In this painting tutorial I share how I paint a semi abstract landscape using black and white acrylic paint and mixed media. This type of painting is sometimes referred to as a Tonal Landscape and it is my version of the coastal landscape near my home in northern Denmark.
Colors used in the video:
Mars Black
Process Black (alternative: ivory black)
Paynes Gray
Warm Gray
Titanium White (opaque)
Zink White (transparent)
The paper I use in the video is 140lb/200gram acid free sketchbook paper. But watercolor paper should work as well.
Transparent and Opaque Colors. How I glaze transparent acrylic colors on top of a black and white painting: • How To GLAZE With Acry...

Thank you for this video. I have been feeling quite overwhelmed with all the colour choices and decisions. This will get me back to basics and learning value and contrast 😊

Hi Marie Louise. I've watched many of your videos over the past few years. And I realize that the reason I'm re-watching them is not just because of the artistic content. It's because of who you are as an artist and a human. Your videos are an authentic expression of someone who is a teacher but also a learner. Personally, I find I can quickly get lost in different methods and approaches to creating, which is super fun but also confusing. I can be sure that in your videos I will find a quiet humble approach to expression and honest artistic exploration. I love it that your motivation comes from the beauty that you see around you. Keep doing what you love to do. And keep sharing the joy of creatiing. Life is beautiful but it can also be very hard. Thank you so much for sharing what you learn, and for encouraging us to take heart, to not be afraid, and to understand that all is well. With much thankfulness and respect , Jennifer James-McGinn (Canada).

Thanks so much for the ongoing wonderfully thoughtful videos. You're a gentle teacher and a wise painter. I am self taught and am learning more from you than any of the other painters on RU-vid. Thank you so very much for your ONGOING generosity!

This was terrific - in word and deed! The primacy of process is a key element to removing fear - it gives us 'freedom within a framework' - but one has to work at reassuring our neurons and learned behaviours that this is creating new ways of seeing and responding. Thank you very much.

Hi Marie Louise. Your B/W paintings really remind me of when I was a photographer specialising in B/W and how much it gave me. I will now try it with paints. Thank you your inspirational videos.

As always, thank you for the inspiration. I recently had the desire to do a group of black-and-white with a hit of 1 color like paynes gray or the siennas… I have also started using my acrylics on paper with interesting results. thank you!😊

Beautiful as always! I'm always blown away at the feeling you can create with just black and white. And I honestly didn't know about zinc white or at least that it was translucent!! I am new to this as you know and wondered why all the different names for white, just thinking some were more white then others, but didn't know they could also be translucent! That would so useful! Always learning!! Thanks so much!!!

Oh I so agree with you about how painting can be a challenge and it doesn’t always work out the way you imagined it would. Struggling with a painting can bring on new discoveries and techniques you perhaps hadn’t thought of. Personally I would find it quite boring and lose interest if it all came together perfectly every time I painted. And yes, adding layers is a great way to make your work more interesting. Thanks again for another great video!
@TheDanishPainter

I totally agree, if every painting worked out it wouldn't be the same. And although I really don't enjoy the struggle I now I need it and the result is so much sweeter. Thanks for your support Ed, I appreciate it!

I love your work. Here’s my question. I do I stop painting “a picture” rather than a feeling. I can paint loosely and expressively for a while but then I start fiddling with details and get little and tight. How do I leave it….. I know the answer is probably to just stop but I find it difficult to do.

You are very talented and inspire me greatly as an artist. When you aren’t speeding it up, about how long does it take you to do a painting you are satisfied with?

Wow! One of my favourites. I just love this black and white tonalism. And I love the way it looks in your sketch book when you take the tape away and it’s finished. Can you tell me how you sign your paintings please Marie Louise?
@TheDanishPainter
@TheDanishPainter 2 года назад
I'll usually sign both on the front and the back. Paintings on paper might be in pencil or permanent ink, it depends on the colors and my mood ;-) I used to sign my whole name. Then it was just my initials on the front. Now it's my last name on the front and my full name on the back.

Thank you for sharing this. I am wondering if you have additional videos of paintings in black and white. I watched your glazing method and glazing is something that is difficult for me, so I appreciate your video on glazing as well.-K

@TheDanishPainter 3 года назад
Glad it was helpful to you. At the moment I only have 2 videos on black and white painting. This one and then a video where I paint the black and white painting I later use in the glazing video Perhaps you already saw that one but if not here's the link it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HNJal59U1TU.html

Beautiful work! Do the water soluble crayons and pencils stay on the paper(do not disolve) when you paint glazes over them, or when you varnish the painting after you finish painting? Does this work on canvas also? Any specific crayons or pencils recommended?

Your videos are very inspiring , thank you. What masking tape and which paper are you using???
@TheDanishPainter
@TheDanishPainter 3 года назад
Thank you Dennis, that’s very kind of you. The masking tape is from the paint store where they sell house paint etc. It’s called Suncore Pro by Shuller Ehklar and I believe it’s a German brand. It’s a bit expensive but I reuse it several times - that why you’ll see the tape has lots of paint on it in my videos. The paper is 140lb/200 gram acid free sketchbook paper but watercolour paper would also work fine.
@romanaz100

Beautiful work. I want to ask if we should use water color paper for this type of work or paper made especially for acrylic paints? and one more thing is that I have water soluble pencils of Faber Castle. Do you think I should buy crayons too if I follow your tutorial? thanks
@TheDanishPainter
@TheDanishPainter 2 года назад
Yes you can, both types of paper should work fine - just use what you already have on hand. Your Faber Castle watercolor pencils should also work fine, no need to buy any new materials (unless you want to of cause) Hope that helps and happy painting :)
