" Without sounding annoyed, I asked her what she and her husband did. She relayed the stores they'd gone to and the items they'd purchased and I responded "Oh, well that sounds like nice time together" in a kind voice. She paused, got quiet and walked away. Most people equate value and time well spent with acquiring but, when pushed, my co-worker seemed to realize the fallacy in that logic.
@calisongbird
@calisongbird 10 месяцев назад
Wow, what a rude coworker! Anyway, it’s none of anyone’s business what you do with your personal time. You don’t owe them any explanations and certainly don’t have to put up with their judgment. You’re both there for a paycheck - that’s it. Next time if someone asks, you can just say something generic like “I had a relaxing weekend” with a smile. They’ll get the hint. And if anyone says anything judgey, just give them a blank stare and say nothing. Let them feel uncomfortable.

The sole thought of spending the time in a good way is always equal to go to stores makes me sick. When you mentioned the picnic and the walk I felt instantly relaxed.

i realized that when you fancy something beautiful in a shop it's often because it fits in the shop : some people worked hard to make a nice scenery for the things they sell to make those things attractive. When you buy the thing and it is in your home without the "decor" in which you first saw it, it becomes more common... so I remember that everytime... and it is very rare that I buy something.

For those items I just can't throw in the trash bin (to the landfill), I donate to a second hand shop. I let them decide to throw it in the bin or not. Yes, I put the decision on someone else. 😝 Sometimes it's the only way to get it out of my house. 💖🌞🌵😷
@SimpleHappyZen
@SimpleHappyZen 10 месяцев назад
Yes sometimes it's difficult to actually get something out of the house :) My philosophy is that I don't want to donate things that aren't in good condition anymore, or that are just clearly not something that is going to be useful for anyone, since then it would indeed be letting someone else deal with your 'trash'. However, if there's a chance the item can get a second life with someone else, then of course it's best to donate or sell :)
@suzisaintjames
@suzisaintjames 10 месяцев назад
@@SimpleHappyZen, yes! That's my problem! Who am I to decide if it's not in good enough condition or if it's useful? People are always refurbish and up cycling, so why deprive them by putting it in the trash bin? That's why I drop it at the donation center. 💖🌞🌵😷

Hi, Vera! I stopped trying that certain people accept me. I was the kind of person who didn’t care about what others felt about me, as long as I felt well with my conscience. I didn’t feel the need to be accepted, liked or understood, even because I know I am a bit different regarding my lifestyle and likes. At the age of 43, I started hanging out with my stepmother’s family (my parents divorced when I was 20 and I never cared to hang out with my stepmother till then). Very soon I started noticing that they found me weird, strange, different, .... and stupidly I started changing the way I act to please them and to be accepted, only to notice that didn’t make any difference, because they continued to find me weird. So, at the age of 49 (I’m 53), I decided that enough was enough and I stopped caring. I even started avoiding being with them. That cost me much more alone time, like spending the holidays alone, but I feel much more at peace not caring about what they think about me. I see my father usually alone and not with them, and if I am actually with them, I interact at the minimum and I went on taking my crochet or stitching to family gatherings and I don’t care what they think 💙💛💗❤️🧡💚💜🖤♥️

Hello! I am 15 years old, and in the past week, I have had a lot of time to think because my school is on Thanksgiving break. For the past few days, I have thought about all of what you mentioned in this video, and I am very passionate about learning what is best for a happier and healthier lifestyle. I love sharing these kinds of videos with my teen friends. I hope they can see just how amazing and helpful this video is. It especially shocked me when you mentioned worrying about landfills. This is because I spent all day today wrapping my mind around what to do with my unwanted clothing and understanding how I can reduce waste. I love our environment and learning how to save it, so it always makes me happy that others feel the same way I do. I do everything in my power to spread the word about saving our earth, but it can be hard sometimes when people are not susceptible to change. I dont want to force people to change their style of living. I just want what's best for our planet as a whole :)

Excellent as always Vera. To a certain degree I stop caring about my hair. I washed, blew dry and curled my hair everyday for years and years but during Covid I started washing every-other-day, no more blow drying or curling. Fluff and go was my new motto and it still looks good I had to tell myself because I wasn't used to it. What a freeing feeling. Thanks so much. You could probably do a 3rd video on this topic as I never get tired of learning.

I used to be a shopaholic, but when I learned about minimalism through RU-vid I found that it felt good to me to have less stuff and need less stuff. I’m still decluttering my house (I do it slowly, trying to found people that I can make happy with my stuff) and now I can shop without buying anything. Like you I love to look at nice things, but nowadays I ask myself if I really need it and most of the time this is not the case. I do have a wishlist and those things are really necessary and now I save to buy something after paying off my debts. Like you I was bullied when I was a lot younger, but I did the opposite. I just decided to be myself and dress the way I wanted and if they didn’t like it then at least they had a reason to bully me and I wouldn’t care about it.

On the “not being athletic” for me is not being the perfect cook. Recently I got married and moved to the US, and I found myself having a lot of pressure for making “home made bread”, “home made recipes”, and needing to have that skill to feel validated. My husband doesn’t care about this, is more me putting pressure on myself by seeing other women in the family do this and feeling like I should do the same because I join the family. Luckily my husband is great and loves when I make quesadillas or simple meals. So I’m learning to let go of these expectations that i put on myself to be the perfect “women/wife”.

Thank you Vera for sharing these things with us that you have found so helpful to stop caring about. It is easy to see that you have put much thoughtful consideration into each of them. Your thoughts are so appreciated and spur me on towards a more sustainable lifestyle. I would also like to focus on the things that I intend to embrace and bring forward in my life that will enable me to live a happier, healthier, more sustainable lifestyle as a HSP. I have personally found that I have a deep need for beauty in my life. It is as important as air for me to breathe! Since I am mostly homebound due to illness and handicaps, it is important that I have my chair close to a window with a beautiful view. I also enjoy searching RU-vid for channels that show the beauty of creation, whether it be sweeping coastal videos, walks through the forest, or aquariums, or curated gardens. I find that it helps me so much to "travel" virtually with people to distant lands where I could never go otherwise. I also get to meet people like yourself who offer thoughts that open doors for me that previously seemed "locked 🔒". I am also excited to hear about what is worthy of embracing and curating as well as what is good to set free! Thank you for all that you do to share your thoughts with us in such a lovely format! All of the natural scenes that you interject into your videos are deeply appreciated along with your thoughts. Have a wonderful week!!! ❤

Your yoga practice is perfect for you because it’s your practice and it exists. As a yoga teacher, I also still don’t do crow pose along with some others but I love it so much and it does so much for me. I believe yoga is for anyone who can breathe because it’s really all about the breath with the movements and the intentionality. If you can breathe, you can practice yoga. When I became an instructor, I set out to help make yoga more accessible so that more people (as an originally non-athletic person with a motor disability) could experience the benefits from it. 💖 That being said, I too, often struggle with perfectionism in other activities and areas of my life.

Thanks for sharing! I think this is one of your best straight-talk on helpful tips yet! For me, fashion is my no. 1 creative outlet! I get so much joy from shopping/thrifting, that I am spinning ideas on how to share my enthusiasm for styling, on a tight budget, to help & inspire others…so I give myself permission to shop/thrift & have wayyyy too many clothes!🤭 One of the things I have stopped🛑 “subscribing” to are hectic ‘traditions’ with high pressure, exhausting demands & lofty expectations. I spent too much of my adult life exhausting myself with planning & coordinating grandiose holiday & special occasion events only to end up feeling overwhelmed, disappointed, unappreciated, & jaded by the ultimate end results of dealing with the dysfunctional issues of other people. Now, I have by my personal faith convictions, and prioritizing my peace & emotional wellbeing, just let it all go. Now, I simply may or may not participate in group special occasion events but only as it brings me joy & not chaotic feelings…it’s ok to sit out on a party, or just do a quiet intimate one on one meet up like a lunch… if the big event hoopla is just too much. I learned that it is perfectly ok to share the sentiment of a special occasion in a small meaningful way without a big ordeal every time. Hope maybe this helps someone’s else too, esp as we are right in the middle of holiday season with all the high pressure & hype! Give yourself permission to sit out on a big hoorah if it feels best for you!😎

Thank you for this video! I stopped counting calories, too. I want to loose weight, but I realized that counting calories made me think about food the whole day and made me feel guilty when I had chocolate or a cookie or got "above" my "allowed" number of calories, and I did not want such a toxic relationship with food. I also do yoga although I am not good at it because I am SO inflexible, and I also never mastered crow pose. In my class, I do what I can do, and it's fun and feels good.

I relate to a lot of these things, as someone who was bullied too i always subconsciously worried about being liked, maybe it was some sort of defense mechanism my brain developed? I stopped carrying a purse or bag. I did this many years ago and it has been so freeing! I would sometimes think, “but I am a woman I should carry a purse.” But then I started thinking….why. What rule or law says I “have” to carry a purse. None. So I don’t. If something does not fit in my pockets I just do without it while I am out and about. Now I do use a few bags occasionally when I need to temporarily carry more items to a certain place. But having a purse for bag always with me I just do not do. Most things I can use my phone apps to pay for something. And I put a lip balm and car key in a pocket. That is it. What else to I “have” to be carrying with me. Nothing:) I do have a small wallet I sometimes carry. But no more than that😊 Great video as always Vera❤

Something I've stopped caring about is other people's judgment when I follow my values or stay true to myself and whatever is best for me, saying no etc. 😎 That's investing time in making myself miserable for someone else's fleeting happiness/to avoid being miserable from their response. Funny how that works.

Fantastic video! I absolutely agree that minimalism and even just decluttering can actually help build confidence - it certainly did in my case - because it really forces you to think about what you actually want, forces you to understand your motivations for why you buy or want to dispose of something. For example I'm someone who by nature likes wearing more or less the same outfit all the time - I like the comfort of it, the simplicity, the regularity etc but before minimalism I felt that I always had to wear a variety of different outfits because everyone else did. As i decluttered clothes I came face to face with the fact that I wasn't buying and wearing a variety of different clothing outfits because I wanted to, but simply because i felt I had to. Minimalism helped me to stop caring about that and now I feel better than ever about what I wear. I loved your point about decluttering guilt and old regrets. Someone I know calls such things 'school fees' in other words just think of the money you spent on that item or on that hobby as fees for a learning process that has helped you better understand what it is you want, enjoy need etc. That expression has always stayed with me.

I had a co-worker as well that became our manager but all of my co-worker friends were happy because he took great care of us so it's too bad your colleagues didn’t realize it was a blessing for them for you to now be their manager instead of something for them to be weird about. I had to go to my local garbage dump (landfill) last week as I cleaned out my garage. I have to admit I hate going there because the amount of waste to see is upsetting but it definitely helps me then to remember to being more conscious of my purchases.

These tips are excellent. You mentioned an example of joining an art class, I did this and initially it was ok (although there were people there that would make a big deal of displaying their art work/selling it etc and this made me feel like I wasn’t good enough). Some people there would make comments like…..well as long as you enjoyed doing this picture…. what I call hidden put downs imo, 😳 they would do this to others as well and you could see people becoming hurt or less confident to try new creative things. The numbers in the class fell, as people stopped coming but I felt I should still go, because I didn’t want to feel I’d given up, but I would dread going and then be fed up all week until the next one ! I used to love doing my Art, but slowly over a couple of years at this Art group, I found all the joy was sucked out of being creative for me, unless others liked it or accepted it I felt it was no good. I stopped wanting to do anything there or at home to do with Art. Finally I decided to give it up as it wasn’t making me happy, imagine how amazed I was a few weeks later when I suddenly started to enjoy being creative, and artistic again!!!!!!!! The relief of not going to the club far outweighed the feeling of giving up. I fell back in love with Art in all forms and still love it now. You’re so right ! …..don’t worry about what other people say or think, if you enjoy it then carry on doing it. Don’t worry about giving something up like going to a class etc, if you try something that’s just it, it doesn’t mean you always have to stick rigidly to that plan, you can always adapt it or change it !😊xx

I hope we can find the balance between quitting VS giving it enough time to see if we really like it. I am a music teacher, and I have students that sign up to sing in choir for the whole year. And then they quit after 2 weeks because it's not what they wanted. They don't give it a shot. They don't try to get better. They don't wait to see how it's going to improve their life. I had one student who quit after 2 weeks because she didn't like the way we had to sit in Mass during the service, so she quit. Yeah, we need to really figure out a good balance between staying in there long enough or just dropping out immediately. we need to find a balance

Everything you talked about is something I need to work on or not feel guilty about. I go through phases in life where I care about what people think of me, then I stop caring then I care again, it all coincides with my depression and things happening in my life at the time. I think now I’m going through a midlife crisis and get very critical of my life and things I have done, and said. Learning about Buddhism and meditation and being in the present moment made me realize I was kind of rude in my behavior at times and just saying what others wouldn’t to look like I was cool or get others approval. I regret the things I did and have apologized to people and I did get positive feedback from them and said that was the past and they are ok with how things are now!

Thank you for reminding us that we don't need to continue to beat ourselves up over past mistakes. God has forgiven us if we've asked Him to, and then He forgets it. So we don't need to remember it since He forgot it. So thank you for reminding us to let those things go. That doesn't serve us well to continue regretting things that we did in the past that we've already said we're sorry for.

Hello Vera. Thanks for another great video :) As a fellow introverted HSP who seeks peace in a simple and minimal life, your channel is one of my go to sources to find inspiration and like-mindedness. I don’t know if it is okay to make video suggestions, but I think a topic you only mentioned as a sub theme so far is travelling (as far as I know :)). Like how do you plan your vacations, so that you are not overwhelmed and how to deal with fomo when hearing about other peoples crazy travels (I remember you mentioning that you only travel further away every few years and else stay closer to home). If you have already made a video about these topics or suggestions are not welcome, I apologise in advance! :) Take care and greetings from Switzerland, Sandra

I stopped caring what people think about me. I choose to be true to myself regardless of what anyone else is doing. Being vegan, minimalist and an eco-centric global citizen, I get looked at as if there is something wrong with me and that I could not possibly be happy. If people only knew. lol

You are so right about subconsciously patterning your behavior to get people to like you. Recently I spent a week with a friend who was very loud and overbearing, and also very crude. I caught myself mimicking her crude sense of humor and I didn’t like it. It’s ok not to engage on the same level with people and to be confident in your own approach to communication and other behavior.

To take your friend’s philosophy a step further…the item was destined for a landfill the moment it was made. If you hadn’t bought it, it would have been marked down, and if it still didn’t sell it would have been disposed of. This is not to let us off the hook, we still need to be conscious consumers, however I believe overproduction of things plays a bigger role.

My mum comes from a very poor family and she finds comfort in owning everything she needs and more. She gets really attached to items, even to the point where she gets really upset if I get rid of something in my house that I bought for myself. I always get really apprehensive when she comes to see me because I know she'll ask "Where's this and that old shaggy item you got 10 years ago? Don't tell me you got rid of it!!!" Even if the item is old and broken, she will insists that it can't ever be thrown away. I'm a minimalist myself, but she's definitely a maximalist :D.

Great video! I loved when you shared the idea that eventually everything we own will be disposed of by someone. What a thought provoking statement! It reminded me a bit of the Buddhist teaching of the broken cup. Sometimes we hold an irrational attachment to material objects and this is a good reminder that they are (and always will be) temporary.

Thank you for sharing. I consider myself a recovering perfectionist. I have to remember that it doesn't have to be all-or-nothing. I try to remember that life is a journey with lots of opportunities. We all have our own journeys so it is fruitless to compare to others. I try to be kind to myself, celebrate my improvements and victories, learn from the process. I tell myself that I did the best I could with the understanding and knowledge I had at the time when I look at my past experiences. This allows me the room to improve. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I am grateful that I can apply what resonates with me to bring me peace. 🙂

I am literally nodding along and talking to you during "being liked"! Financially the impact is huge too, not trying to impress. I just started an executive degree at age 34 and my peers all use expensive tablets to take their notes. Literally everyone but me. I use a notebook i got on sale for £1. My coursemate was away on a business trip and missed our last week of classes. Whose notes did she ask to use? Mine! I think because I am actively engaging with what I write, rather than copy pasting from the slides.

Hi Vera, I feel so much pressure of not travelling like everyone else. At where I live everyone travels multiple times a year and has a bucket list of countries they want to go to. All the travel photos on social media, and almost everyone indicated they love travelling on their dating profile. This stresses me out for the longest time. People give me weird looks when I said I haven’t travelled in years and have only been to a few nearby countries. Sometimes I made up excuses to why I did not travel. Covid gave me a break but once restrictions are lifted, I get the same questions from coworkers and friends asking me where had I travelled already, or where I’m planning my next trip. I don’t have any plans! The reasons I am not travelling are firstly cost, I can’t really afford it, other than this, mainly I don’t have a travel bug like everyone else. It’s not that I don’t like to travel but the hassle of planning and booking everything I just don’t have the motivation to do it. I am not good at it. There’s so much preparation just to travel. Work etc. I hope you can make a video that covers this topic if you haven’t already. Thanks! I hope anyone could give me some advice too! This problem has been stressing me for years.

I think best advise is to be aware of your own limitations ( without putting yourself down) and enjoy hobbies/activities just for the sake of it, not to become something at it, but just to enjoy it.This way you’ll relax and avoid fustration. I have a friend whose daughter wanted to start Ballet, the daughter was about 11 years old, and because I do ballet, my friend asked me advice and said if it was not too late for her daughter to sart ballet.I said to my friend, depends what your daughter has in mind, if she wants to do ballet to pursue a career in ballet, maybe yes , a bit too late, but hey! I started ballet in my late 30’s and I do it for my own enjoyement (even I know I will never get anywhere with it). If her daughter wanted to do it to enjoy herself ,then why denying that to her? But obviously she needed to be realistic about it and be conscious about she was doing it as an activity just to enjoy, not to become a professional ballerina, to avoid later disapointment. She signed up her daughter to ballet and she is now becoming really good at it and enjoying every moment!

I also strongly believe that people are in the acquisition mode from ages 20s to mid forties to 50. If not 60. And then they start to discard after they are in their 60s. I am so happy you have learned the freedom of minimalism at your age. I am discarding so much at my age, which is 60 years old. We are throwing out and giving away possibly 80% of our home. I cannot tell you the value of our things that we are giving away and donating. It is possibly thousands and thousands of dollars it is remarkable to see my younger children and their spouses and significant others who are in the stages of acquiring. And I know that when they are in there 50s and 60s, they will be in the discard phase as well.

My favorites: you don't have to be a natural at something to enjoy it, stop buying products which supposedly will fix something in your life (like physical imperfections), and being liked. I stopped caring about other people's opinions aligning with my own. Our opinions are formed by our culture, ethnic background, the way we were brought up, education, socio economic status, etc. thus, we think differently and that's okay. I don't think there's only one correct perspective which happens to be mine.
