@@PegLayne Booooooo. Perhaps they're restocking. As a small company, I have noticed that they regularly sell out styles and need to restock. Keep checking!
I carry a plastic grocery bag so I don't have to put trash in the seatback pocket. Gum wrappers, used tissues, used wipes, etc. all goes in the bag during the flight. I allow my seat mates to put their trash in it as well. When the flight attendant comes around to collect trash, it is bagged and ready to go. No more forgotten trash for the next passenger to deal with.
You'd almost think that airlines would start putting liners in those pockets to make it easier for the cleanup crew to clean up and more hygienic and convenient for the next passenger. It might cost a little more but the cost savings and extra bit of class it represents should more than pay off in the long run. They provide toilet seat covers so why not pocket liners?
I’ve actually pulled out a “sick bag” only to find that someone folded their chewed up gum on the outside of it 🤢. Not in the bag but outside of it and folded.
Travel pillow… I removed the stuffing, added Velcro, and that’s where I carry my bathing suit, cover up, and change of clothes (fresh shirt at least for colder destinations) in case luggage doesn’t show up right away (or at all). Especially handy when flying on vacation.
Instead of a travel blanket, I like using a big cashmere-blend scarf. Nice and warm on the plane, and then it's an accessory on the trip, including an extra layer of warmth when needed. I was really glad to have it last month in London!
Same, I carry a scarf, and also a sarong. The sarong is super light and can be used as a blanket, worn as an extra layer. A picnic rug or a beach towel.
I have a lightweight cashmere scarf for spring, summer and fall, and a heavier one for or winter. On my last international flight, they didn't have any blankets available for some reason, so it came in very handy.
During Covid I bought two multi pocket gardening vests to replace a purse for long walks and they’ve been wonderful for flying. I fill them with what I need accessible on the flight so don’t have to dig through the personal bag much. I wear the vests under blazers and roomy sweaters when at my destination. So I only bring a little dressy purse for nice evenings out. Otherwise I’m purseless . It’s great freedom and more hidden/secure.
@@mihaelahuban5287 Glad it might be useful for you. There are fancier more expensive multipocketed travel vests which would look dressier for going out or for business meeting trips. My travel is personal so the latter doesn’t apply to me but might be an additional vest option for business attire. Once I’m staying someplace, I don’t need all the travel items so manage with a small wallet in an obscure clothing pocket or small little purse for nice dinners or theater. I use the aforementioned gardening vests for full day escapades and hikes.
Scottevest makes clothing with lots of pockets. I use the same technique of wearing a vest in lieu of carrying a handbag. They also make jackets, pants and other things as well as vests. The vests have hidden pockets sewn into the inside of the vest to thwart pickpockets. Just take it off and throw it onto the conveyor belt when going through security. Well worth it.
I do too. Use them everywhere as it leaves my hands free (unless I am carrying my camera) Duluth vests are great, my husband wears a Scottevest which has that protective shield, and lots of pockets. Both vests have zippered inside pockets where we keep passports. We only take the vests off at airport security where their xray machines can read easilly and in our room. A scarf helps my vest look a bit better, but I accept that I am not a fashion queen... I am NOT quite as vulnlerable
Excellent video! A couple of thoughts though from a former biology teacher… If the seat pocket is “germy,” then we’ll pick up germs all over a fabric (porous) “protector” that we’ll then put into our bag. 😳Same for slippers on the nasty floor of the plane. I always cringe when I see people heading to the bathroom in their socks. Some suggest disposable shoe covers (like surgeons wear) that can be discarded rather than sticking germy slippers back in your bag. BTW, Saw a study revealing germs on bottom of shoes and always pack my shoes inside disposable bags. (Fabric shoe bags help but they’re porous.) I save plastic bags that cover toilet paper or that clothes are shipped in or whatever looks like it could serve this purpose. Free is always good but more importantly, it’s a good way to get more mileage before it hits the landfill.
Brava. I use a simple plastic grocery bag to collect things during flight. Knot it up and discard in final trash pickup by crew. On footwear, no one wants to smell your feet or used shoes during the flight. Loosen the laces a bit, but otherwise--keep them on your feet.
I use disposable shower caps for shoe covers in my luggage! I don't take my shoes off during a flight because I might not get them on again because of swelling! Comfortable shoes are a must for travelling!
I wear two pairs of socks (the outside pair being old tube socks) and carry a plastic grocery bag when going through TSA. Once through TSA, I remove the tube socks and stuff them in the plastic bag then put it my pocket. No dirty floor residue in my shoes. I also bring a double clip plastic hanger. If anything needs washing or gets wet, I clip it on the hanger and hang it in the shower to drip dry.
IN my purse (which is a crossbody bag) I have all vital things attached on lanyards so I don't lose them - wallet, eyeglass case, phone, passport, keys. All the lanyards are clipped to the purse so I can remove any of them if I want to. I am thinking when packing a personal item bag I will do some of the same so I can feel confident about not losing things.
Same here, but my lanyards are metal jojos with carabiner hooks on both sides. They don't get entangled. For boarding and takeoff as well as prior to landing my phone with ID and Creditcard and some cash goes into a safety waistband . In case of an emergency you'd have to leave all the bags behind.
I use those id things that have a pull out string. Take fabric end of lanyard and safety pin to bottom of purse. Stays attached but you have the snap part attached to wallet or keys.
I always have a couple of Clorox wipes in a sandwich bag and a plastic bag large enough to go into the seat pocket. Then I can use the seat pocket by lining it with the plastic bag. When done, I take it out and make sure it is inside out (so ‘dirty’ side is inside) and ready to use again. Wipes for table, arm rests, seatbelt, headrest, recline button and touch screen. Then in the sandwich bag ready for garbage. Love your videos. Fellow Canadian here!
We could almost be twins! I do the exact same thing. I also wipe the window cover handle if in the window seat, the light switch and AC knob adjuster above me.
I like different colored pouches inside my bags. If the bag doesn’t have too many pockets it’s easier to find them. I can’t remember which pocket I put things in. 😂 When everything is black it disappears. The Baggallini bags have light colors inside making it easier to find things.
I go to the local thrift store and buy pouches/zippered bags with light-colored linings for so cheap and wash them on Delicate and hang up to dry. Each one is different and some are so pretty that I almost hate to use them!
I have a small zippered bag that I have for my in-flight necessities; earbuds, lip balm, eye drops, small lotion, meclizine, pen, etc. I looked for one that had some kind of ring where I could add a small carabiner clip. I can usually attach this clip somewhere on the seat back in front of me, often the arm of the tray table. This way my essentials are always in reach but not in the seat back pocket. Another must-have for me is a small collapsible cup with a lid. I have tremors so those little plastic cups that drinks are served in are not the best option for me!
I carry a slim wristlet bag just large enough to take phone, driving license, passport and a credit card. This stays on for the whole flight. Were I ever to be in a crash I could evacuate leaving hand-luggage and still have the basic essentials. If you've got a super-picky airline luggage limit then you can slide it into your personal item when boarding and take it out at the seat. The wristlet bag is also smart enough to double as an evening bag at my destination.
Excellent strategy Susan! I do the same with my small crossbody tech bag. (that I review here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-58b2gViAJFg.htmlsi=3f-eqZeFV_i_LzrT )
I use a Turkish towel. It’s a great blanket on the airplane. then I use it at the beach, the sand doesn’t stick to it. And of course I use it after my shower.
Tip for going through Security, I keep either a Largish Sephora bag, or a small cheap drawstring backpack bag for going through Security; I will throw everything in my pockets, Cell phone, wallet, etc. belt, Passport; into the bag before going through the metal detector at airport check points. The bag goes through the x-ray machine as one of the last items I have going through. This lets me go through the metal detector without any issues; and on the other end, all my personal items I keep on myself are in a bag I can grab and restore to their proper places after going through security. I'm not trying to empty out the plastic bin full of coins, keys, and whatnot at the end with my laptop out and backpack out. I can quickly grab my items as they come through the x-ray machine and move off to a less crowded and less bustling place to put on my watch, belt, wallet, etc... and be more relaxed that I have all my stuff.
I bought one of those neck pillow cases that you can stuff with clothes. It is hopeless as a neck pillow but perfect as lumbar support. I also take my neoprene water shoes in my personal item to change into on the plane. They are super lightweight and have waterproof soles but stretchy tops so they accommodate my swelling feet and allow me to use the bathroom on the plane without contacting any icky stuff. I toss them in a plastic bag at the end of the flight and wash them when I get to my accommodation.
I always carry a Sawyer Mini kit (mini filtration with a collapsible water container). There have been times where I arrive very late at night and all the stores are closed, the only water source was from a faucet…in a south American country.
I organize my personal item with bags inside for various items, as you suggest. However, I make sure that all the bags are different, rather than all one color as yours are. I know that the blue bag is prescriptions and OTC meds, the red one is electronic chargers and accessories, etc. Much easier to find the bag I want if they don't all look the same.
Nora, love your tips. I'm going to try a kid's beach ball, semi-inflated, as a foot rest on my upcoming flight Melbourne to Amsterdam. I also pack large safety pins, the sort you use on old-fashioned nappies, to secure the top of a pocket. I got a seamstress to make a new pocket inside my pants so I can store money, passport etc which can't be pickpocketed.
Thanks for the tip about the EarPlanes. The pain and muffled hearing, usually from descent, is real for me when I fly on smaller aircraft such as A329/320/321s or B727/737s. I paused your video just so I could go order a pair for my upcoming trip. Now here's a tip I'll share: you can fit 4-6 antibacterial wipes into an amber plastic Rx bottle. I've been using them for many years to pack what we need for entire trips -- at a fraction of the price we'd pay for those "travel sized packs" that never really re-seal well. I pack one bottle for the outbound flight, one for each hotel room/cruise cabin, and another for the return flight. The wipes stay perfectly moist (sorry, but the word fits), but don't leak.
That is a great idea! I can get a bottles free from CVS if I ask them for one. (I just tell them I need them for my meds and they are happy to give me one.) I use makeup remover cloths and douse them in pure alcohol. They are larger and clean much better. I usually put them in plastic zip locks, but your Idea is way better!!!
For trips I wear an oversized wide but thin scarf. This becomes my blanket because I can open it up and it covers my torso. This scarf is a sarong actually and folds super thin when I arrive at my destination. No one ever questions this accessory.
Some airlines include the weight of your personal bag as part of your carry on luggage. So if you are thinking you can cram heaps of things in your personal bag to keep the carry on within the weight, check with the airline before you leave. I have seen people been made to go ask and che k in the carry on.
Hi Nora. Just a quick note that I purchased the tray table seatback organizer. I've traveled 3 times with it now and love it. It takes no space in my bag and is so easy to use. I love having all my stuff set up for long haul flights. At the end, it just pulls off and stuffs back into my back without fuss. I have the one you linked. Keep the great tips coming!
My problem on most flights is being too warm. In addition to the overhead 'ventilation', I carry a folding fan wherever I go. Any extra layer can be rolled up and put in the small of your back for lumbar support. A smallish (larger than a lunch bag) brown paper bag with handles can carry your snacks, lunch/dinner and beverages aboard without being counted as luggage. Big win!
I bought a pair of slippers that are collapsible. Similar to ballet flats. They fold up super small into a zipper pouch I now always travel with them. I use on the flight as well as in hotel rooms/cruise cabin. Even better when I get home they just go right in the washer.
Love your content Nora! And I am actually grateful for all your suggestions and ideas. I have one for you and the community. I put the things I am going to use in the plane (AirPods, book, journal, pen, wipes, tissue, and the like) inside a medium size silicone bag and I place it where the things for us to read are placed (after a very good inspection before placing it there). Also, it is a good idea to bring a Starbucks bag (small and folded) and once at placed all the food and snacks I will eat in the plane), this way, it is not count as “another” personal item 😉 (these two were suggestions by somebody. They are not my own)
A variety of Ziplock bags come in handy for a multitude of reasons. I do the exact same thing with carry on bag and personal item bag, keeping things I will need at my seat (liquids, tissues, headphones, etc) in the personal item bag. One tip I learned the hard way: if all of your little pouches are black or dark colored, you will have a hard time finding what you need, especially on a long haul when they turn the lights out. I put bright, colorful stickers on power banks, hard cover electronics cases, etc so I can see them more easily in the bottom of my bags.
Oh my....I needed this content 11 years ago! I am a notorious over-packer (aka semi-high maintenance haha!) and traveled a decent amount for work until 2020. Then they realized how "efficient" we could be just staying at home and doing Zoom calls. Although I honed my packing skills over those years, I still struggle every year when we go on vacation. This is awesome info, and I can't wait to check out all the links you provide! As an aside, the wall behind you is absolutely stunning. I don't think I've ever seen anything so pretty done with stone. Thank you for all the amazing hints and tricks!
Tip: you can buy strings which attach to your EarPod tips, so that they sit across the back of your neck. Mine have little magnets at each end which clip my EarPods together to wear like a necklace around my neck, when not fitted into my ears. This stops them popping out of your ears and falling down the loo etc. They’re very cheap to buy. Also I use card luggage labels (attached with string), to all my inner packing bags, so I can find things quicker at my destination. Hope this helps
I use a wool pashmina as a travel blanket. They fold up super small, are very warm, and can dress up an outfit. They can even be machine washed as long as you do cold water on the delicate cycle, however, do not put it in the dryer. Hang it over the shower curtain rod and it will be dry in half and hour or so.
I have that tray table cover with pockets. Got them for hubby and me for a flight to Europe and they are very thin and so wonderful! The other benefit besides cleanliness is that you aren't likely to forget something in the plane's pocket. I throw them in the wash when we get home or wash them out by hand in the hotel after the trip. Instead of a blanket, I use a light shawl or poncho that can act as a blanket on the plane or keep me warm while out and about.
Wow! Great travel hacks. I am blown away thinking I am the only person dealing with ear pain on flights descending. I happen to carry around the very same ear plugs you displayed but I never used. I will now try them. A hack to pass on to you and your viewers: whenever you stay in a hotel or resort that provides slippers, shaving, and dental kits, just keep them and take with you on long haul flights. They save room and disposable after use. Long haul economy flights don’t provide slippers but you can take the ones provided at hotels.
Instead of a travel blanket, I carry an oversized, but thin, merino wool wrap. I can use it as a blanket on the flight and as a wrap at my destination. I tend to visit cathedrals a lot and in hot destinations the tank tops/camisole type tops I wear are too bare for a church, so I pull out my wrap and I’m good to go. When it is cool at night, the wrap also works for evening events.
I use a back pack for my personal item, and I’ve learned to look for ones with light colour inside. Trying to find something inside is much easier vs a black interior.
Also a must have is AIR TAGS. We use Apple, but I believe there are now android versions available. Absolutely a stress relief to know where your luggage is and in case you leave your bag behind (yep, did that 🤦🏻♀️) you can quickly locate it!
After a bad experience landing, which resulted in ear pain and vertigo, a doctor recommended that I take a decongestant or antihistamine during the flight along with using the Ear Planes. This keeps your sinuses clear and helps with maintaining the pressure in your ears. I've used this method since then on dozens of flights, both long and short, and never had had a problem since. FYI- They have Ear Planes sized for children or those with small ear canals.
Me, a guy, I'm old school. I travel with a light rain jacket (with multiple pockets, more on that in a sec). I also have my laptop bag (personal item) with my noise-cancelling headphones. My carry-on is the max size allowed, and carry the usual. The old school thing (fashion sense) is my fanny bag. I carry what's absolute essential there, including passports, wallets (one per country), keys, hard drives, glasses, phones, etc. My reasoning is if there's an emergency and we need to leave things behind, the fanny bag never leaves me. The personal item bag might need to be left behind. When I go thru security, I empty my pockets into the jacket zippered pockets, so hopefully I'm metal free when I reach the trays. One thing I'd recommend to look into it, if possible, for the personal item bag is to be able to hook onto the wheeled carry-on but at the bottom "rear", so when it's being pulled across the airport (this is if the carry-on is a two-wheeler), the weight of it is on the other side of the wheel axis and counters the weight of the carry on inclined forward. Just like the airline crew does it. Your wrists will thank you.
I have the AirPocket that fits over the tray table, and love it. I put stuff in it beforehand, and fold it over itself, making its own “pouch”. I was told that it can’t be on the tray table during take-off and landing, so I keep it by my side during take-off, then just slip it over the tray table. Almost everything I need during the flight is right there (book, AirPods, snacks, sanitizing wipes, etc.)
My husband and I have AirPockets as well. Im surprised you had to wait until after take off to put it on. We just got back from a trip with 5 different flights. We put our AirPockets on right after we boarded and not one flight attendant said anything. Well if it happens to us I guess i won’t be surprised! Last month we were on a different trip and several flight attendants noticed and loved our AirPockets and even took pictures so they could order one.
@@katiebellejohnson2688 I'm curious about the air pockets. When you have lots of stuff in your pockets, can you still fold up the tray table without things falling out or being in the way when getting up from the seat to go to the bathroom or other people getting up in your row to get out?
@@midlifemissionacademy8383 The pockets are unstructured but they are deep. We’ve had no issues with anything falling out. If we need to get up, we just fold up the table as usual and slide out. The pockets are down low alongside the seat back - so out of the way. We’re not terribly tall people - 5’5” and 5’8”- but have never had an issue. I hope this helps!
I miss Pan Am! I was a PA Flight Attendant and third generation; Grandfather- Chief mechanic, Father - Pilot, Mother - Stewardess. I still work as a Flight Attendant. Pan Am was the best. Those were the days when traveling was fun and exciting.
My travel blanket is an old 100% silk sleeping bag liner, unpicked/seam ripped so it's a large rectangle. Warm, weighs nothing, squishes into its own tiny pouch. Very handy in hotels too as aircon can be freezing.
Great way to reuse an old one. I carry an intact silk liner to use in hostels, or places where I'm not sure of the bedding, or where the available bedding doesn't give me the flexibility I need with the room temperature (which is my issue with duvets in warmer weather). The liner works well as a travel blanket, too (though not as easy to keep wrapped around as an unpicked one would be).
I recently bought a neck pillow that you can fill with clothes. Since you can attach it to the outside of your carry-on/personal item, it doesn’t count toward in-cabin bag limits. It holds quite a bit of stuff, but is never in danger of being gate-checked.
I love your videos and have recently shared them with my sister. On another site I heard that a large ziplock bag can be used in the seat pockets to put anything you need access to this way it stays clean. I always wipe everything down with a Clorox wipe and maybe having a small plastic bag to put garbage in would be a good suggestion. Keep the videos coming. ❤ I forgot to mention that I also take a wrap/coverup that I use on the plane and also use at my destination to wear and change up my look.
I have one of the tray table covers. I love it. I actually pack it with what I think I might need during the flight and just pull it my personal bag when I sit down on the plane.
Hello Nora, I watched this video some months ago and I’m checking back in to tell you how benefical your tip has been about these ear buds. I ordered a set of these buds to try on a domestic flight I had this summer and I really enjoyed my flight. No pressure sensation, no ear pain, no plugged ears and sinus and ear infections following the flights. Thank You so much. I have been spreading the news of these little buds ever since.
A couple of years ago on a trans-Atlantic flight, I got food poisoning. There wasn't a "sickness bag" in the seatback pouch, and I almost didn't make it to the bathroom in time. Now I always bring an "emesis bag" of my own; bought the YGDZ brand from Amazon but there are a lot of other options too. Hopefully this is like carrying an umbrella so that it won't rain. 😉
Love your videos. Thanks for them. One thing I've found very useful travelling carry-on only is a stuffable neck pillow which I stuff with my feather down Uniqlo coat - perfect and comfortable and it isn't counted as luggage. Take my coat out at destination and pop the empty pillow in my case till my next flight.
Very clever! Be warned though: some airlines are cracking down on neck pillows and such. I speak more about it in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yLDz-ttaf20.htmlsi=vzOuHoipFth-e-Aj
One tip: avoid using black or very dark pouches in your personal bag (or, infact in any of your luggage) it’s so hard to locate items in the ‘sea,of black’ - consider colour coding your pouches …
Great tips, Nora, thanks! I especially like the reminder to keep certain valuables at the bottom of your bag, or in separate zipped pockets. It's so easy to lose track of things when you're tired or in a hurry.
I have a slim cross-body bag that I wear throughout my flight keeping all valuables and necessities for the flight. read too much news about flight thefts to leave anything behind for my toilet trips hahaha. The smallest ones usually don't count as personal items, at least I have not had any problems with it. Oh and I wipe down all surfaces with wet wipes and always wear long sleeves and trousers for flights too :))))
Used one of the tray covers on my recent trip from Phoenix to Charlotte …. It was perfect. It fit my phone, ear pods when not in use, kindle, and my tablet. So glad I got one.
One thing that is very important for me is to dress my luggage in order to protect and quickly identify it . Specially when i have short time within flights On a trip to Italy I bought a flaming red lycra tube minidress with some huge graphics from an outlet cannister for half an Euro . It weights 50 grams( less than 2 ounces) and it is extremelly easy to wash. I just sewed a velcro strip on the center lower part and it works fantastic as luggage sleeve !!!! My last sleeve weighted almost 350 grams (more than 12 ounces) so this was a huge improvement ... And NOBODY has the same design ;)
My personal bag has many outside pockets. Pockets for water bottles (on the ends), zipper pocket on the handle sleeve for passport and any other travel documents, outside pocket for my book and reading glasses, and roomy inside for all my toiletries, medications (don't forget a first aid kit!), jewelry bag, electronics, a change of clothes, and (if needed) my small crossbody purse. I don't travel for business anymore, retired now, but my personal bad and a checked bag is all I need for a cruise or other travel for a week or two!
We've been using Earplanes for almost 20 years. Lifesavers!!! I use the child size because I have small ears. My son HAD to use them, growing up due to terrible ear infections when he was little. Now he's a pilot and learned how to clear his ears, which I've never mastered. 🤷🏻♀️ Great tips! Glad I found your channel.
I bought an AirFly and it is great to use it with my AirPods. No longer tethered to any audio jack. Can also put the AirPods into noise cancelling mode. I also travel with a Pashmina, much smaller than a travel blanket an more versatile.
I have the ExOfficio 12 pocket vest for summer and the Scott E-vest for winter. I also use Stashbanz waist pockets 4 pockets plus a zippered pocket. I have traveled extensively. I never carry a purse. It is very liberating not to have to worry about getting your purse stolen or pick pocketed.
I have a flight pouch that contains hand wipes, travel clorox wipes, hand sanitizer, lip balm, ear buds in a case, eye drops, cough drops, gum, mints, and travel hand lotion. I put my tablet in the outer pocket of my personal item so when I get on the plane, I can easily access it. After security, of course. I pack a fanny pack with all my purse items, wallet, keys, phone, charger. I do not want to be fishing for things during a flight. I also take a grocery store plastic bag to protect my items I am using during the flight when putting it in the seat pocket. When the flight crew come around the last time for you to throw away any trash, I throw that bag away.
I have a fanny pack just for flying (because I don't like how they look on people). But this one is super handy - I sewed little pockets into the inside to organize all the little stuff. I used a yellow tulle-like mesh that is uber light weight. It comes on rolls about 4" tall at Walmart, etc. I found a light weight, tough nylon ribbon to reinforce/line the tops of each pocket. Lots of stuff fits in there and I can see everything at a glance. I hand-sewed them while watching TV in the evenings and it took less than a week.
I have the tray table hanging little hammock. More comfortable for my feet to rest on than the floor as not too tall. Great on long flights, light and rolls up quite small.
I drink multiple bottles worth of water everyday even in cold weather so Im bringing 3 empty water bottles for my upcoming 14 hr long haul, only one leg of my journey 😂. I cant survive without A LOT of water. I started watching you Nora when I was prepping for this big trip last year in August, and a big life change and now I can say I definitely am on my way soon! In two months though. Thanks for all your tips , your channel has really helped me feel more prepared, confident and at ease especially since Im moving back solo to the good ol USA to start my career! ❤ Youre like the big sister we all need 😁. Great stuff!
Can't wait to see what you come up with for the over seat organizer! I feel like I tried one made for cars, a long time ago. Wasn't too bad but obvi, it didn't quite work right with the tray table, etc. In-flight pouch is a must! I usually use a fanny pack type bag that stays ON me.....then I use S hooks or a carabiner to hang a grocery back or something, off the seat pocket. Then my water bottle or any larger items just go in there. On my last long haul trip home, I even managed to leave the space under the seat in front of me free for my feet! Thanks for all the awesome tips...always!
Great tips! I have a very small but powerful clip-on flashlight on my purse that goes with me everywhere. Useful for looking into dark bags or in an emergency. Fresh batteries go in before a big trip. Also, shampoo, soap and conditioners are now available as solid bars. No need for the liquid kind or the plastic bottles. Many brands have convenient travel/sample sizes that are very efficient.
Good call on the clip-on flashlight! I have a small one on. my keychain that is USB rechargeable, but to tell the truth I often forget I have it! Also, I adore solid shampoo & conditioner (and other solid toiletries); I've used them for years.
I purchased a very small backpack (just barely big enough for my IPad). It goes in the top of my “personal item” backpack. After security, I move all of the things I want for the flight: iPad, phone earbuds, chargers, sanitizer etc into this bag, along with my wallet/passport. Boarding the plane, it’s on top of the under seat bag. After takeoff all I have to do is slip it out of the personal bag and use the straps to hang it on the tray table.
While I still love travelling...it is getting way to tricky to make your trip a happy memory. Praying my next vacations go well. Thank you for sharing your hacks. !
I love finding something new to try, Nora; thank you! I like to pack Fitkicks in my carry-on because they can act as both slippers and shoes. For in-flight comfort, I pack a small assortment of either sippable broths, teas, or electrolyte/immunity flavor packets.
I have a pair of foldable leather slippers that I bought over 20 years ago when travelling a lot for business and still have them for long trips nowaday. They fold in a pouch slightly bigger than my palm , can be cleaned (wash carefully). This is the best thing I would recommend, other than a pair of noise cancelling headphone and a light polar blanket with a zipper than I can use as a sleeping bag in the plane.
I carry a wide mouth thermos rather than a water bottle. You can use it for cold water, coffee or even mixing up instant soup or instant oatmeal. The flight attendants will be able to give you hot water.
A drinking straw inside the thermos might help for coffee etc .. the long plastic ones are flexible enough to squish in to close the thermos, and spring up to use @@squirrelnibbler19
The merino cardigan is great idea. I always take one on flights as I can wear it onto the plane, it rolls up easily, takes up a small space and I can drape it over myself like a blanket and it is super comfortable.
I wear cargo pants on flights because that way l can ensure everything l absolutely want to secure is with me even if there’s an emergency (incl my medicine). I rarely need anything from my personal item bag as everything fits in the pockets
@passioncompassion....Oh good. But what happens when you have to go through screener? Airports security check makes you empty out all your pockets and keep your electricals and liquids visible?
@@ashrafnoorwala8470 I keep an ultra light shopping tote with me always, and empty my pockets into that while standing in the line. Then just put things back after the security check.
Great content Nora! You are much more organized than I am (1M+ miles, 26 countries). One thing that I have to take out of my bag at airport pre-screening is my small collapsable umbrella (the folded wires trigger the x-ray unless you put in directly in the bin). I also pack a very lightweight, waterproof windbreaker and use it in my bag to cushion my electronic/photo gear (double-duty item!), And on the flight, I bring a small multi-USB outlet wall charger with a cord to plug into the plane power outlet- you will make friends by offering seat mates easy access to it by the tray tables. Thank you!
I’ve got one of those Bluetooth headphone adaptors. Plus the airport dual 3.5mm plug. It works really well but remember to keep it charged AND - as you’re not using it every day - remember how it works!
Rather than a blanket, I bring an extra large shawl which I can use for warmth in the evening at my destination, a wrap for modesty etc. It makes a great blanket on the plane.
Hello, I am new to your channel. I’m so glad I found you. Your tips have just saved me a lot of money 😊. I have a suggestion regarding the water bottle. There are those who have a built in kataden (spelling?) filter in the cap. So you fill up the bottle with water and screw your cap on and then you can drink clean, filtered water. You can also use this to fill up other bottles on the go and you do not have to worry about getting sick. This is commonly used for camping. It’s collapsible and super lightweight. You have to check with the manufacturer about the filter. If you are going too tropical places you might need a different one. Happy travels
Great suggestion - thanks Alex! I'm personally a fan of Water-to-Go bottles that have filters. They're not collapsible though. water-to-go-usa.myshopify.com?sca_ref=4571826.niokjLykdW&sca_source=RU-vid
I use a hip pouch to carry my valuables and small toiletries that I may need on the flight. I don't have to unbuckle my seat belt to reach for my handbag that is under the seat in front of me.
Something I stumbled across one day was a foot hammock that hangs from the tray table arms. If you have shorter legs or just want to change the position of your feet with out trying to pretzel yourself into a knot these saved my lower back and legs on a 14-hour flight last year
I've heard of these! I wonder if there are combo items - the tray table cover/organizer that I showed in this video....WITH the foot hammock as well....
I have one and absolutely love it!! I don't think it's too bulky, but I only use it if flying over 5 hours. I also use it in the car for long road trips by hooking it around the glove box. Works perfectly!
absolutely a game changer for me! a window seat with small pillow and the foot hammock can make me feel like i’m at least a little horizontal when i sleep on long flights. and mine squishes down quite small. 12 bucks. a great investment!
I always bring a few thin plastic hangers, as I find there are never enough hangers in hotel rooms. Also an extension cord is useful in many hotel rooms.
On my last flight the tray table was covered in crumbs! Ick! Many of the crumbs were precariously sticking to the back of the seat in front too. Fortunately I had antibacterial wipes with me and I sorted it out as well as the rest of my area for my comfort. Keep up your great content! 😆
Awesome tips 😎 I keep my travel purse in my personal item bag filled with those things that I want handy (lip balm, hand sanitizer, lotion, etc.) those items stay in there throughout my trip also. Those collapsable water bottles that also have a carabiner are awesome if you don’t have a water bottle pocket.
Hi Nora you just appeared on my feed today and I instantly became a subscriber! Your info and delivery are top notch! Can’t wait to watch the rest of your videos!
I bought the over the tray table organizer because it seemed like a great idea. Unfortunately the next trip I took EVERY SINGLE flight (5 of them) had the folding tray tables and even though it MIGHT have still fit over that and worked for the pockets, every time I would have used the tray table I would have had to remove the organizer and put it somewhere! Plus that kind of makes the idea of keeping things sanitary on the tray table nil and void. I didn't even take it on the next trip after that as it actually DOES take up a lot of room and weight. Having said all that, I DO intend on taking it with me on my trip to Hawaii in April. I don't recall if Hawaiian Airlines has the folding tray tables but even if it does I'm going to give it a go. Maybe it WILL work! 😀
I totally hadn't considered that some seats have tray tables that fold into the armrest rather than down from the seat in front! That's just for bulkhead or emergency row seats though, no?
I fly British Airways predominantly, so I use a 12"X16"X5" personal item (PI), which has a crossbody strap, even my backpack one. To avoid using the dirty rear seat pocket in any compromising way, I put the PI under the seat but keep the crossbody strap pulled up and attached to the seat pocket by a hero clip. Easy Peasy to pull up the bag if/when I need access. No bending involved. No extraneous items outside the bag.
I travel with a raw silk kimono duster. The silk is textured, so it feels warmer than smooth silk does. It has long, loose sleeves, but not deep pockets sleeves like a real kimono. It is lined with soft cotton and has pockets, but no buttons or fasteners. It looks great over anything I’m wearing, and can be used for a robe, an extra layer of warmth on a flight or in a hotel , it’s a light jacket, and if rolled up it’s a neck pillow. It would be easy to sew oneself.
Similar to your pouch idea I have a small drawstring bag for myself and my husband for use during the flight. Already packed with books, headphones, glasses, pen, painkillers etc. once through security I just add any liquids/tech stuff required to them and then my ruck sack can go under seat in front and we each have everything we need for a comfortable flight. PS I also use earplanes for descent - a total game changer!
I have the seat pocket cover you showed. It is so stretchy that it loses its shape. I had thought weight would cause it to stretch down but actually it stretches out. Amazing in practice.... not great in execution. Got this one instead: Serenity Organizers AirplaneTravel Less give so it held its shape but still generous enough I was able to get my 32 oz water bottle inside and nothing fell out when I laid my tray table down.
Moving stuff between bags works for a single flight. From Australia I usually have to change in Singapore and go through security again before getting the next flight to my destination. It can be done but what a pain in the neck having to empty then refill water bottles, show your liquids etc etc. I know first world problems, so I suck it up and just do it because it is so worth it to travel.
Regarding germs on the tray table and seat back area, I bring a gallon ziplock bag that I push into the back pocket, and then my things ONLY go in and out of it. I wipe the tray table down with sanitizer or a Clorox wipe (always have a few in a sandwich baggie).
Although I can't/won't check everything (I travel with a fair bit of tech gear), I'm starting to come around on the idea that checking my main luggage is ultimately easier.
This video is definitely masterclass level. Greatest advice ever. Comments, questions: 1) Your ears hurt? Have you covered ear barotrauma (airplane ear) in any of your videos? I think it's great to have decongestant medication in carry-on for when your eustachian tubes close. I think decongestant medication can save your ears quickly if earplugs aren't enough and things go south. Ear pain and ruptured eardrums aren't worth it. 2) Nasal spray/mouthwash. A little bit of betadine .5% before, during, and after flights goes a long way toward killing any bug your nasal cavity could ck up.while flying. I think you covered that elsewhere, yes? 3) How do you like that Tortuga carry-on backpack? Have you reviewed it? 4) What's going on with the slate wall behind you? Camera jumps forward and backward. The wall design looks like some ancient symbol.
Hey David! 1) Haven't checked my ears, always just figured I have trouble with pressure. And yep, I used to use decongestant nasal spray before discovering earplanes, and I still do if I have a cold. 2) I haven't used nasal spray for this reason, but I've heard about it. Is betadine also a decongestant? 3) I haven't specifically reviewed the Tortuga laptop backpack, but I do like it. It's super durable, and has been great for use at my destination (going to coworking spaces etc). It's barely large enough for my personal bag needs, but I need to carry A LOT of tech so I need more space than most people. 4) The slate wall has a replica of an ancient church in the town center of the village where I'm staying in Bulgaria. Cool, huh?
@@NoraDunn Oh, wow... my worst fear during flying... Regarding 1 (ear barotrauma "airplane ear"), I'd say that it can be a huge nightmare, and I think a lot of people get bad cases of this during flights If your ears hurt during flights, you might have dodged a bullet here so far. I've had a couple friends who ripped their eardrums during flights, and it almost happened to me many years ago, until a person on my flight gave me an antihistamine (Benadryl, I think). It's incredibly painful, and if the eardrums rip, it takes a long time to heal. Not recommended!!!! In a crisis earplugs help but they only get you so far. So I never get on a flight (or for that matter a hot air balloon or glider) without having medication handy for when it becomes an issue. You might think that flight attendants would make this available, but this isn't always the case. Here's a good article on the topic. The medication is an easy fix and it works because it opens up or clears out the eustachian tubes which are used to equalize pressure between your outer and middle ear. Earplanes can't do that, so I think it's worth it to have the cheap but effective nuclear option (medication) handy at all times. In hindsight, a nasal decongestant spray like what you used to carry seems like the gold standard here for adults. www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/airplane-ear/symptoms-causes/syc-20351701
@@NoraDunn oh, wow #2. My other worst fear during flying is inhaling some airborne pathogen and getting sick. It seems to me that the most effective thing one can do (more effective than masks, which have highly limited efficacy) is to use some sort of nasal disinfectant (not to be confused with decongestant) that reaches the nasal cavity where all sorts of things (like coronaviruses) live. There's years of studies (including with COVID) indicating that povidone-iodine (PVD-I, brands like Betadine) can prevent illness and also knock down the viral load if used as a nasal spray and/or mouthwash.. So I always carry Betadine (diluted to well under .5% solution) as a nasal/oral spray, and I use it throughout the flight. Maybe it's a bit strange to do that, but nasal sprays seem like the best defense against catching something while flying. I use the spray and don't worry about who is sniffling in a nearby seat.
Great content, as always, Nora! Got my collapsible water bottle & headed to Croatia at the end of March. This is just my 3rd time leaving the states & I’m already getting anxious about the trip. I pray the destination is worth it! 😬
I understand your anxiousness! Believe it or not, before a big trip I STILL get nervous! It's all good. Enjoy your new water bottle! I hope you love it as much as I do :-)
