There are cheaper clamshell style bags like Hynes Eagle, but it's not going to have this level of quality.

If you don't mind slightly smaller, the Patagonis MLC mini is fantastic and I love it. If you're an REI member you can get it during their sales throughout the year doe $160 or less

Looks like it has the option for compression straps on the sides? If so why are the straps to compress not included??
